Hanga Roa from Puna Pau
Puna Pau is the volcanic scoria quarry where the topknots for the Moai were made. From here there is a panoramic view of the town of Hanga Roa on Easter Island. The airport is situated at the far left end of town and in the background is Rano Kau. If you look carefully you will also see two cargo ships at anchor in the bay.

Puna a Pau, Rapa Nui, Easter Island, Chile
Puna Pau is a small extinct volcano, located about 7 kilometers northeast of Hanga Roa, whose name refers to a source or well of water that should have existed in its surroundings. This crater is part of a set of parasitic cones that emerged during the eruptions of Ma’unga Terevaka, the youngest and highest volcano on Easter Island.
Inside the Puna Pau crater there is a quarry of red scoria that was once an important source of raw material for the islanders. The red scoria or hani hani, as it is known in the Rapanui language, is a type of volcanic ash of great porosity and scarce hardness, which shows a reddish color due to the iron oxide present in its composition.
Currently, the Puna Pau crater is just a depression in the land covered with vegetation. Only a few outcrops of scoria are visible on the southern slope, where a rock wall shows several stripes of reddish material.
The current form of the small volcano is the result of the intervention of the hand of man throughout history. According to the latest excavations, during the fourteenth and seventeenth centuries an intense work of extraction was developed in the Puna Pau quarry, whose main motive was the elaboration of the pukao or cylindrical headdresses that crowned some of the statues of Easter Island.

Puna Pau on Easter Island
Puna Pau which is the topknot quarry where the red scoria was extracted, carved and transported. There are a number of abandoned topknots around the quarry and some even have petroglyphs carved into them.
Pukao are the hats or topknots formerly placed on top of some moai statues on Easter Island. They were all carved from a very light red volcanic stone scoria, which was quarried from a single source at Puna Pau.
Pukao are cylindrical in shape with a dent on the underside to fit on the head of the moai and a boss or knot on top. They fitted onto the moai in such a way that the pukao protruded forwards. Their size varies in proportion to the moai they were on but they can be up to 8 feet tall and 8 feet in diameter.
The pukao was balanced as a separate piece on top of the head of a moai. It is not known how they were raised and placed but theories include them being raised with the statue or placed after the statue was erected. Pukao may have represented dressed hair or headdresses of red feathers worn by chiefs throughout Polynesia.
To date, about 100 pukao have been documented archaeologically, but only at Ahu with fallen statues or at the source quarry

SUBSCRIBE: - Let's go the mysterious island of Easter Island in the Pacific Ocean and let's visit Puna Pau which is a quarry in a small crater or cinder cone on the outskirts of Hanga Roa in the south west of the Island.
Puna Pau was the sole source of the red scoria that the Rapa Nui people used to carve the pukao (topknots) that they put on the heads of some of their iconic moai statues. The stone from Puna Pau was also used for a few non-standard moai including Tukuturi and also for some petroglyphs.
Easter Island, a Chilean territory, is a remote volcanic island in Polynesia. Its native name is Rapa Nui. It’s famed for archaeological sites, including nearly 900 monumental statues called moai, created by inhabitants during the 13th–16th centuries. The moai are carved human figures with oversize heads, often resting on massive stone pedestals called ahus. Ahu Tongariki has the largest group of upright moai.

En Puna Pao se obtenía la escoria roja volcánica para fabricar los pukaos, sombreros o tocados que colocaban en la cabeza de algunos moai. En este enclave se conservan más de 20 pukaos algunos con inscripciones. La vista de Hanga Roa y otros lugares de la isla desde lo alto de esta colina es espectacular.

This clip is off some mates fishing the Hangaroa River upper reaches. Waimaha to be exact. After cyclone bola 1988 liberations were carried out and a particular R-strain fish was released these fish grow to exceptional sizes and occassionallly one is caught here in the upper reaches of the Hangaroa. The Hangaroa River is one of the most under utilized river in the Gisborne region and we in the GAC know this but don't broadcast it as it give us club members a peaceful lonesome fishing experience. I have seen fish in the 8 lbs (3.5 kg) market caught and it holds Rainbow and Brown trout.
