Immature Double-Crested Cormorant 3/31/2015

A beautiful Immature Double-Crested Cormorant was swimming in a Pennsylvanian pond on a warm May afternoon.
From the Cornell Lab of Ornithology:The gangly Double-crested Cormorant is a prehistoric-looking, matte-black fishing bird with yellow-orange facial skin. Though they look like a combination of a goose and a loon, they are relatives of frigatebirds and boobies and are a common sight around fresh and salt water across North America—perhaps attracting the most attention when they stand on docks, rocky islands, and channel markers, their wings spread out to dry. These solid, heavy-boned birds are experts at diving to catch small fish.

This juvenile Cormorant was on the steps in the harbour of Padstow, Cornwall UK. It appeared untroubled by us getting quite close to film it.
Cormorants are members of the pelican family, they are expert swimmers and can dive up to 100 feet deep to catch fish. Interestingly they can stay underwater for more than one minute.
