This park is absolutely stunning.
Pukaskwa National Park is a national park located south of the town of Marathon, Ontario in the Thunder Bay District of northern Ontario, Canada. Established in 1978, Pukaskwa is known for its vistas of Lake Superior and boreal forests. The park covers an area of 1,878 square kilometres (725 sq mi), and protects part of the longest undeveloped shoreline anywhere on the Great Lakes.
The Hattie Cove Campground is located at the north end of the park and can be accessed via Highway 627, the only road access into the park. There are also a number of backcountry campsites located along the 60km Coastal Hiking Trail which follows the north shore of Lake Superior. The Coastal Hiking Trail has two suspension bridges; one across the White River at Chigaamiwinigum and one across the Willow River. The Coastal Hiking Trail is part of the long-distance Voyageur Hiking Trail. Backcountry campsites are also located along the Coastal Paddling Route, the White River, and the Pukaskwa River.
Black bears, moose, Canadian Lynx and grey wolves are found in the park. There is also a small population of Woodland caribou but their numbers declined from 30 caribou in the 1970s to about four in 2012 mainly due to wolf predation.[1][2]

Woah, Nice Dave
Take your Time,
We're good to go
My favourite part of the Pukaskwa Hike, would have to be any of the coastal sections
I think that was really, I can't really define it into one section, but I really enjoyed scrambling over the boulders, taking in those beautiful views of Lake Superior.
And also, the challenge of it as well, you know it's a challenge to sort of navigate all these slick boulders, with a pack on.
So the challenge, combined with the beautiful views, and the stunning landscape really made it the perfect thing for me.
Hiking the Pukaskwa Coastal Trail, here in Canada, is one of the top experiences of Trekking, that Dave and I have ever had.
It was really fun being with our guide Brenden. He really took care of us. He just made it easier and a lot more fun. He was always keeping us really occupied during the day, you could tell that he could feel when our energy was getting low.
So we'd start playing games with us, and stuff to keep our mind off of the pain in our feet.
And it was just a really good time to really see what you're made of and the challenges of being out there, not showering for 7 days, sleeping in the rain, and putting up your tent and carrying your pack.
It's really one of the toughest things that I've done but also the most rewarding.
And honestly, one of the best times I've had out in nature.
I don't know if this is foot therapy or foot torture.
Favourite part of the Pukaskwa Trail, would probably have to be each night when we'd get to camp, finish making dinner, cleaning everything up.
We'd have half an hour to an hour we were pretty early to bed.
Of just sitting there whether it was taking some pictures of the sunset, or just kind of relaxing, winding down for the night.
I really enjoyed that time with the exception of one night, every night was a beautiful evening.
That was definitely my favourite section.
I had a few favourite parts of the Pukaskwa Coastal Trail.
I really enjoyed, walking inland through the forest, I loved the mossy section, I loved the trails, but I also really loved going on the coastal trail and being really high on the cliffs, and overlooking Lake Superior.
It was pretty spectacular.
Yeah
Well, we had to sign into the guest book that we were here.

We made it, we did it!
So if you get a chance to hike the Pukaskwa Trail here in Ontario Canada, do it!
Might be a bit of a rough boat ride today.

Pukaskwa National Park Camping and Hiking // Road Trip 2019
Pukaskwa National Park was a really great place to explore. It was a warm day, and with the cool breeze off of Lake Superior, the weather was perfect. The park was nearly empty, which meant we got to take out time and really enjoy the peaceful, quiet surroundings all by ourselves. There's certainly more to see than the two trails we conquered, but we will leave those parts for your own exploration!
We always had an incredible time camping at the nearby town of Marathon Ontario. We found a quiet spot called Pebble Beach, where we got to meet some other road trippers and enjoy a beautiful sunset. All in all, Pukaskwa and Marathon both were 5 star road trip locations. Add them to your list!!

Paddling Pukaskwa National Park, Lake Superior
This wild and remote stretch of Lake Superior coastline had been on our paddling destination bucket list for some time. We had considered exploring this section of the lake in the past but weren’t quite able to work out the logistics. We wouldn’t have adequate time to properly paddle the whole coast (180+kms) from its northern border (Hattie Cove) to southern (Pukaskwa River) leaving the park turning east along crown land (Superior Highlands) to the mouth of the Michipicoten River (Wawa Ontario). There simply wasn’t enough time to do it all in one trip and the issue of effectively shuttling our vehicle 196kms from Hattie to Wawa. We also weren’t satisfied with the idea of just paddling out of Hattie Cove for 3 days and then turning back. Many paddlers have raced through the full route but we wanted to hug the land exploring as much of the coast as possible. We came to the conclusion that the route would be split in half. With that being said the trip sat idle for the past couple years. Over the winter I stumbled upon Taylor Angers of True North Charters (out of Marathon Ont). We chatted online, and he answered all the questions I could toss at him. We worked on a rough plan, and sat on it over the next couple winter months. In the Spring we touched base once again and decided that he would provide us a water taxi from Marathon Ontario to the Park’s Southern border allowing us to utilize our full seven days vacation.
The route from Windsor Ontario to Marathon Ontario is easily a 10hr plus drive cutting through Michigan at Detroit, and crossing back at Sault St. Marie Ontario. The road trip is quite beautiful, but personally it was a little overwhelming. I had just completed the same route two days earlier with my wife and kids (trailer in tow) as we camped at Neys Provincial Park, Pukaskwa NP and Pancake Bay PP along Superior’s North Shore. As tiring as the thought of hitting the road again so soon weighed on me, we set off and I was quickly filled with the energy of the open road and the upcoming adventure. We left at noon with blue skies and little to no traffic. The ride was relaxing and uneventful until arriving in Wawa. We ran into David Wells (owner of Naturally Superior Adventures) while filling up at a gas station, which we thought might be a sign of good luck. He had personally shuttled our car two years earlier when paddling the coast of Lake Superior Provincial Park. The light started to fade as we headed towards White River, and that’s when the sky started to flash with impressive streaks of lightening. We both looked at each other and laughed as the rain began to come down hard. Our laughter quickly turned to swearing, and 3 hours of white knuckle driving. Torrential downpours, semi-trucks, thick fog, ponding water, hills/curves, and kilometres of (moose) night danger signs made for an interesting end to our night. Taylor told us we could sleep at the campground in Marathon, but at this point we decided we’d just grab a motel in town. We pulled into Marathon around midnight. All the motels along the highway were full, likely due to the intense storm, so we thought we were lucky to find a room at the Zero-100 Motor Inn. Now that’s a funny story for another time. We ended up with maybe two hours of sleep before setting off to meet Taylor at 8am to load the boats. Taylor was incredibly friendly, knowledgeable, professional and genuinely excited for us to head off on our adventure. With the boats and gear loaded we set off to meet with Park staff for a mandatory trip meeting.
