Auckland Branch YHANZ 60th anniversary 1953-2013: Twenty years ago, in Oct 1993, we spent Labour weekend at New Plymouth. Highlights included Pukekura Park, Pukeiti Rhododendron Gardens, Cape Egmont, Dawson Falls, and Lake Mangamahoe with its views of Mt Taranaki.

City Description:
New Plymouth is a city on the west coast of New Zealand’s North Island. It’s known for its coastal walkway stretching from Bell Block to Port Taranaki. Te Rewa Rewa Bridge has views of towering Mount Taranaki. The Govett-Brewster Art Gallery shows contemporary exhibitions. Close by, Pukekura Park has botanical gardens and birdlife. Subalpine forests and waterfalls characterise Egmont National Park to the south.The Puke Ariki is a library and museum space highlighting Taranaki history and Maori artefacts. Close by is Richmond Cottage, an 1850s homestead with native gardens and displays on the pioneering colonial Atkinson and Richmond families. To the south of town, the Pukeiti Rhododendron Trust has rhododendrons and azaleas in a rainforest. Nearby, the TSB Bank Bowls New Zealand Museum has a vast lawn-bowling collection with thousands of items detailing the history of the sport.
Weather and Events:
New Plymouth has a wet, temperate climate with mild summers (Dec–Feb) and cool winters (Jun–Aug). Peak visiting times are Dec–Jan and Mar–Apr. Popular regional events include the TSB Bank Festival of Lights (Dec–Feb), with light displays in Pukekura Park.

We are in New Plymouth, Taranaki in the beautiful Ducks & Drakes Backpackers ready for another Taranaki activity today! We head to the other side of New Plymouth city to a place called Paritutu Rock.
It’s a short but super steep climb up Paritutu Rock in New Plymouth which rewards with views of the Sugar Loaf Island, which we kayaked to the other day , the city of New Plymouth and Mt Taranaki. We also notice a gorgeous beach below Paritutu Rock so we make that our next stop.
We walk down to Back Beach in New Plymouth to have some lunch, run down sand dunes and stroll along the beach.

This country garden, set sensitively within its wider environment, includes the adjacent 400 year old Puketarata Pa. Making the most of its mountain and landscape views, incorporating skilled blending of native plants with exotic varieties. Generous herbaceous plantings provide flowers, colour and scent. Walking tracks are in the gully below. Bus groups can be collected from the road by arrangement.
