Pūkorokoro Miranda Shorebird Centre in New Zealand - a heaven for shorebirds on migration
A short video I made from footage taken at Pūkorokoro Miranda Shorebird Centre on a recent visit with useful information for travelers, bird watchers and kids.
Have a look at their website ( for more information. It's a must for any keen birders passing through the area and so close to Auckland.

Wrybill - Miranda, New Zealand
A short series of video clips and images of the indigenous Wrybill Anarhynchus frontalis of New Zealand seen on a windy wet day at Miranda in the North Island.
There is one very blurry clip I kept in because of the sound of the Skylarks.
The Wrybill is endemic to the islands and is the only wader/shorebird with a a bill that turns to the side at the end.

Miranda Shorebirds
Every summer, at the tiny settlement of Miranda in the Firth of Thames, a natural spectacle takes place. Thousands of birds, from all around the globe, flock here to feast at the mudflats and rest after their incredible journeys. Meet the Locals is a partnership between DOC and TVNZ 6 and is distributed by Bush Telly with permission.

Waders roosting at Pukorokoro Miranda New Zealand
High tide on Saturday 14th January saw the birds roosting on the Stilt Ponds. The light was great for photos and for reading the flags on the godwits.

New Zealand Birds: Bar-tailed Godwit flock zooming in Miranda 15 Nov 2013
What the godwit is telling us - Part 1 (ENG subtitled)
Part 1.
Almost everywhere in Western Europe the migration birds have difficult times, under the pressure of the intensive agriculture. The godwits are one of the most important migration birds in the province of Friesland in the north of Holland. Their number decreased fast. This bird is therefore considered as the messenger of impoverishment of the countryside, of the dramatic loss of diversity in Friesland.
Sytze Pruiksma and Theunis Piersma are telling everywhere the story of the godwits. A musician and a biologist.
They travel along the migrations routes of the godwits. To Africa and now Spain and Portugal. They count the birds, and put transmitters on their back and follow them by satellite.
Sytze and Theunis participate also in a civil movement that strives for a less industrial agriculture. That movement is called Kind of The Meadows and is now part of the program of The European capital of Culture in Friesland by 2018.
In this documentary they are followed to Spain and Portugal, where they spread the message of the godwits.
