Punnathurkotta is a fort and former palace located in Kottapadi, about 2 km from the Guruvayoor Sree Krishna Temple, in Thrissur District of Kerala State in South India. Punnathurkotta Is also called ANAKOTTA (Elephant Fort). 60 to 85 elephants kept in a 10 acre plot of coconut groves of Anakotta. Anakotta premises as well as the animals are owned by Guruvayur temple.People started calling it Anakotta (also Anakkotta) which means elephant fort. There is also a small temple in the premises. The deities there are Lord Shiva and Bhagavathi. Elephants, although usually loosely tied to a concrete stump with chain, are always active.Some can be seen eating palm leaves or playing with it while some others may be playing with mud. You may also see them taken for a bath in the nearby pond. Besides attending their duties related to Guruvayur temple, elephants also participate in festivals of other temples.

The Elephant Camp is located in Punnathur Kotta, at a distance of 3 km from the Guruvayur Temple.This Elephant Camp houses 58 elephants in 11.5 acres of land and is famous for housing the largest numbers of elephants in the smallest acreage of land. ( As per the regulations of the Central Zoo Authority of India, one elephant in captivity must have a minimum of 1.25 acres of land as
holding area and this is in direct violation of the CZA norms, the Project Elephant Guidelines, and the conditions under which ownership has been granted under the Wildlife Protection Act 1972).A serious violation of all the rules and laws are the shelters provided - this facility has 8 sheds for the 50 odd elephants housed here. Thus most of them are exposed completely to the elements all year round, standing in their own faeces, urine and food waste. The other glaring violation is the lack of running water in the facility, with just 3 algae filled tanks and drinking water provided
from water hoses.The 'fascinating' feature is that all the elephants are 'offerings' that are made (donated) by the devotees, (degrading them to the level of commodities), to the temple, ignoring the fact that these animals are sentient beings. The camp also acts as a training school for the elephants. All the bull (male) elephants here are trained to participate in major processions and daily temple rituals.
This camp is visited by several tourists every year.[2] There are many instances of elephants running amok,
getting beaten by the mahouts, suffering grievous injuries and becoming handicapped at this facility.
All the elephants, barring a few, earn a sizable revenue for the temple since they are hired out and
forced to participate in temple festivals from October to April every year.

Described as a 'Palace for Elephants,' this facility is also used to train the elephants to serve Lord Krishna as well as to participate in many festivals that occur throughout the year. The oldest elephant is around 82 years of age and is called 'Ramachandran'. The rituals of Gajapooja (Worshipping Elephants) and Anayoottu (Feeding Elephants) are observed here, as an offering to Lord Ganesha. The legendary elephant Guruvayur Keshavan was housed here.
The compound also has a naalu kettu, a traditional rectangular home with a central courtyard, which belonged to the Punnathur Raja. It is poorly maintained and presently houses a training school for Papans (Mahout).
This complex also contains a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva and Bhagavathy. Some scenes in the famous Malayalam movie Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha (starring Mammooty) were filmed at this location. The visiting hours are 9.00 AM to 5.00 PM.

The Elephant Camp is located in Punnathur Kotta, at a distance of 2.6 km from the Guruvayur Temple and 28 Km from the Thrissur. We visited this place on November 2019 with my Friends.We can see roughly 30 elephants in 11.5 acres of land.
The Entry Ticket is Adult 20/- INR and Childrens below 10 Years age 10/- INR Mobile Camera 25/- INR, Still camera or Video Camera 100/- INR, Proffesional Video Camera 1500/- INR. It takes enough for 2 to 3 hours.

Punnathur kotta Elephant Sanctuary (Guruvayur) ,Thrissur, Kerala
The Guruvayur Shri Krishna Temple maintains a unique elephant sanctuary, the only one of its kind in the World. It has more than 48 elephants now. These jumbos are the offerings of the devotees to Temple. A large number of pilgrims and tourists visit this fascinating spot every day. In this vast compound, there are road facilities for pilgrims and tourists to go around.
The present elephant sanctuary is in Punnathur Kotta about 3 kms north of Guruvayur temple. Punnathur Kotta is the ancient palace of the Punnathur Rajas, now in the possession of the Devaswom. There is also an ancient temple where Lord Siva and Bhagavathy are worshipped.
It is a 10 acre compound which Devaswom purchased in 1975, which was under receiver rule of Trichur sub court. Till that time elephants were kept in this Kovilakam compound.
All the elephants were shifted to the Punnathur Kotta in a grant procession lead by Gajarajan Kesavan, all the elephants from the Kovilakam marched to Punnathur Kotta on 1975 June 25.
Many elephants of Guruvayur have become the part of history. The sweet memories of Gajarajan Kesavan - literally the king of all Elephants- still enthrall the hearts of the elephant lovers worldwide. The mammoth physique, his intelligence and devotion to the Lord were very famous.

The Dark Truth Behind Guruvayur Elephants
When I filmed Gods in Shackles there were about 52 elephants, but now there are only 45 elephants. Out of those 45 ONLY 13 are used in rituals. They're forced to walk on hot tar roads to get to the temple. And then go in circles inside the temples, walking on Granite floor. Elephants have soft, cushioned feet, designed for lusch jungles and marshes - NOT hard concrete floors!!
Meanwhile the balance 32 elephants remain shackled day an night in cruelly short chains, going completely psychotic, as you will see in this video --- they are bobbing their head up and down swaying desperately, literally going crazy.
Even as they have 32 elephants that they can't because they're sick and grossly neglected, this world-renowned temple that has received the world heritage status is shamelessly asking for more elephants and petitioning to India's Hon'ble Prime Minister to allow them to get more elephants!
The Guruvayur Punnathoor Kotta is nothing but a concentration camp for elephants where these elephants are crammed in small spaces, neglected, exploited and tortured. Despite the fact that these animals MINT MONEY for the temple, they do NOTHING to make the lives of these elephants any better!!
This is a HEINOUS CRIME AGAINST NATURE!! God's own creations tortured in God's own country! What a shame and abomination!!
