Australia’s Puffing Billy Railway 2019 – Part 1 – Belgrave to Lakeside
No visit to Melbourne, Australia would be complete without taking a trip through the Dandenong Ranges aboard a beautifully restored railway carriage hauled by a Puffing Billy steam locomotive. The line can be reached by a direct train from Melbourne to Belgrave station, just a short walk from the Puffing Billy station.
Billed as Australia’s premiere tourist railway, the Puffing Billy is a 2 ft 6 in (762 mm) narrow gauge heritage railway located in the Dandenong Ranges near Melbourne. The railway was originally one of five narrow gauge lines opened by Victorian Railways around the beginning of the 20th century.
Most trains start from Belgrave and travel to Lakeside, or the terminus at Gembrook, passing through the Wright State Forest, composed mainly of Tree Ferns, Mountain Grey Gum and other Eucalypt Trees. Please join me for a trip along this unique railway to see for yourself the amazing locomotives, scenery and wildlife.

I would like to express my special thanks to Puffin Pete for treating my sister and I to a trip along the line with ample opportunities for photography and a look inside the signal box at Menzies Creek. I would also like to thank Jeff Evans for his hospitality, driving us to a number of locations including Lakeside to photograph and watch trains making their leisurely way between stations.
We also owe the friendly staff and volunteers a massive thank-you for making this a very special visit, with their warm welcome and help in capturing this memorable railway on film.

Australian Steam Trains: Puffing Billy Railway Belgrave to Menzies Creek 50th Anniversary
Puffing Billy - Forward View - The Complete Route - Gembrook to Belgrave (Australia)
The surprising success of the recently posted Driver’s Eye View video using video footage taken
from the front of the engine prompted me to consider posting the footage taken by a camera fixed just above rail level. For those who have already seen the 4 Part series of videos covering Puffing Billy, you may recognize some of the shots used in those videos, repeated in this one.
This video covers the whole line from Gembrook to Belgrave, although just before Monbulk Creek Trestle the view switches to a camera mounted on the locomotive hand rail due to the batteries in the track level camera running out of power.
The view is unusual, giving a totally different prospective of the route as we leave the pleasant suburbs of Gembrook, passing into open countryside before plunging into the eucalyptus trees of the Wright Forest, our train crosses wooden trestles bridges and passing pretty wayside stations along the way.

Australia’s Puffing Billy Railway 2019 - Part 4 – Lakeside to Belgrave
In the last of this series taking passengers on a return trip between Lakeside and Belgrave we enjoy more unusual views from the locomotive, passenger seat and line-side, including a selection of different views showing various trains on the famous fifteen span Monbulk Creek wooden trestle bridge carrying the railway over both the Creek and Belgrave - Gembrook road.
Once again I am grateful to Puffin Pete, Jeff Evans and the locomotive crew for their help in making this video possible.
Special thanks to Peter Stowell for allowing me to reproduce three photos showing G42 Garratt and NA Class N8 locomotives double heading a train across Monbulk Trestle Bridge.

Puffing Billy Railway Part 1 - Belgrave to Selby
Ride aboard and upfront on the Puffing Billy Steam Locomotive as it departs Belgrave as it climbs its way up through the Dandenong Ranges to Lakeside.
The Puffing Billy Railway is a narrow gauge 2 ft 6 in (762 mm) gauge heritage railway in the Dandenong Ranges near Melbourne, Australia.
It runs through the southern foothills of the Dandenong Ranges to Gembrook. Being close to the city of Melbourne and with a post-preservation history spanning over 50 years, the line is one of the most popular steam heritage railways in the world,[1] and attracts tourists from all over Australia and overseas.
The line was opened in 1900 to serve the local farming and timber community. It originally ran from Upper Ferntree Gully station, the terminus of the broad gauge line from Melbourne and now part of Melbourne's suburban railway system, but it now begins at Belgrave.
The train, known to the locals as Puffing Billy amongst other names, stopped running in 1953 after a landslide blocked the line between Selby and Menzies Creek, and it was formally closed in 1954.[2]
On 1 October 1955, the Puffing Billy Preservation Society was formed to keep the train running indefinitely. This continued until 1958 when the line to Belgrave was closed for conversion to a broad-gauge, electrified suburban line. The society then started work on restoring the Belgrave to Lakeside section, and on 28 July 1962, restored train operation between Belgrave and Menzies Creek.
Subsequently operations were gradually extended over the remainder of the original line to Emerald in 1965 and Lakeside in 1975 before reaching Gembrook, which was completed in 1998, and reopened on 19 October of that year
