Ripon Prison and Police Museum
Here is The Prison and Police Museum, Situated in Ripon, North Yorkshire on St Marygate.
The museum is housed in a building which formed part of the former House of Correction and Liberty Gaol.
The buildings origins go back to the late 17th Century, but the part now occupied by the museum was built as Ripon Liberty Prison in 1816 and continued as such until May 1878 when it was closed as part of the government reform of prisons along with numerous others.
The building was empty until1887 when it then became the Ripon Police Station after the Ripon Force moved from their old Station and Lock Up on Kirkgate following the amalgamation of the Ripon City Police Force into The West Riding Constabulary.
The West Riding Constabulary occupied the building until moving to their present Police Station in North Street.
Upon entering the front yard you can see items such as a pillory, stocks, whipping post and a Police Box, similar to the Dr Who Tardis.
Inside the museum there are numerous items of Police memorabelia, displays of Policing through the ages, with many of the displays being inside the actual old cells.
There are also lots of examples of old Police radios and communications equipment and old Police badges and insignia.

Essex Police Museum - Past and Present
The Essex Police Museum, at Essex Police Headquarters in Chelmsford is a treasure chest of historical objects and information, dating back to 1840, all providing clues as to how the police service has developed to be the organisation it is today.
The Museum preserves the history of Essex Police giving visitors, both young and old, the opportunity to get involved in educational and craft activities covering a variety of subject areas including the Victorians and World War II.
Visitors can also view a range of historical materials including personnel, disciplinary and other records together with more general documents and a large photographic collection.
The museum has now become well known as an outstanding educational resource for school children and community groups including Scouts and Guides associations.
In the last five years visitor numbers to the museum have doubled but sadly, due to the current economic climate and pressure on the force budget to find savings of up to £43 million by 2014, the police museum is at threat of closure.
Working with the community on a daily basis Essex Police would like to give local organisations the opportunity to become a partner with the force by sponsoring the Museum. Working together we can help to ensure it stays open to the public, preserves the history of Essex Police officers and staff and continues to inspire even greater achievements from future generations.
The opportunities for organisations to directly support the Essex Police Museum take many forms, for example, you may like to sponsor a particular display within the museum or contribute to educational activities that run throughout school holidays.
For more information on the Essex Police Museum or sponsorship opportunities visit or call the Museum - telephone 01245 452395

Ripon is a cathedral city in the Borough of Harrogate, North Yorkshire, England. Historically part of the West Riding of Yorkshire, Ripon is located at the confluence of two tributaries of the River Ure, the Laver and Skell.
Ripon is noted for its main feature, Ripon Cathedral which is architecturally significant, as well as the Ripon Racecourse and other features such as its market. The city itself is just over 1,300 years old. Ripon was originally known as Inhrypum and was founded by Saint Wilfrid during the time of the Anglian kingdom of Northumbria, a period during which it enjoyed prominence in terms of religious importance in Great Britain.
Ripon was for a period under Viking control, and later suffered under the Normans. After a brief period of building projects under the Plantagenets, the city of Ripon emerged with a prominent wool and cloth industry. Ripon became well known for its production of spurs during the 16th and 17th centuries, but would later remain largely unaffected by the Industrial Revolution.
Ripon is located 11 miles (18 km) south-west of Thirsk, 16 miles (26 km) south of Northallerton and 12 miles (19 km) north of Harrogate. As well as its racecourse and cathedral, Ripon is a tourist destination because of its close proximity to the UNESCO World Heritage Site which consists of the Studley Royal Park and Fountains Abbey.
The tradition of the Ripon Hornblower has endured since the year 886 and continues on to this day. It originates with the wakeman of Ripon, whose job in the Middle Ages was similar of that to a mayor although he had more responsibilities in the keeping of law and order. Every day at 9:00pm the horn is blown at the four corners of the obelisk in Ripon Market. The horn has become the symbol of the city and represents Ripon on the Harrogate borough coat of arms. There are three museums in Ripon collectively known as the Yorkshire Law and Order Museums; it includes the Courthouse, the Prison and Police and the Workhouse Museums.
In terms of sport, the most noted field of participation is horse racing with the Ripon Racecourse. The sport has a long history in Ripon, with the first recorded meeting on Bondgate Green in 1664, while its current location has been used as a racetrack since 1900. Ripon staged Britain's first race for female riders in 1723.
The city was previously served by Ripon railway station on the Leeds-Northallerton Line that ran between Leeds and Northallerton. By road Ripon is well connected; it is accessible from the north and south via the A1(M) motorway which connects to Ripon by the B6265. The Ripon Canal was proposed by John Smeaton in 1766, to connect the city centre to part of the River Ure.
( Ripon - UK ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting the city of Ripon . Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in Ripon - UK
