Amazing Sailfish in Puerto Escondido, Mexico
Renowned for it's massive Pipeline size waves, Puerto Escondido in Mexico's south west is also home to some great fishing. Sailfish, marlin, mahi mahi, trevally and mackerel are plentiful in these waters, along with massive schools of spinner dolphins. In 2015 I spent a few months in this amazing part of the world filming my adventures as well as some great fishing. My fishing week in Puerto Escondido in August 2017. Like last year I had a wonderful week of fishing, surrounded by beautiful nature and in perfect companionship of Casa Blanquís, fishing guide and companion Georges and captain Levi and Jordi of SurfandFishingCharters. The roosterfish and cubera snappers were not around this week, but that was more than compensated by hard fighting tuna, sailfish and so many opportunities to practice varied fishing styles!!

Puerto Escondido - Retro 44
Along the Pacific coast, Barra de Navidad and Puerto Escondido would be strong contenders as top choices among MEXICO: 23 Destinations to Spend the Winter Months.
The weather is superb at this time of year (winter months) and the physical beauty of both destinations is remarkable. I devoted 3 blogs to Barra de Navidad and one for nearby Melaque. That speaks for itself as to how we felt about the place.
For Puerto Escondido, I hope to keep it to one blog.
Puerto Escondido is no. 16 out of 23 destinations and I must confess that I am getting a touch of writer's fatigue. However, the last blog on Acapulco shows anything but writer's fatigue. If anything, it may suffer from a bit of verbal diarrhea.
It was the construction of coastal highway 200 in the 1960's that opened up this once isolated part of the Pacific Coast to surfers and the hippie community.
Why surfers? It is because Zicatela Beach has the best surfing in Mexico. I wrote about world-class surfing on the north coast of Oahu (Hawaii). It was there that I was introduced to the pipeline concept in surfing. Zicatela is known as the Mexican pipeline which speaks for itself.
Puerto Escondido's development has since gone well beyond its original fishing village and surfer roots, as the beauty of this destination did not stay hidden for long. Word spread about Puerto Escondido (Hidden Port) and tourism has continued to grow.

Two days in Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca. It was more of a chill day from all the traveling so we just went to the beach and ate food and enjoyed the sunset.

This is how the fishing boats come into 'port' each morning here in Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca. The captain manages to coordinate lifting the engine with the small swell, a few men, the speed of the boat, and some sticks. If all goes well (and it always does), the boat is perfectly placed high up on the dry sand where it rests safely for the night. Awesome to watch
