'Creature' installation at Puke Ariki, New Plymouth
kiwiprefab.co.nz
Commissioned by Victoria University and Puke Ariki especially for the Kiwi Prefab: Cottage to Cutting Edge exhibition, the 'Creature' installation explores how computer-aided design and manufacture can enable complex shapes to be simply and economically made, assembled, and disassembled.
By Mark Southcombe, Victoria University of Wellington Senior Lecturer in Architecture, with research assistance and design collaboration from Xuanyi Nie and Jeremy Robinson. Core-flute, nylon zip ties.
Design developed using analogue design and Grasshopper generative modelling software; materials pre-cut by computer numerically controlled (CNC) router; prefabricated in sections and fabricated on site.
On loan from Victoria University Wellington Architecture School.

Kiwi Prefab is presented in partnership with Victoria University of Wellington, New Plymouth District Council, Taranaki Regional Council, TSB Community Trust, Radio Network, Resene and Nova Energy.

Puke Ariki, New Plymouth
Puke Ariki faced all the complex issues of an ambitious and challenging civic project, including: tight budgets, building re-use, strategic planning and vision, iwi contribution, associated public spaces, and future proofing. It also had to achieve a link from the sea to the CBD and the urban interface.
The resulting design drapes a new building across the land towards the sea, rising out of the ground in the manner of the original paa Puke Ariki - Hill of Chiefs - and joined to the existing building by an aerial bridge across the street. Construction materials and systems are simple, robust and industrial - steel, metal, concrete, glass and single-skin Equibond cladding - and the expressed, raw structure of both buildings and their services is derived from the cost-driven design philosophy established at the outset.

???? QUI SUIS-JE ? - WHO I AM ?
My name is Julien Calabro, I was born in the south of France and I strarted to travel around Europe with my family when I was 12 years old. I enjoyed it so much my only thoughts were about travel. At 21 I moved to Paris where I lived by myself for about 5 years. During that time, the pace of my travels has very rapidly increased. I have been to New York, and Canada, then for the first time in Asia in 2012. I also went to Morocco in Africa in 2014. After all these trips my life has been changed a lot and I feeled depressed when I was working in France. At 27 years old I took a radical decision and left my job, my flat and then, my country... I moved to Sydney in Australia for about 2 years, and then now, in Auckland, the biggest city of New Zealand. I don't know what I will do and where I will be tomorrow, but I love my random life around the world.

Tomorrow – Day 45 –
About this video:
Today’s activity on New Zealand’s Biggest Gap Year is the Puke Ariki Museum in Taranaki! The Puke Ariki Museum is in the centre of New Plymouth and the perfect rainy day activity in Taranaki.
The Puke Ariki Museum is full of exhibitions from Maori history to natural history and beyond. We spend way too much time in the kid’s exhibition playing on slides and playing on the interactive displays...
After spending a huge amount of time in the free Puke Ariki Museum in Taranki, we head back to our accommodation at the Ducks & Drakes Backpackers where we hear there is a gallery event happening at a barber shop in New Plymouth tonight called the Gallery at Jetcharm. It’s a small pop-up gallery that runs monthly events where a theme is chosen and people can submit their work to be on display on the gallery and put up for sale. It’s a great way for us to meet some creative locals in New Plymouth, Taranaki.
So what do you think of the Puke Ariki Museum in Taranaki? And how about the Gallery at Jetcharm? Let us know in the comments below!

90° Doors! Slow OTIS Hydraulic Lift/Elevator @ Puke Ariki, New Plymouth, NZ
90° Doors! This is the Slow OTIS Hydraulic Lift/Elevator at Puke Ariki in New Plymouth, New Zealand. This lift is fairly beaten up and is too slow. The 90° Doors are nice and the pre-doors slightly make up for how slow the lift goes. The startup when going up is pretty harsh. The indicator is slightly messed up. The buttons and indicator are from installation as this was installed in the late 90's.

মজার সময় কাটলো মিউজিয়ামে- spent great time in the Puke Ariki Museum
Puke Ariki is a combined museum and library at New Plymouth, New Zealand which opened in June 2003. It is an amalgamation of the New Plymouth Public Library and the Taranaki Museum. Its name, Māori for hill of chiefs, is taken from the Māori village that formerly occupied the site.
The founding museum collections donated by William Skinner were well-documented Māori taonga (treasures), including a rare dogskin cloak (huruhuru kurī). Skinner was a Taranaki surveyor, and later Commissioner of Crown Lands in Blenheim, so had travelled extensively and was well-known to local (source:
