PRYTANIA THEATRE WALK THRU | NEW ORLEANS
It was 1996, and it looked very much like the end of an era in New Orleans. The Prytania Theatre, the last of the city's old neighborhood moviehouses -- and which originally opened in December 1914, when more than 60 neighborhood theaters dotted the city's map -- was slated for closure. Landmark Theaters, which had operated it, decided the theater was no longer profitable, and the building's then-owner filed for a permit to have it torn down. It even had a date with the wrecking ball -- Dec. 2 -- and demolition equipment was rolled in to do the job. That's when Chris Riley and Rene Brunet Jr. stepped in. Riley bought the building and Brunet, who had been operating movie theaters all his life, signed on to operate it. On April 18, 1997, it reopened with a 25 th anniversary print of The Godfather. The show, it was clear, would go on.
NOW : Brunet died Aug. 17 at age 95 , but his family -- led by son Robert -- is committed to keeping the Prytania running. Billed as the oldest operating movie theater in the New Orleans metro area, and the only conventional single-screen theater still operating on a full-time basis in Louisiana, the theater was bought in 2003 by businessman John Gish, who signed a 50-year lease with the Brunet family to keep it running well into the 21 st century -- and, as Robert Brunet insists, beyond.
Riley, who was 29 at the time he bought the Prytania building, knew first-hand what it meant to the city. I used to go to that theater when I was a kid, he said in a 1996 interview with The Times-Picayune. I wanted to keep it in the neighborhood.
The Brunets had to race to reopen the theater. If it remained closed for more than six months, it would have lost its commercial zoning. In that time, the gutted theater received a new roof, a new screen, new projector and sound equipment, a new concession stand and an auditorium filled with blue seats that had originally occupied the Kenilworth theater in New Orleans East. (Those seats have since been replaced.)
The Prytania earned a measure of literary immortality, having been mentioned in John Kennedy Toole's Pulitzer-winning A Confederacy of Dunces.
The theater has burned at least twice: in November 1926 and again in April 1968. In both cases, it was renovated and reopened in short order.
The Prytania has gone through a number of owners and operators over the years. It was opened in December 1914 by M.H. Jacobs, who merged his theaters into United Artists in 1930. Operations were taken over in 1977 by Movies Inc., which merged in 1982 with Landmark Theaters. Landmark ran the theater until Riley bought it in late 1996 and the Brunets took over as operators in 1997.
Part of the Brunets' vision for the theater was to give it a nostalgic, old-time feel. That being said, it was the first movie theater in the New Orleans area to convert entirely to digital projection, which it did in 2009 . It still, however, maintains a 35mm film projector for special events.
The theater was the first in New Orleans to reopen after 2005's Hurricane Katrina, when Rene Brunet threw open its doors and offered free movies to first-responders for several months. The first movie to show after the storm: the locally shot Ryan Reynolds comedy Waiting.
In 2009, the theater hosted a red-carpet local premiere of the Sandra Bullock drama The Blind Side. Bullock, who was in attendance, went on to earn an Oscar for her performance in the film.
In addition to the Prytania, members of the Brunet family have run a number of New Orleans movie theaters over the years, including the Harlequin, Imperial, Famous, Circle, Carver, Clabon, Gallo, the Joy on Canal Street and the Loew's State.
In 2012, Rene Brunet Jr. co-authored a history book with Jack Stewart titled There's One in Your Neighborhood: The Lost Movie Theaters of New Orleans.
N.O. DNA
When the Prytania first opened its doors, movies were still silent and still a novelty. As the decades passed, and as cinema became America's top choice for escapist entertainment, the Prytania evolved with the times. Thanks to the Brunet family, the venerable theater is still a place of grand escape. It's also a touchstone to the past, a nostalgic throwback that offers moviegoers something absent from most multiplexes: a personal touch. If nothing else, the Prytania's 1996 flirtation with extinction reminded New Orleanians of the jewel in their midst, as evidenced by a story told in 1997 by theater operator Alba Houston, as she remembered the Prytania's re-opening weekend. This lady came to the window, pushed a five dollar bill in and said, 'I don't want a ticket; I don't like 'The Godfather,' Houston remembered. 'But I live in the neighborhood and I just want you to know we're glad it's back.'

René Brunet - 2009 Peoples Health Champion
On November 25, 2008, at the age of 87, René Brunet introduced the first fully digital movie theater to the metro New Orleans area. With an investment of more than a half million dollars in state-of-the-art technology, René established the historic Prytania Theatre as one of the most advanced movie houses in America.
Until René took over the theater in 1996, the Prytania’s future seemed dim. Single-screen, neighborhood theaters were considered relics of the past—quaint remnants of times before television, DVDs and streaming video. Unable to fill their seats, community movie houses throughout the country succumbed to economic reality. Many were demolished or carved into multi-screen “mini-plexes.” But René Brunet defied convention, and the Prytania—the only single-screen theater still operating in all of Louisiana—continues to attract sell-out crowds.
What gave René Brunet the confidence to invest in a neighborhood, single-screen environment that others consider extinct? René will tell you it comes from over 80 years of going to the movies. An avid movie-goer since seeing his first silent film, René recognized the power of film to captivate and transport us to another world.
As the medium evolved over the decades, René tracked audience patterns and trends. What did they want? What brought them out to the movies? René came to understand that success in this business is not just about showing the latest blockbuster; success comes from building a first-rate experience—from the moment they are greeted in the lobby to the time they head back home.
René’s life experience taught him that while technology and tastes may change, a high-quality cinematic experience will always be in demand. And if the Prytania Theatre’s ongoing popularity is any indication, René Brunet is quite a learned man.

http://www.vrbo.com/180206 Architectural Work of Art Turn of the Century Uptown Home
This house is the ideal location for Superdome and Convention Center events (10 minute drive). Located four houses off renowned Magazine Street. This New Orleans home is ideally located for a casual stroll to antique and eclectic shops, unique restaurants, the many bars and coffeehouses, or to just enjoy the scenic street shaded by beautiful old oak trees. In the heart of historic uptown New Orleans, you are only a streetcar ride from many local attractions. The St. Charles Avenue Streetcar takes you to the famous French Quarter; the Convention Center; the Riverwalk; and the Superdome; all within three miles.
The following is just a sampling of my favorite restaurants, music venues, and fun things to do close to my home:
Walking distance:
Mona's: excellent Mediterranean food, inexpensive, BYOL; Baru: (great tapas) Jamaican cuisine; 2 fantastic French restaurants: Petite Grocery and Lilette; Theo's pizza; Ignatius Eatery (all New Orleans food); Nirvana: Indian cuisine; Casamento's: best oysters in the city; Savvy Gourmet Restaurant; Superior Grill; Canon's Restaurants on scenic St. Charles; Fuel Coffee House and Magazine Perks for goood coffee; Le Bon Temps Roule (great local live music, NEVER a cover charge, good late food), Brother's III Lounge (more of a local neighborhood bar); Ms. Maes famous 24 hour iconic bar; Buddah Belly Bar; Fat Harry's Bar; and of course, world renown Tipitina's for big name live music, and of course, all or the eclectic shops on Magazine St (too numerous to count!)
Very close (VERY short drive, longer walk): Dick and Jenny's: a must (probably the best food in the city...really!); La Crepe Nanou, French, in expensive, my favorite; Frankis and Johnny's; Sunday brunch or cocktails at Column's Hotel; Commander's Palace for the ultimate classy New Orleans experience, sushi at Kyoto; evening live music at Dos Jefe's Cigar Bar, Upperline Restaurant, Balcony Bar and Grill, Bulldog Bar and Grill, Cafe Rani (good place to sit outside under a big oak), August Moon (Chinese); Mahoney's Po Boy Shop (great Po Boys!); Delachaise and Canon's Restaurants on scenic St. Charles Ave; Nacho Mama's (Mexican and GREAT margaritas); Reginelli's Pizzaria; Prytania Theatre (stand alone neighborhood movie theater); cemetery and Garden District walking tours, Whole Foods.
Short drive: French Quarter, Convention center, Superdome, New Orleans Arena, Downtown, Audabon Park and Zoo, The River Walk, New Orleans Center, countless restaurants and shops.
There is off street parking for three vehicles. (Although you really do not need one!) The house is fully furnished, has wireless internet; satellite TV (Direct TV) with NFL Sunday Ticket package; two Huge HD TV's; modern kitchen; washer and dryer. Upstairs is a spacious loft with two large balconies; wet bar; jacuzzi and glass shower. Downstairs are two bedrooms, the larger bedroom has a queen bed and the smaller bedroom has a full bed (which is actually a very comfortable full sized futon with a memory foam mattress).
In the back of the house is a shaded garden patio with a bar-b-q and hammock.
This is not a condo or a duplex ~ this a most unique and beautiful home. It is truly a work of art. I am very particular about who I rent the property to because it is MY HOME, and I will only be renting it out for a limited time. If you are interested, I suggest you reserve your spot today. It'll be my pleasure to assist you in any way during your stay. I have lived in every part of the city and I can assure you that staying here will give you the feel of the REAL New Orleans!
For exact location and proximity, I recommend Googling the intersection of Magazine Street and Marengo Street. You can then easily see the proximity to all the local attractions.
