Roman Chichester Priory Park Archaeology Project 2017
This is a video I recorded some time ago in Priory Park in Chichester when the local authority were doing an archaeological dig in priory park of Roman ruins. This was the talk given before they covered it all over again. If you haven't visited, it is well worth visiting Chichester and the surrounding areas, there is Fishbourne Roman Palace down the road, in Chichester Cathedral (free entry) is a glass floor area where you can look down on old ruins. There are many notices up around the City about different ruins etc in different places. Inside Chichester Museum (free entry) there are excavated ruins you can see as well as plenty to look at while you are in there and around Chichester are mounds etc where something once was or happens to be covered over (like the mound where an old Roman Amphitheatre once stood).

It's a bit unusual to find complete Roman buildings in a place that has been occupied as long as the city of Chichester. But that's exactly what happened. Archaeologists have been able to confirm the existence of houses underneath Priory Park. It's believed they belonged to wealthy people of the era. Our reporter Nicole Ris has the details.

Priory Park 100 Trailer
Priory Park, Chichester’s own ‘village green’, lies within the walls in the northeast quadrant of the city. England’s history for over 2000 years is represented within park, from the Romans to the present day where it still is a focal point for the community activities. On the 30th September 1918, the 7th Duke of Richmond & Gordon presented the Park to the citizens of Chichester as a 'perpetual memorial of the Great War and for the purposes of public recreation'. Priory Park 100 is a collaboration between the Friends of Priory Park and the Priory Park Festival to highlight the Park's contribution to the quality of life in Chichester, honour its history, and reaffirm its role as a memorial to the fallen in the First World War. The week-long celebrations of Priory Park 100 takes place between 22nd & 30th September 2018 and will consist of a fantastic programme of events designed to engage all age groups across the community.

Chichester is a cathedral city in West Sussex, in South-East England. Chichester is the only city in West Sussex and is its county town. Chichester has a long history as a settlement from Roman times and was important in Anglo-Saxon times.
Chichester is the seat of a bishopric, with a 12th-century cathedral, and is home to some of the oldest churches and buildings in Great Britain. Chichester has three tiers of local government. Chichester is a transport hub, and a centre for culture in the county, with a theatre, museum and art galleries. Chichester Harbour and the South Downs provide opportunities for outdoor pursuits.
The City of Chichester is located on the River Lavant south of its gap through the South Downs. This winterbourne for part of its course now runs through the city in underground culverts. Chichester has an Oceanic climate. With its position in southern England, Chichester has mild winters and cool summers. It has high sunshine levels compared to other parts of the UK with around 1900 hours annually.
Chichester is the hub of several main roads. The most important of these is the A27 coastal trunk road (connecting Eastbourne with Southampton) which passes to the south of the city. Chichester railway station, on the West Coastway Line, has regular services to Brighton, London Victoria via Gatwick Airport, Portsmouth and Southampton. There are also many bus services, with Chichester bus station, adjacent to the railway station, acting as a local hub. Chichester Airport is north of the city.
