Pukara Ruins - Puno
Pukara is a quiet pueblo of a few thousand residents. The Plaza de Armas contains a beautiful colonial church containing a large mural of the Jatun Ñak'aq, El Gran Degollador (or Decapitator), with a typical Pucará ceramic bull. The Museo Lítico de Pukara is located just off the Plaza de Armas, on the road that leads to the archaeological site. Small restaurants, stores, and an artesanía shop are located just off of the Plaza.
Pukara is famous for it's ceramic production, a tradition dating back at least 2500 years. The most famous of it's ceramic figurines are the Pucará bulls or toritos; which can be found found throughout the altiplano on the roofs of houses to bring luck and fertility. Even though it is said that Pukara is where the tradition of torito production began; the real source of the the torito production is in the community of Checa Pupuja in the district of Santiago de Pupuja.

The complex contains several rooms, inner plazas, aqueducts, vantage points, and pathways. It might have served as a tambo or rest and lodging area. According to the tale, each time the Inca was able to go to Tambomachay, he would be accompanied by a large cortège, which stayed at Pukapukara. It is also called a fort because of its fortified-city appearance.

The archaeological site of Tambomachay - Cusco, Peru
Not far from Puca Pucara, on the road from #Cusco to the #SacredValley, Tambomachay combines intricate stonework with the Incas devotion to water.
Known as the Baths of the Incas, a number of aqueducts and channels run through the site. But the focal point is a string of carefully designed #waterfalls, which split spring water into a series of cascades that fall in such a precise and delicate manner that its believed they were built as part of a water cult.
The trapezoidal niches on the high terrace and off to the side of the waterfall are among the most highly crafted stone constructions left by the #Incas.
The precision of the falls is matched by a similar water feature at Ollantaytambo, but the Incas also showed great control over water for more practical purposes.
Their use of stone irrigation channels to feed agricultural terraces around Cusco and the Sacred Valley allowed them to grow abundant crops at high altitudes, something previous Andean cultures never achieved.

Puca Pucara - Inca ruins located near Cusco City
Pucapucara on the road from #Cusco to the #SacredValley is often called the Red Fort.
But its more likely it was a customs house for traders entering the imperial capital.
From the valley below it presents a sheer stonewall, but from road on the other side it appears to be a more open building with few defenses.
The walls include examples of the Incas distinctive trapezoidal niches also found at #MachuPicchu.
The building includes a number of rectangular structures that were most likely warehouses.
It also includes channels that fed running water throughout the complex.

The Outposts of Sacsayhuaman Series is in the overall, a view of the region of the Sacred Valley not presented with just the Inca in Mind. Who was here before the Inca and left us a mystery. Not only has the sites in the Kingdom of Sacsayhuaman risen hundreds if not,,, thousands of feet in elevation. But also from the separation of the original land mass that places in the Outpost Series present, as we see around the planet.
