The Palace of Fontainebleau located southeast of the centre of Paris, in the commune of Fontainebleau, is one of the largest French royal châteaux.
The medieval castle and subsequent palace served as a residence for the French monarchs from Louis VII to Napoleon III.
The earliest record of a fortified castle at Fontainebleau dates to 1137.
It became a favorite residence and hunting lodge of the Kings of France because of the abundant game and many springs in the surrounding forest.
It took its name from one of the springs, the fountain de Bliaud, located now in the English garden, next to the wing of Louis XV.
It was used by King Louis VII, for whom Thomas Becket consecrated the chapel in 1169;
by Philip Augustus; by Louis IX, or Saint Louis, who built a hospital and a convent, the Couvent des Trinitaires, next to the castle;
and by Philippe le Bel, who was born and died in the castle.
It is now a national museum and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
From the time of Francis I, the palace was surrounded by formal gardens, representing the major landscaping styles of their periods;
the French Renaissance garden, inspired by the Italian Renaissance gardens; the French formal garden, the favorite style of Louis XIV;
and, in the 18th and 19th century, the French landscape garden, inspired by the English landscape garden.
The Garden of Diana was created during the reign of Henry IV.
It was the private garden of the King and Queen, and was visible from the windows of their rooms.
The fountain of Diana was originally in the center of garden, which at that time was enclosed by another wing, containing offices and later, under, Louis XIV, an orangerie.
The large pond next to the palace, with a surface of four hectares, was made during the reign of Henry IV, and was used for boating parties by members of the Court, and as a source of fish for the table and for amusement.
On the other side of the chateau, one the site of the garden of Francis I, Henry IV created a large formal garden, or parterre along the axis of the parterre.
He also built a grand canal 1200 meters long, similar to one at the nearby chateau of Fleury-en-Biere.

Rooms of Palace of Versailles, Parise, France from Travel with Iva Jasperson
Hello everyone...
The Palace of Versailles, Château de Versailles, or simply Versailles (English /vɛərˈsaɪ/ vair-sy or /vərˈsaɪ/ vər-sy; French: [vɛʁsaj]), is a royal château in Versailles in the Île-de-France region of France.
When the château was built, Versailles was a small village dating from the 11th century; today, however, it is a wealthy suburb of Paris, some 20 kilometers (12 miles) southwest of the center of the French capital (point zero at square in front of Notre Dame). Versailles was the seat of political power in the Kingdom of France from 1682, when Louis XIV moved the royal court from Paris until the royal family was forced to return to the capital in October 1789, within three months after the beginning of the French Revolution. Versailles is therefore famous not only as a building, but as a symbol of the system of absolute monarchy of the Ancien Régime.

Versailles, France - Palace of Versailles (2018)
The Palace of Versailles (French: Château de Versailles) was the principal residence of the Kings of France from Louis XIV in 1682 until the beginning of the French Revolution in 1789. It is located in the Yvelines Department of the Île-de-France region, about twenty kilometers (14 miles) southwest of the centre of Paris.
The Palace is now a French Historic Monument and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, notable especially for the ceremonial Hall of Mirrors, the jewel-like Opera theater, and royal apartments; for the more intimate royal residences, the Grand Trianon and Petit Trianon located within the park; the small rustic hamlet created for Marie Antoinette; and the vast Gardens of Versailles with fountains, canals, and geometric flower beds and groves, laid out by André le Nôtre. The Palace was stripped of all its furnishings after the French Revolution, but many pieces have been returned and many of the palace rooms have been restored.

Owning a French castle: not what it seems
The Tour de France loves castles. Not a day passes without the TV cameras zooming in on one of the country's magnificent châteaux along the race route. But one chateau buyer found that owning a castle isn't so easy. (July 15)

Chateau de Fontainebleau (Fontainebleau, France)
Travel Log: Chateau de Fontainebleau is one of the most beautiful castles in France, situated roughly 30 km south of Paris.
Its interior decorations are especially interesting as a fine example of the French Renaissance style. At the same time, its historical significance is hard to overestimate, since it was the preferred residence of French kings and emperors for 7 centuries.
Somewhat neglected during the French Revolution, the Fontainebleau castle is back to its glory under the reign of Napoleon I, who lived there for a long time and bade his farewell to his troops in the court of the castle in 1814. The visitor can see the Emperor's Throne room (unique in France) and his private appartments. Pope Pie VII visited Fontainebleau twice, first as a guest and then as a prisoner of Napoleon;
Napoleon spent the last days of his reign at Fontainebleau, before abdicating there on 4 April 1814, under pressure from his marechals, Ney, Berthier, and Lefebvre. On 20 April, after failing in attempt to commit suicide, he gave an emotional farewell to the soldiers of the Old Guard, assembled in the Court of Honor - the main grand stairway entrance.
One can visit the table where Napoleon signed his abdication of his monarchy on 4 April 1814, before his exile to Elba.
In his memoires, written while in exile on Saint Helena, he recalled his time at Fontainbleau; “…the true residence of Kings, the house of the centuries. Perhaps it was not a rigorously architectural palace, but it was certainly a place of residence well thought out and perfectly suitable. It was certainly the most comfortable and happily situated palace in Europe.”
The Chinese Museum, on the ground floor of the Gros Pavillon close to the pond, was among the last rooms decorated within the Chateau while it was still an imperial residence. Objects used in 1867 by Empress Eugenie contain those taken during the destruction and looting of the Old Summer Palace near Beijng by a joint British-French military expedition to China in 1860.
After a visit to the main building, one can take a stroll in the park and the gardens around the castle; one will see Diane's fountain and (if you are lucky) meet some large swans who live there.

Owning a French castle: not what it seems
(15 Jul 2019) SCRIPT:
VILLERSEXEL, France — The Tour de France loves castles. Not a day passes without the TV cameras zooming in on one of the country's magnificent châteaux along the race route, conjuring up dreams of living the high life, perhaps with a glass of Champagne in hand.
But the reality isn't always what it's cracked up to be.
Jean-Pierre Potet fell in love with the 19th-century Château de Villersexel, near Belfort in eastern France that was passed in the Tour's first week.
So in love, he bought it.
I was young, handsome, rich, and intelligent, the 78-year-old Potet says. I didn't choose the chateau, the chateau chose me.
But his love had expensive tastes.
After 50 years of upkeep, his money ran out.
I wanted to keep it in good condition and it cost me a lot of money, he says. Now the problem is that I have no more money.
But he did have a son, Basin-Jules Potet, with a business major and a ton of ideas.
When his father announced five years ago that he'd sold off the last of his lands around Paris to pay for castle maintenance, Basin-Jules convinced him to share his love with others.
Chateau rooms were converted for use as a bed and breakfast. They also host weddings and Basin-Jules runs an annual rock festival on the chateau grounds.
To bring young blood into old stone, Basin-Jules says.
When he does guided tours, showing visitors the stately rooms with painted ceilings, intricate wood carvings, and his father's collection of pianos and other antiques, Basin-Jules tells them that castle life has good sides and bad sides.
There is the dream, there are big rooms, he says. But it's not an easy life. You have to find a way to take care of the building, to find money.
It's a poisoned apple, he says.
His father says he has turned down would-be buyers, including Russians who offered him 3 million euros ($3.4 million) in cash.
They came with a suitcase full of money, he says. It was dirty money ... I said, 'No.'

Last Saturday (Oct. 10th), the 8 people in the IPP program, along with our resident director took a day trip about an hour or so south of Paris to two different chateaux. We had to meet at 9AM on the dot, our itinerary even said that we couldn't be late. I arrived with Emilia to the meeting spot about 15 minutes early, so we decided to hit up Franprix for a cheaper lunch. About 8:55, when we were checking out, I get a call from my friend Amira, saying that her alarm went off. Luckily our resident director was cool, and we waited for her, and then we were off in our large, tour-sized bus. It's actually quite humorous when you think about it that 9 people get this huge bus to ourselves. It was definitely spacious.
The first chateau we saw was Fontainebleau (pronounced FontainBlow. Not FontaineBlue). We got out of the bus, and of course it started raining (light rain, but still). I had a hood on my jacket, but left my umbrella at home, since weather.com did say it was supposed to be partly cloudy. Even with the rain, our resident director gave us an outside tour of the chateau. I didn't really listen, because I was too concerned about being wet. I think someone muttered something under their breath about the rain, and the RD said a little rain never hurt anyone.... Two minutes later we were inside. Since we had left later than expected, we only had about an hour and a half to get through the chateau. It was absolutely beautiful. I'm gonna say that this is the chateau of the Renaissance, because Francois I and some other Kings of the 1500s lived there during the period. Apparently Francois I had a great love for Italian architecture of the day, and brought in a lot of the Italian-inspired design to Chateau Fontainebleau.
We were supposed to meet back at the bus at 12:30. Guess where I was at 12:30... in the gift shop, picking out some postcards... Our group definitely has issues with being on time. Oh well, I was not the last one back to the bus just so you know!
The second chateau we visited was Vaux-le-Vicompte. This was a private chateau, no kings ever lived at the chateau, but they did stay from time to time. Once again, I began to space out as the RD was talking, because there was the cutest little girl playing on the steps in front of us. I did catch though, that Nicolas Fouquet lived there, a financial advisor to Louis XIV. Anyways, this chateau was really cool looking, the garden was absolutely beautiful. Also, we climbed up this scary staircase to the top of the chateau. Sometimes I wonder if the French are concerned with safety codes...
