Pulau Ketam Malaysia One Day Trip: The Crab Island Fishing Village [Small Girl Big World]
In this video, follow me to Pulau Ketam Malaysia and what you can do in Pulau Ketam in a one day trip. Pulau Ketam directly translate to English as Crab Island. Pulau Ketam is situated the state of Selangor in Malaysia. If you are from Kuala Lumpur, you can take the KTM Commuter from KL Sentral Station and depart at the final stop, the Perlabuhan Klang station (aka Port Klang station). This take about 45 minutes to 1 hour journey. Just across the Perlabuhan Klang station (Port Klang station) is the terminal jetty to catch the speed boat ride to Pulau Ketam.
Speedboat ride take about 45 minutes to the Pulau Ketam fishing village jetty. There is 2 villages in Pulau Ketam Selangor; the Kampung Sungai Lima and Kampung Pulau Ketam. Speedboat will stop at Kampung Sungai Lima jetty first and then to the destination that I wanted to go. So please make sure you go down at the correct jetty.
Pulau Ketam Malaysia is an unique island. There is no road and pavement connecting the fishing villages. There is no cars on the island and the main transportation is electric bike, bicycle and boat.
The current population of Pulau Ketam is merely 6000, a far cry from its peak during the 1980s that reached approximate 20000 people. Most of the population has migrated to other island and many to city for better job opportunities. Most of the population in Pulau Ketam are fisherman. Even with such small population, the villages do have police station, pos office, schools, fire brigade, community hall, library and hotels for tourist.
Pulau Ketam is a chinese fishing villages. Most of the chinese here are descendant of Teochew and Hokkien chinese came here many years ago. Chinese custom and tradition is still strongly adhered. Every year during God's birthday, there will be activities, opera and celebration. In this trip, I am thrill that I am able to observe a live chinese opera even though it is just a rehearsal.
Going to the sea for fishing is dangerous. Weather, wind and wave all play factor to their catch and safety. It is customary for the fisherman to pray at temples for their safety and big catch. Therefore, walking around the Pulau Ketam fishing village, I can see a lot of Chinese temple.
Crab Island Malaysia also famous for its seafood. How can you not try the fresh and tasty Pulau Ketam seafood? Seafood restaurant is everywhere once you disembark from the boat. I tried dried chilli crab and fried oyster. If you have more people, you can order more variety of other Pulau Ketam seafood.

Pulau Ketam, The Crab Island
Pulau Ketam is a small island off the coast of Klang. The name Pulau Ketam translated literally from Malay means Crab Island. Easily accessible through the Port Klang jetty by ferry, Pulau Ketam is a charming village famous for its floating houses—wooden houses perched on long wooden stilts that, during a high tide, give the illusion that it is floating on water. It is a perfect place for anybody looking to escape the hustle and bustle of city life.
The history of Pulau Ketam began almost a hundred years ago, when Pulau Ketam was simply an abandoned island frequented by fishermen looking for crabs. The fishermen built houses to take shelter in during their trips to the island, eventually deciding to stay there permanently. The population steadily grew and experienced a sudden burst during the Japanese occupation where refugees escaped to the peaceful island.

Pulau Ketam, literally translated, means Crab Island. It is a small island located off the coast of Port Klang, Selangor, Malaysia, and was founded circa 1880. The island is easily accessible from the Port Klang jetty by ferry. The floating houses that come to view as visitors approach the island are a sight to awe any city slickers. Perching casually on long wooden stilts, these dwellings are suspended about one to ten (1-10) metre above sea level. The main thoroughfares are narrow concreted pavements, whilst in the residential areas, the older rickety wooden plank bridges can still be seen. There are no cars in Pulau Ketam, only bicycles, some of which are motorised.
Over twenty years ago, Pulau Ketam was a marsh land that was devoid of habitation. Some Chinese immigrants landed on the stave and decided to call essential down home. The nickname ' Ketam ' literally means crab. It is derived from the shape of the island that bears the resemblance of this crustacean if viewed from a certain position.
Pulau Ketam is equipped with almost all the basic facilities. It also plays a role as a major fish, crabs, prawns provider to Klang valley and a tourism spot of Negeri Selangor. Ferry services are available everyday. The journey takes will take about 30 minutes. Beside ferry, speedboat is also available 24 hours per day on call. If you have cargoes to deliver, cargo boats are available too.
The simplest way to get to Pulau Ketam is by a commuter train from KL Sentral Station in Kuala Lumpur all the way to Port Klang. At the last station, alight and hop on a ferry at the nearby jetty, paying about RM5 for a one-way ticket. These ferries are shaped like long bananas, and are actually retired boats from Borneo that were used to ply the river routes in Sarawak. Pulau Ketam is the best opportunity for visitors to witness and experience the unique lifestyle of fishermen. Homestay facilities are readily available. And, Pulau Ketam also having a very special viewpoint with town city where this island escape from air polutions, traffic jams, finding car parking problem etc.
The locals are mainly Teochew and Hoklo (Hokkien) Chinese, with Teochew, Hokkien and Mandarin Chinese the main dialects spoken.

Pulau Ketam Selangor 2018 - Crab Island
Pulau Ketam is an island off the coast of Port Klang. It takes about 30-45 minutes by ferry from Port Klang Jetty to reach the main village. Pulau Ketam is an island mostly inhabited by the Chinese from the clans of Teochew and Hokkien. There are about 6,000 villagers and over 1,000 houses on this fishing village. It was discovered and inhabited more than a century ago. These days, most of the population that stay here are the elderly people and younger children.
Most of the children leave home after completing their secondary education to pursue their studies at the mainland or overseas. Most do not return to settle down due to lack of suitable jobs and infrastructure.
Though not as attractive as the other islands of Malaysia, this island is still a popular destination for family outings especially during the weekends and public holidays.

Pulau Ketam, literally translated, means Crab Island. It is a small island located off the coast of Klang, Selangor. The island is easily accessible from the Port Klang jetty by ferry - a quaint, sausage shaped vessel which is referred to as the 'airplane boat' (飞机船) for its close resemblance to the narrow body of an aircraft.
Fishery-related trade forms the main economic activity. More than 90% of islanders are of Chinese descent, the majority of whom are Hokkiens and Teochews. The laid-back pace of life, the idyllic atmosphere, the hospitable locals and abundance of reasonably priced seafood add to the charm of this jewel of an island off the western coast of peninsular Malaysia.
