Prisoners pour from Falaise Pocket - Normandy 1944
The last major battle of the Normandy campaign was fought in August 1944 in the so called Falaise-Argentan pocket, where the Allies encircled and destroyed a substantial part of the German forces. Nevertheless, tens of thousands of German soldiers managed to escape. After their breakthrough west of Saint-Lô at the end of July, the American forces moved far behind the German lines before heading North towards Le Mans, Alençon and Argentan. In the meantime, the British and Canadian armies pushed back the German forces from the North towards the town of Falaise. The failure of a German counterattack on 7 August, and Hitler’s foolish demand that his forces should hold their positions, led to the complete encirclement of the German 7th Army. Surrounded and shelled by Allied artillery, the Germans tried to make their way out by force, launching desperate attacks on the slopes of Mont-Ormel where they encountered Polish detachments. Both sides suffered heavy losses, but the few hundred Polish soldiers on the Mont-Ormel could hold their positions. German soldiers managed to escape, but the German losses were huge: about 10.000 men were killed and 40.000 to 50.000 were captured. In some places, including the bridges across the river Dives and the roads bordering the Mont-Ormel, the sight of dead men and horses was daunting.

12 STRONG - Official Trailer
On September 11, 2001, the world watched in terror. On September 12, 2001, they volunteered to fight. Watch the new trailer for #12StrongMovie now.
—
Chris Hemsworth and Oscar nominee, Michael Shannon, star in 12 STRONG, a powerful new war drama from Alcon Entertainment, Black Label Media and Jerry Bruckheimer Films.
Set in the harrowing days following 9/11, a U.S. Special Forces team, led by their new Captain, Mitch Nelson (Chris Hemsworth), is chosen to be the first U.S. troops sent into Afghanistan for an extremely dangerous mission. There, in the rugged mountains, they must convince Northern Alliance General Dostum (Navid Negahban) to join forces with them to fight their common adversary: the Taliban and their Al Qaeda allies. In addition to overcoming mutual distrust and a vast cultural divide, the Americans—accustomed to state-of-the-art warfare—must adopt the rudimentary tactics of the Afghani horse soldiers. But despite their uneasy bond, the new allies face overwhelming odds: outnumbered and outgunned by a ruthless enemy that does not take prisoners.
Directed by Nicolai Fuglsig and based on the acclaimed “Horse Soldiers” book by best-selling author Doug Stanton, 12 STRONG also stars Michael Peña, Navid Negahban, Trevante Rhodes, Geoff Stults, Thad Luckinbill, Austin Stowell, Ben O’Toole, Austin Hebert, Kenneth Miller, Kenny Sheard, Jack Kesy, Laith Nakli, Fahim Fazli, Yousuf Azami, Said Taghmaoui, Elsa Pataky, William Fichtner, and Rob Riggle.

303rd Bomb Group, Molesworth, Site 7
The 303d Bombardment Group consisted of the following squadrons:
358th Bombardment (Code VK)
359th Bombardment (Code BN)
360th Bombardment (Code PU)
427th Bombardment (Code GN)
The 358th flew the first mission for the group on November 17, 1942. The group would become one of the legendary units of the Eighth Air Force. Initially missions were conducted against targets such as aerodromes, railways, and submarine pens in France until 1943, then flying missions into Germany itself.
The 303d took part in the first penetration into Germany by heavy bombers of Eighth Air Force by striking the U-boat yard at Wilhelmshaven on January 27, 1943 then attacked other targets such as the ball-bearing plants at Schweinfurt, shipbuilding yards at Bremen, a synthetic rubber plant at Huls, an aircraft engine factory at Hamburg, industrial areas of Frankfurt, an aerodrome at Villacoublay, and a marshalling yard at Le Mans.
The 303d received a Distinguished Unit Citation for an operation on January 11, 1944 when, in spite of continuous attacks by enemy fighters in weather that prevented effective fighter cover from reaching the group, it successfully struck an aircraft assembly plant at Oschersleben.
The group attacked gun emplacements and bridges in the Pas de Calais area during the invasion of Normandy in June 1944; bombed enemy troops to support the breakthrough at St Lo in July 1944. It struck airfields, oil depots, and other targets during the Battle of the Bulge, and bombed military installations in the Wesel area to aid the Allied assault across the Rhine in March 1945.
The last mission for the 303d was flown on April 25, 1945. when it attacked an armament works in Pilsen. During its combat tour the group flew 364 missions comprising 10,271 sorties, dropped 26,346 tons of bombs and shot down 378 enemy aircraft with another 104 probables. The group also saw 817 of its men killed in action with another 754 becoming prisoners of war.
On May 31, 1945, the 303d Bomb Group left Molesworth, moving to Casablanca, French Morocco.
Wulf Hound
On 12 December 1942, a 303rd B-17 named Wulf Hound (41-24585) became the first B-17 to be captured intact by the Luftwaffe. During a raid on the marshalling yards in Rouen-Sotterville, Wulf Hound was damaged and began losing altitude. Over the Netherlands it was intercepted by a Messerschmitt Bf 110. Deciding that their only chance for survival was surrender, the pilot lowered the wheels on the bomber and it was escorted to Leeuwarden airfield. The B-17 was subsequently studied intensely by the Germans who used this information to refine their tactics for attacking B-17 bomber formations. The final fate of Wulf Hound is unknown although it is believed to have taken part in multiple clandestine missions as late as May and June 1944.
Legacy
The 303d Bomb Group was deactivated in Morocco on July 23, 1945. Personnel demobilised and the B-17 aircraft sent to storage.
During the Cold War, the United States Air Force Strategic Air Command 303d Bombardment Wing, Medium flew Boeing B-29 Superfortresses and later Boeing B-47 Stratojet from Davis-Monthan AFB Arizona beginning in 1951. The wing was bestowed the honours and history of the USAAF 303d Bombardment Group in 1952. The wing was inactivated in 1964 with the phaseout of the B-47.
In the late 1980s, the USAFE 303d Tactical Missile Wing was reactivated at Molesworth with BGM-109G Gryphon Ground Launched Cruise Missiles (GLCMs). The GLCM era however, was short lived as the wing was discontinued and deactivated in 1989.

WEST BANK: ISRAELI SETTLER SHOT DEAD IN LAND DISPUTE
English/Nat
An Israeli settler was shot and killed on Sunday and another seriously wounded in a dispute over land with a group of Bedouin shepherds.
One of the Bedouin was hospitalised in critical condition with three bullet wounds to the chest.
The Israeli army said a third settler was slightly injured.
The shooting took place on a dirt road leading to the Jewish settlement of Maon, in the rocky hills south of Hebron.
The Israeli army said a clash had broken out between several settlers and a group of Bedouin.
One of the Bedouin was said to have grabbed a settler's gun and opened fire on the Israelis.
But a Bedouin man involved in the incident disputed the official account - he claimed the Jewish settler opened fire wildly.
Israeli army helicopters scoured the hills, searching for the assailants, and soldiers conducted a house-to-house search of the nearby Palestinian village of Yata.
Three Arab men and a boy were held for questioning near the scene of the shooting.
The army said there has been a long-standing conflict over land in the valley.
Bedouin shepherds say their land is being taken - claims disputed by the settlers.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
It is not an argument. They claim that this is their land - just like they claim Jerusalem. It is not a claim specifically about this land. So they killed him with his own gun and then his friend came to help him and they shot him too.
SUPER CAPTION: Noam Federman, Hebron Settler
Two settlers were injured in the incident - one of them seriously.
And a Bedouin man - Moussa Dababashe - was taken to the Alia hospital after being shot three times in the chest.
The dead man was identified as Dov Dribben, who was 28.
Israel Radio said he was the father of four children.

263-Memories of Proust
Confined in a Soviet prison camp in 1941, Polish painter Józef Czapski chose a unique way to cope: He lectured to the other prisoners on Marcel Proust's novel In Search of Lost Time. In this week's episode of the Futility Closet podcast we'll describe Czapski's ambitious project and the surprising importance of literature to the prisoners of oppressive regimes.
We'll also race some lemons and puzzle over a woman's birthdays.

Inside El Chapo’s Escape Tunnel
Infamous drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, who daringly escaped prison on July 11, utilized a tunnel leading from the only “supermax” maximum-security prison in Mexico, where he'd been held. At least that's the explanation Mexican authorities have given as to how the leader of the Sinaloa cartel escaped prison for the second time.
In the aftermath of the escape, VICE News went to Almoloya de Juarez to inspect the exit of the tunnel that “El Chapo allegedly used, and spoke with an activist and former inmate of Altiplano prison who claims to have discovered flaws in the authorities’ version of events.

The Kellner Affair - sample page slideshow
The Kellner Affair
by Peter M. Larsen and Ben Erickson
For release January, 2018
In Paris, spring was in the air on March 21, 1942. It was a welcome relief. In France, that winter had been one of the coldest in living memory. But by mid-March, the frost had lost its grip and the pale yellow tips of Easter Lilies poked timidly out of the soil. On the sidewalks, cafés and brasseries, life went on as people were at a loss to decide which winter garment to toss as they soaked up the sun and warmed their hearts with news that the tides of war finally seemed to be turning.
At Mont Valérien, the prison fortress and Nazi place of execution outside the city, winter remained in the hearts of prisoners and guards alike. Early in the morning, the condemned had been removed from their cells and transported to the place of execution. One by one they were tied to the killing posts to await their death, as the firing squad made ready. The first shots rang out at 4:01 p.m. The last at 4:23. The famous coachbuilder Jacques Kellner and Georges Paulin, the gifted designer of gorgeous aerodynamic cars, were dead. Three of their comrades were also slumped on the ground. It was a routine execution, all in a day’s work.
For the Gestapo-controlled court that had handed down the death sentences and the German conscripts who fired the bullets, it was a case of finishing the business, once the culprits had been caught and “justice” metered out. Some names to cross off a list. For France and the nascent French Résistance, it was the loss of heroes who had been willing to give their lives to fight the Nazis and paid the price. For their relatives and loved ones, it was the unbearable loss of what they held dearest in the world.
The Kellner Affair tells the fascinating story of how some of the most influential people in the French luxury car business before the War came together and fought bravely against the Nazi occupation force in Paris. It goes deeply into their talent, their work, their life and their loved ones, relying on newly discovered archive material. It is the first factual account of what took place before that beautiful spring day and what came after: what happened, how it happened, who was to blame, who was punished and who was not.
Benny Hill - Heroes Through the Ages (1989)
Heroes Through the Ages starts with several Angels dancing to Holding Out For A Hero, (a 1983 hit for Bonnie Tyler, performed here by Francesca Boulter who was credited along with The Ladybirds as Vocal Backing on this show. - William Brown), in what appears to a POW Camp. It starts with cavemen Benny and Bob Todd fighting over sexy cavewoman, Lorraine Doyle. They fight each other with sticks, with Benny winning Lorraine, until Bob throws a stone behind him and accidentaly hitting Benny on the head. Next, Benny and his sidekick are vikings that invade a small village and they try to kidnap Lorraine Doyle and another girl. (The sidekick in this case may have been Duggie Small. - William Brown). In the end, Benny gets bopped on the head and Jon Jon Keefe, Lorraine and Bob run off together. In France, Benny duels with Bob Todd to protect Lorraine Doyle. Benny gives Bob some snuff and Benny walks away with all of the women. Then, a duel between Henry McGee and Benny. Henry's gun blows up and Benny walks away with the girl. We move to World War I and Benny throws a hand grenade to German Bob Todd who holds it just a little too long. In World War II, Benny is a sniper attempting to assassinate Adolf Hitler. However, he is distracted by the beautiful Lorraine Doyle covered in nothing but at a towel through her bedroom window. Benny escapes from some Nazi soldiers who spot him, but is ambushed by Lorraine Doyle and another girl as German officers. They make Benny strip down to his underwear. Then they strip down to their bustiers, stockings and heels and use his clothing as a disguise. Benny is then captured and put in the middle of a firing squad who wind up shooting each other. It all ends back in the POW Camp. All of the girls run off with soldiers. Johnny Hutch winds up with Bob Todd in drag.
The Battle of Doiran - Turmoil In The French Army I THE GREAT WAR Week 144
Meet Indy & the Crew at Stow Maries WW1 Aerodrome:
The Salonica Front had been quiet over the winter, but much like the recent battles on the Western Front, it erupted this week. The British Army tried to take the Bulgarian positions at Doiran - these positions might have been some of the best defences of the entire war. After the failed Nivelle Offensive, some French soldiers start to question the whole war.
