Riese [ˈʁiːzə] (German for giant) is the code name for a construction project of Nazi Germany in 1943–1945, consisting of seven underground structures located in the Owl Mountains and Książ Castle in Lower Silesia, previously Germany, now a territory of Poland.
None of them were finished; all are in different states of completion with only a small percentage of tunnels reinforced by concrete.
The purpose of the project remains uncertain because of the lack of documentation. Some sources suggest that all the structures were part of the Führer

Poland confirms existence of underground Nazi gold train - Daily Mail
The Nazi gold train, believed to contain 'extremely valuable items', has been found along a 4km stretch of railway track on the Wroclaw-Walbrzych line (pictured main and top right) in south-west Poland. Today, Piotr Zuchowski (bottom right), Poland’s National Heritage and Conservation Officer, announced that a man who helped hide the Nazi gold train had revealed its location shortly before he died. Polish authorities have seen evidence of the train’s existence from pictures taken using a ground-penetrating radar.

Project Riese was a secret underground construction project undertaken by the Third Reich between 1943 and 1945 in and around the Owl Mountains. It is believed that the enigmatic Nazi super weapon 'Die Glocke' was built there.

Markthalle Nummer 1) – zbudowana według projektu Richarda Plüddemanna i Heinricha Küstera w latach 1906–1908[a]. Mieści się przy ul. Piaskowej (Sandstraße), u zbiegu z pl. Nankiera (Ritterplatz) i ul. św. Ducha (Heiligegeiststraße), w bezpośredniej bliskości wyspy Piasek, mostu Piaskowego i najstarszych dzielnic miasta. Hala stanowi cenny zabytek sztuki inżynierskiej.
Halę Targową nr I wzniesiono dla uporządkowania handlu w centrum miasta, który odbywał się wcześniej m.in. na Nowym Targu. Prawie identyczna Hala Targowa nr II tych samych projektantów powstała w tym samym czasie przy ul. Kolejowej, lecz po poważnym uszkodzeniu w 1945 została wyburzona w 1973.
Przedtem na miejscu Hali nr 1 znajdował się czternastowieczny dwór biskupów lubuskich, który na początku XVI wieku przebudowano na Arsenał Piaskowy. Działkę arsenału, należącą od roku 1511 do miasta, w 1889 powiększono dokonując zakupu sąsiednich domów z zamysłem wzniesienia hali targowej. Wielokrotnie przekładaną decyzję o ważnej dla miasta inwestycji ostatecznie podjęto 19 lutego 1901 i przystąpiono do prac projektowych.
1 października 1905 rozpoczęto rozbiórkę arsenału i sąsiednich domów. Później wmurowano w północną elewację Hali znalezione w czasie prac ziemnych kamienne kule armatnie na pamiątkę po poprzednim przeznaczeniu tego miejsca. Jesienią 1906 rozpoczęto budowę hali o żelbetowej konstrukcji piwnicy i pierwotnie planowanej stalowych wiązarach dachowych. Roboty budowlane przy fundamentach i poziomie piwnic wykonywała początkowo firma Theodor Hülssner z Lipska. W związku z propozycją firm budujących obie powstające hale oraz porównaniu kosztów zdecydowano się na przeprojektowanie konstrukcji z użyciem żelbetu zamiast stali. Ponownie rozpisany przetarg wygrała firma Lolat-Eisenbeton z Wrocławia[b]. 5 października 1908 przekazano halę do użytku.
Z trzech stron Hala przylega do ulic, jedynie od południa przybudowana jest do sąsiednich budynków, powstałych częściowo jako zaplecze administracyjne Hali. Elewacja północna zaakcentowana jest dwiema wieżami, nawiązującymi do dawnej funkcji obronnej tego miejsca, przy czym wyższa wieża północno-zachodnia mieściła kiedyś zegar (dziś nieczynny). Wnętrze rozwiązane jest osiowo i ma układ bazylikowy z główną nawą na kierunku wschód-zachód, obustronnie niższymi nakrytymi dachem płaskim nawami bocznymi oraz trzema nawami poprzecznymi - dwiema od północy i jedną dłuższą od południa. W nawach bocznych na poziomie piętra znajduje się galeria obiegająca nawę główną. Zaprojektowane przez Heinricha Küstera przekrycie Hali, wsparte w głównej nawie na żelbetowych łukach parabolicznych o rozstawie podpór 20,65 m i wysokości przekraczającej 17 m stanowi pionierskie w skali światowej osiągnięcie inżynierskie. Podziemia hali mieszczą piwnice wysokości do 3,7 metra. Zewnętrzna szata budynku z ceglanego muru z oszczędnie stosowanym detalem kamiennym, inspirowana giełdą w Amsterdamie Berlagego, posiada cechy nawiązującego do średniowiecza nurtu historyzmu, podczas gdy wnętrze jest już całkowicie modernistyczne.
Budynek nie był poważnie zniszczony przez działania wojenne w 1945 i praktycznie zaraz po wojnie wykorzystywany był zgodnie z przeznaczeniem. Gruntowny remont przeszedł w latach 1980–1983 i od tego czasu należy do największych miejsc targowych w całym mieście.

Das Gesamtvolumen dieser Objekte umfasst bisher (bekannt) mehr als 100.000 m3.
Eine ungefähre Berechnung der angefallenen Menge von ca. 70.000 m3 des Betons der bisher bekannten Bauten, geben uns einen Aufschluss was demnach noch nicht entdeckt wurde.
Im Vergleich zu den Daten von Albert Speer wissen wir von mehr als 100.000 m³, Tunnel und 180.000 m3 Beton die aus den Akten hervorgehen.

Historian and broadcaster Dan Snow leads an investigation into one of the history stories of the decade - the hunt for a buried Nazi Gold Train.
In August 2015 two amateur researchers, turned treasure hunters, declared they’d found a lost Nazi train buried in an obscure railway cutting near Walbrzych in Silesia, Southern Poland. Better still, they believed the train might be loaded with gold, armaments or precious treasure, all left behind by the Nazis at the end of WWII. The claim sparked a global media frenzy.
Locals have long believed that at least one train - loaded with looted Nazi gold - left the provincial capital Wroclaw in early 1945. But until now, no one has discovered what happened to it.
Dan Snow follows the treasure hunters as they hunt for the gold train, while also carrying out his own investigation into this extraordinary story, one that leads all the way to Adolf Hitler himself and his secret plans for this remote corner of the Third Reich during the closing months of World War II.
Dan explores the astonishing underground tunnel complex called Riese (Giant), built on the Fuhrer’s orders almost certainly as an underground city to house armaments production beyond the reach of Allied bombing
Nearby Dan visits the stunning Ksiaz Place castle which at the end of the war was converted into a possible bolt-hole for Hitler and his High Command. A door from the Fuhrer’s bedroom leads to a lift-shaft down to tunnels that could have linked the palace with the underground Riese complex.
With the Soviets closing in from the East and the Allies from the West, Dan considers the evidence that Hitler was planning to retreat to this near impregnable complex… and fight on.
As Dan uncovers Hitler’s possible plans for this region it also lends weight to the theories and stories that there’s a hidden tunnel here, a tunnel that could even contain the legendary train full of gold.
Finally, Dan joins the treasure hunters as they begin the excavation itself - and reveals the outcome of the Hunt for the Nazi Gold Train.

Dan visits one of the eerie underground structures, part of Nazi Germany's Project Reise, during the latter stages of the war. Construction was done by forced labour - prisoners of war and prisoners of concentration camps - many of whom died in these tunnels.

Nazi Gold Train Story
The Nazi Gold Train is a local legend of a Nazi German-era train buried in a tunnel underground in Lower Silesia in January 1945 toward the end of World War II. The area is now part of southwest Poland, but was then in southeast Germany. Many searches for the train have been conducted since the Second World War with no evidence of a train found.
A search in 2015–2016 received global media interest, culminating in a dig involving the Polish military, local and state officials, but turned up only dirt.
The train is believed to be near the Polish city of Wałbrzych, which until 1945 was the German city of Waldenburg.
According to local legend, the train left Breslau (now Wrocław) laden with gold and other treasures. It was driven into a system of tunnels under the Owl Mountains that were part of an unfinished Nazi secret Project Riese (German for giant)near Wałbrzych. There it was buried in a warren of tunnels and mines created by the Nazis. The train is rumoured to hold up to 300 tonnes of gold, jewels, weapons and masterpieces.
In Poland's Communist era, the Polish army carried out fruitless searches. According to historians, it has never been proven the train ever existed. And to this day has never been found.
