Obiettivo 2021, quando l'intervento sullo storico edificio sarà completato. Riconsegnando alla città molto più di ciò che sono state fino ad ora le Procuratie.

Piazza San Marco, is the principal public square of Venice, Italy, where it is generally known just as the Piazza (la Piazza). All other urban spaces in the city (except the Piazzetta and the Piazzale Roma) are called campi (fields). The Piazzetta (the 'little Piazza') is an extension of the Piazza towards the lagoon in its south east corner (see plan). The two spaces together form the social, religious and political centre of Venice and are commonly considered together. This article relates to both of them.
A remark usually attributed to Napoleon calls the Piazza San Marco the drawing room of Europe (the attribution to Napoleon is unproven).
Description of the Piazza
The Piazza is dominated at its eastern end by the great church of St Mark. It is described here by a perambulation starting from the west front of the church (facing the length of the Piazza) and proceeding to the right.The church is described in the article St Mark's Basilica, but there are aspects of it which are so much a part of the Piazza that they must be mentioned here, including the whole of the west facade with its great arches and marble decoration, the Romanesque carvings round the central doorway and, above all, the four horses which preside over the whole piazza and are such potent symbols of the pride and power of Venice that the Genoese in 1379 said that there could be no peace between the two cities until these horses had been bridled; four hundred years later, Napoleon, after he had conquered Venice, had them taken down and shipped to Paris.
The Piazzetta dei Leoncini is an open space on the north side of the church named after the two marble lions (presented by Doge Alvise Mocenigo in 1722), but now officially called the Piazzetta Giovanni XXIII. The neo-classic building on the east side adjoining the Basilica is the Palazzo Patriarcale, the seat of the Patriarch of Venice.
Beyond that is the Clock Tower (Torre dell'Orologio), completed in 1499, above a high archway where the street known as the Merceria (a main thoroughfare of the city) leads through shopping streets to the Rialto, the commercial and financial center. To the right of the clock-tower is the closed church of San Basso, designed by Baldassare Longhena (1675), sometimes open for exhibitions.[5]
To the left is the long arcade along the north side of the Piazza, the buildings on this side are known as the Procuratie Vecchie, the old procuracies, formerly the homes and offices of the Procurators of St. Mark, high officers of state in the days of the republic of Venice. They were built in the early 16th century. The arcade is lined with shops and restaurants at ground level, with offices above. The restaurants include the famous Caffe Quadri, which was patronized by the Austrians when Venice was ruled by Austria in the 19th century, while the Venetians preferred Florian's on the other side of the Piazza.Turning left at the end, the arcade continues along the west end of the Piazza, which was rebuilt by Napoleon about 1810 and is known as the Ala Napoleonica (Napoleonic Wing). It holds, behind the shops, a ceremonial staircase which was to have led to a royal palace but now forms the entrance to the Museo Correr (Correr Museum).

Turning left again, the arcade continues down the south side of the Piazza. The buildings on this side are known as the Procuratie Nuove (new procuracies), which were designed by Jacopo Sansovino in the mid 16th century but partly built (1582-6) after his death by Vincenzo Scamozzi apparently with alterations required by the Procurators and finally completed by Baldassare Longhena about 1640.[6] Again, the ground floor has shops and also the Caffè Florian, a famous cafe opened in 1720 by Floriano Francesconi, which was patronised by the Venetians when the hated Austrians were at Quadri's. The upper floors were intended by Napoleon to be a palace for his stepson Eugène Beauharnais, his viceroy in Venice, and now houses the Museo Correr. At the far end the Procuratie meet the north end of Sansovino's Libreria (mid-16th century), whose main front faces the Piazzetta and is described there. Il progetto dello studio Chipperfield Architects Milan ha ricevuto a fine maggio il permesso di costruire da parte del Comune di Venezia. Per la prima volta, dopo 500 anni, una porzione dell’iconico complesso di Piazza San Marco diverrà accessibile, ospitando la “casa” della Fondazione The Human Safety Net. La consegna è prevista entro il 2021.
Le Procuratie Vecchie si rifanno il trucco, e ci sarà anche un ponte levatoio...
Erano gli alloggi dei procuratori, gli alti magistrati veneziani, fin dal tredicesimo secolo. Nel corso del tempo sono state distrutte, ricostruite, ora in parte ospitano uffici e negozi. Ora le Procuratie Vecchie verranno del tutto rinnovate, aperte al pubblico e a disposizione di progetti sociali. Fine dei lavori prevista: 2020.

A 500 year old Venice landmark that forms part of one of the world's most famous squares is getting a makeover.
While the facade of the Procuratie Vecchie will remain unchanged, the inside will be restored and will open to the public for the first time in centuries.
STORYLINE:
St. Mark's Square is one of the most famous places in the world.
Thousands come to Venice to see it every year and yet it would appear it still has secrets to unveil.
A 500-year-old palazzo that forms part of the colonnaded perimeter is getting a makeover.
The new project unveiled in Venice is the initiative of the Italian insurer Generali, which made its Italian headquarters in the Procuratie Vecchie palace from 1832.
When finished, the restored building will be open to the public for the first time in 500 years.
It will be home to Generali's new Human Safety Net initiative, which will bring together organizations working to help refugees, disadvantaged families and projects involving newborn health.
This home for Human Safety Net will be open to the public, so the 20,000 people who come to St. Mark's Square every year will be able to go into, after 500 years, this Human Safety Net home to understand what the project is and contribute if they want to, explains Generali CEO Philippe Donnet.
We are thus giving a new activity and purpose to the Procuratie Vecchie, it is not a business activity, it is a social activity, it is a real activity that isn't linked to tourism.
The restoration involves 11,000 square metres over four floors and is to due be completed by 2020.
British architect David Chipperfield is bringing his expertise in restoring historic buildings to a familiar, but perhaps overlooked, 500-year-old palazzo.
You want to understand the building and you want to understand what the building wants to be again. You are digging and trying to understand what it's character is, not what it used to be, not what it is, but out of everything to make some sort of synthesis which makes sense. We've all been in those buildings and walk in and say 'oh what a shame they did that, I wonder why they covered that up' – all of those things where the integrity of the building is being lost and obviously that's what you want to get rid of. You want to make sure that simple and innocent ideas like we need another staircase, or we need a pipe running across a room are done in a way that it doesn't look like someone needed a pipe running across the room, or someone needed an extra staircase which is in the wrong place. It's about making these modifications look as if they were intended from the beginning.
Generali, which has its global headquarters in nearby Trieste, is also behind the renovations of the Royal Gardens on the Giudecca canal side of the Procuratie Nuove.
The gardens were once the domain of the Austrian Empress Elisabeth, popularly known as Sissi, and have long fallen into disuse.
Recreating Sissi's Royal Garden would be too costly, so the project will instead incorporate more trees and plants to shade and offer respite to Venetians and tourists alike.
In addition, a bridge from the gardens through Procuratie Nuove and into Piazza San Marco will be reopened after many years, giving the public new views on the city's most historic piazza.
It will be the big connection to the city and I must say it is charming because it will be pulled up when the boats will go through, explains Paolo Pejrone, gardener and architect in charge of the garden renovations.
It will be down most of the time as there is not much going on here, but it used to be a possibility to separate the house from the garden and the garden from the house - it is charming, and once renovated it will be a great toy.

Opposite to this, standing free in the Piazza, is the Campanile of St Mark's church (1156/73 last restored in 1514), rebuilt in 1912 ' com'era, dov'era ' (as it was, where it was) after the collapse of the former campanile on 14 July 1902. Adjacent to the Campanile, facing towards the church, is the elegant small building known as the Loggetta del Sansovino, built by Sansovino in 1537-46, and used as a lobby by patricians waiting to go into a meeting of the Great Council in the Doges Palace and by guards when the Great Council was sitting.
Across the Piazza in front of the church are three large mast-like flagpoles with bronze bases decorated in high relief by Alessandro Leopardi in 1505. The Venetian flag of St Mark used to fly from them in the time of the republic of Venice and now shares them with the Italian flag.

The restaurants include the famous Caffè Quadri, which was patronized by the Austrians when Venice was ruled by Austria in the 19th century, while the Venetians preferred Florian's on the other side of the Piazza.
Turning left at the end, the arcade continues along the west end of the Piazza, which was rebuilt by Napoleon about 1810 and is known as the Ala Napoleonica (Napoleonic Wing). The square was separated from the palace by a small canal, the Rio Batario. Already a central gathering place for Venetians, the piazza was enlarged in 1174 after the canal and an adjoining dock were filled in. The square became paved with bricks in 1267 in a herringbone pattern. In 1735 the bricks were replaced with natural stone and laid in a more complicated pattern according to a design devised by architect Andrea Tirali. Around the Square
As the largest square in the city and the only one given the designation of piazza (the others are all referred to as campi), St. Mark's Square has always been the location of important government buildings and other facilities central to the goings on in Venice.

If you want to appreciate the square in all its splendor, go to the cathedral's façade near the three stands for banners (and stop to admire the beautiful bronze bases from the early sixteenth century) and turn around. From here the square looks like a theatrical backdrop enclosed between compact buildings of equal height that are perfectly harmonized, although in reality, if you observe them more carefully you'll see that they come from different ages.
To your right, the north side in the direction of the Mercerie is closed by a 150-meter long building and ends at the clock tower, which I'll discuss in a separate file. The building dates back to the beginning of the 1500s, and today houses offices and shops including the historic showroom of Olivetti, a design jewel. It's called Procuratie Vecchie because it once housed the residences of the procurators, or those who were responsible for the construction and maintenance of St. Mark's, along with their families.
On the other side, on your left, you have the symmetrical structure of the Procuratie Nuove, which were built at the end of the 1500s as an ideal extension of the nearby Marciana Library. The three rows of arcades are like the practical construction of an architectural treatise inspired by classical antiquity: you can see Doric style on the ground floor, Ionic style on the first floor, and Corinthian style on the second floor…
