We will guide you through them during daylight, and also during the night, when they are filled with people from around the globe, as well as local Hungarians.
But what are ruin bars, and how do they contribute to the Budapest Nightlife scene?
Ruin bars are something we only have in here, they are special to Budapest.
There are a bunch of ruined but really neat Monarchy era buildings that instead of being renovated were made into high quality pubs and bars keeping their run down atmosphere. They are usually furnished with vintage communist era stuff, and are hit with some absurd hipster aesthetic. You can find them all over the 7th district (the party area).
A bit of history: At the beginning of year 2000 some houses became totally abandoned for economic reasons. Some investors bought them to renovate or demolish them. But the owners wanted to utilize the time between the purchase and the restoration. So they rented the properties for a short period. Some renters thought that it's a good idea to make temporary bars from these houses. They didn’t want to invest in expensive furniture for that short time, so as they saw the beauty of the retro, second-hand stuff, they tried to make some kind of nice atmosphere from old chairs, tables, cars, bathtubs, etc. what they could get for free from clearances.
The outcome was extraordinary!
First they were packed with local hipsters, but soon they became very popular for tourists. This is why we made this video, to spread the word where we party every night!

Budapest Ruin Bars | Night Out In Hungary
Ruin bars or ruin pubs are the cornerstone of Budapest nightlife. These local spots are very unique and you should visit at least one to see what it’s like. This video tours you around seven of the city’s most popular, including the original that started the whole scene.
Ruin bars began in the early 2000s when young people in Budapest were looking for places to go out and have a drink without spending a fortune. This led to abandoned buildings and empty lots being filled with old furniture and odds and ends and turned into makeshift cheap bars. The ‘ruins’ of the surroundings is what led to the name. There are lots of ruin bars and they all have a distinct feeling that sets them apart from each other.

Sandeman Walking Tour and Pub Crawl at Ruin Bars in Budapest Hungary
1st Day in Budapest and we started right away with a Sandeman's walking tour. The tour was about 2.5 hrs and took us across the Chain Bridge over to the Buda Castle for some amazing views of the city. After the walking tour we got a quick bite to eat at Boom and Brass before we took another Sandeman's walking tour only this time it was a pub crawl through the old Jewish District. That is where there is a large concentration of bars called Ruin. The name comes from the idea that people opened a bar in a run down or abandoned building. The idea is if you build it they will come. There area is laced with bar after bar and is a popular spot for young locals.
We sampled many different liquor and beers from Hungary including Palinka. Unfortunately we drank too much and called it a night after our 5 Ruin Bar. Luckily our AirBnB was in the Jewish District so the walk wasn't very far at all.
