The Cook Islands is a nation in the South Pacific, with political links to New Zealand. Its 15 islands are scattered over a vast area. The largest island, Rarotonga, is home to rugged mountains and Avarua, the national capital. To the north, Aitutaki Island has a vast lagoon encircled by coral reefs and small, sandy islets. The country is renowned for its many snorkeling and scuba-diving sites.

Punanga Nui market, Rarotonga
- Saturday morning is the big day at Rarotonga's Punanga Nui market in the Cook Islands. From early in the morning until midday there are seasonal local fruits and vegetables for sale and plenty of stalls sellling cooked food. For tourists it's a great place to buy souvenirs - from pareu to pearls - and a music CD by one of our local performers will remind you of your Rarotonga holiday. If you're lucky you'll be able to catch a performance by a local dance group - they often fundraise at the market on Saturday morning so be generous!

Rarotonga, Cook Islands
Rarotonga, the capital of our friendly little corner of the Pacific, is a very small island at only 32 kms around the outer perimeter. It takes approximately 40 minutes to drive around the island by car or motor scooter, which means all services and amenities on the island are just 20 minutes from wherever you are.
There are only 16,000 of us living in the Cook Islands. 10,000 live on Rarotonga with the rest living on 12 of our 15 islands. We are Polynesian, naturally friendly and openly welcome visitors to our shores like we have been doing for the past millennium or two. Everyone speaks English as well as the native Polynesian language.
Rarotonga is the transport hub of the Cook Islands with frequent connections from New Zealand, Australia, Tahiti, North America (via Los Angeles) and South America (via Tahiti or Auckland).
