Music Session at Pukou Park 浦口公园, Nanjing, China
One Sunday morning I got on the ferry and crossed the Yangzi River to the other side of Nanjing. The scenery was like going back in time 40-50 years. So was the music (standards from the good old days of the Revolution!) After wandering around for a while I arrived in this park and started playing with these guys, quietly, on the mandolin. After a few hours, I began to get a rudimentary sense of the typical keys and intervals. The video gives you a nice shot of the bowing technique of the erhu (2-string fiddle) by two masters. The singer also plays a fine erhu. I left after 4 hours of playing, and they were still going strong. Thanks all!

Trip to Nanking, February-March, 1929
This film is part of a collection of motion picture films that John Van Antwerp MacMurray shot during the time he served as American Minister to China (1925-1929).
After a brief train scene, the footage of this film is shot aboard a boat, possibly across the Yangzi River between the train station at Pukou and Nanking. This is followed by shots of the new mausoleum for Sun Yat-sen, awaiting Sun's re-internment on June 1, 1929. The film ends with brief footage of a train being guarded by a soldier, followed by men who are carrying luggage and people holding banners.
This film is discussed in The Reel Mudd, the audiovisual blog of the Seeley G. Mudd Manuscript Library, which holds the John Van Antwerp MacMurray Papers. For more information or to comment on the film see .

Nanjing
Nanjing ( listen; Chinese: 南京; pinyin: Nánjīng; Wade–Giles: Nan-ching) is the capital of Jiangsu province in Eastern China. It has a prominent place in Chinese history and culture, having been the capital of China for several periods. Its present name means Southern Capital and was widely romanized as Nankin and Nanking until the pinyin language reform, after which Nanjing was gradually adopted as the standard spelling of the city's name in most languages that use the Roman alphabet.
Located in the lower Yangtze River drainage basin and Yangtze River Delta economic zone, Nanjing has long been one of China's most important cities. Having been the capital city of six different dynasties since 3 A.D., it is recognized as one of the Four Great Ancient Capitals of China. It was the capital of Wu during the Three Kingdoms Period, and the capital of the Republic of China prior to its flight to Taiwan during the Chinese Civil War. Nanjing is also one of the fifteen sub-provincial cities in the People's Republic of China's administrative structure, enjoying jurisdictional and economic autonomy only slightly less than that of a province. Nanjing has long been a national centre of education, research, transport networks and tourism. The city will host the 2014 Summer Youth Olympics.

Moving relics of the Palace Museum during wartime
When the Japanese Kanto Army instigated the September 18 incident, both the ROC Government and the Palace Museum were concerned with the safety of museum relics, so they planned to move them to Southern China. In 1933, a total of 19,621 cases and 72 bags of ancient Chinese relics were loaded onto relic trains at the West Train Station in Beiping, and first transported along the Ping-Han, Lun-Hai and Jin-Pu railroads to Pukou, Nanjing, then they were shipped by boat to Shanghai International Settlement along the Yangtze River. In December 1936, the relics were moved to the warehouse of Nanjing Chaotian Temple. As the Japanese advanced from Beiping southwards, the relics were transported westward via three routes. The South Route was by truck to Anshun, Guizhou Province via Changsha and Guilin. The North Route was by railroad to Baoji, Shaanxi Province, and then by truck along the Sichuan-Shaanxi Highway to Emei, via Hanzhong and Chengdu. The Middle Route was by ship, upstream along the Yangtze River, to Leshan, Ba County, via Yichang, Chungking and Yibin. This process was full of difficulties and danger, and very bumpy all along the way.A few days after departure, the original place of storage was bombed by Japanese bombers. In 1944, the ROC Government was at risk of defeat along the South Western frontlines, so, after the Palace Museum held an emergency meeting, the relics stored in Anshun were moved to Sichuan Province. After victory of the War of Resistance Against Japan, the relics were first gathered together near Chungking, and then transported back to Nanjing Chaotian Temple, mainly by ship, but some by truck.Soon afterwards, the civil war broke out between the Nationalists and the Communists, and the relics were in jeopardy again.Members of the Executive Committee of the Museum, held an emergency meeting to discuss the evacuation of relics, and decided to move selected exquisite items to Taiwan.5,522 cases of ancient Chinese relics were shipped, in three batches, from Nanjing to Keelung, and stored in the warehouse of Taichung Sugar Factory. In 1950, the relics were moved to Beigou warehouse in Wufeng, where they were stored for more than ten years.During the 8- year War of Resistance Against Japan and the following Chinese Civil War, people from all fields of our country cooperated in moving our national treasure around, so that they were preserved, and now they continue to tell our country’s long history.

SUMMARY

Tianjin ([tʰjɛ́n.tɕín] (listen)), formerly romanized as Tientsin, is a coastal metropolis in northern China and one of the nine national central cities of the People's Republic of China (PRC), with a total population of 15,469,500, and is also the world's 11th-most populous city proper. It is governed as one of the four municipalities under the direct administration of central government of the PRC and is thus under direct administration of the central government. Tianjin borders Hebei Province and Beijing Municipality, bounded to the east by the Bohai Gulf portion of the Yellow Sea. Part of the Bohai Economic Rim, it is the largest coastal city in northern China.
In terms of urban population, Tianjin is the fourth largest in China, after Shanghai, Beijing, and Guangzhou. In terms of administrative area population, Tianjin ranks fifth in Mainland China. The walled city of Tianjin was built in 1404. As a treaty port since 1860, Tianjin has been a major seaport and gateway to Beijing. During the Boxer Rebellion the city was the seat of the Tianjin Provisional Government. Under the Qing dynasty and the Republic of China, Tianjin became one of the largest cities in the region. At that time, numerous European-style buildings and mansions were constructed in concessions, many of which are well-preserved today. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, Tianjin suffered a depression due to the policy of the central government and Tangshan earthquake, but recovered from 1990s. Nowadays Tianjin is a dual-core city, with its main urban area (including the old city) located along the Hai River, which connects to the Yellow and Yangtze Rivers via the Grand Canal; and Binhai, a New Area urban core located east of the old city, on the coast of the Bohai Gulf. As of the end of 2010, around 285 Fortune 500 companies have set up base in Binhai.

The Yangtze or Yangzi (English: or ), which is 6,300 km (3,915 mi) long, is the longest river in Asia, the third-longest in the world and the longest in the world to flow entirely within one country. Its source is in the northern part of the Tibetan Plateau and it flows 6,300 km (3,900 mi) in a generally eastern direction to the East China Sea. It is the sixth-largest river by discharge volume in the world. Its drainage basin comprises one-fifth of the land area of China, and is home to nearly one-third of the country's population. The Yangtze has played a major role in the history, culture and economy of China. For thousands of years, the river has been used for water, irrigation, sanitation, transportation, industry, boundary-marking and war. The prosperous Yangtze River Delta generates as much as 20% of the PRC's GDP. The Three Gorges Dam on the Yangtze is the largest hydro-electric power station in the world. In mid-2014, the Chinese government announced it was building a multi-tier transport network, comprising railways, roads and airports, to create a new economic belt alongside the river. The Yangtze flows through a wide array of ecosystems and is habitat to several endemic and endangered species including the Chinese alligator, the narrow-ridged finless porpoise, the Chinese paddlefish, the (extinct) Yangtze River dolphin or baiji, and the Yangtze sturgeon. In recent years, the river has suffered from industrial pollution, plastic pollution, agricultural run-off, siltation, and loss of wetland and lakes, which exacerbates seasonal flooding. Some sections of the river are now protected as nature reserves. A stretch of the upstream Yangtze flowing through deep gorges in western Yunnan is part of the Three Parallel Rivers of Yunnan Protected Areas, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
