5 Day Backpack on the Brazeau Loop: Day 1
August 12th, 2019
This is day one of a 5-day trip on the Brazeau Loop trail. Well, sort of. We actually did a point to point hike from the Poboktan Pass trailhead and came out at the Nigel Pass trailhead. The hike comprised of most of the loop trail, but technically the loop starts and stops at Nigel Pass.
The first leg of the trip ends at the beautiful Waterfall Camp. We had the campsite and trail to ourselves the entire day. We also had rain each of the 5 days while on the trail. Not to the extent of being miserable, but it did make packing up in the morning a little annoying with wet tents and damp sleeping gear. The days were dry enough to enjoy campfires and fireside chats well into the evening on every night but one. That particular campground didn’t allow fires. The rain made the trails muddy, but by no means did the moister dampen our spirits or the trip.
My host for this Canadian adventure was none other than Martin Belanger, aka Martyupnorth. I was lucky enough to spend a week in in the Canadian Rockies with this local expert and fellow outdoor enthusiast. Would I have hiked these mountains by myself? Absolutely, but I would have been nervous the entire time and I’d have learned so little about his great country and wilderness. I will be forever grateful for his and his family’s kind generosity in welcoming me into their home and wilderness backyard. He’s an inspiration to many around the world.

Opening ukulele strumming riff was something I came up with a while ago. It's just a series of C and G chords.

Jasper,Canada:
Jasper is a specialized municipality in western Alberta, Canada. It is the commercial centre of Jasper National Park, located in the Canadian Rockies in the Athabasca River valley.
Jasper is 362 kilometres (225 mi) west of Edmonton. Jasper is 290 kilometres (180 mi) north of Banff, Alberta, with the Icefields Parkway connecting the Jasper townsite to Lake Louise in Banff National Park. It was established as a specialized municipality on July 20, 2001[3] and the governance of Jasper is shared between the Municipality of Jasper and the federal Parks Canada agency
Jasper National Park is the largest national park in the Canadian Rockies, spanning 10,878 km² (4200 mi²). It is located in the province of Alberta, north of Banff National Park and west of the City of Edmonton. The park includes the glaciers of the Columbia Icefield, hot springs, lakes, waterfalls and mountains. Wildlife in the park includes elk, caribou, moose, mule deer, white-tailed deer, mountain goat, bighorn sheep, grizzly bear, black bear, beaver, Rocky Mountain pika, hoary marmot, grey wolf, mountain lion, and wolverine.
This park was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984, together with the other national and provincial parks that form the Canadian Rocky Mountain Parks, for the mountain landscapes containing mountain peaks, glaciers, lakes, waterfalls, canyons, and limestone caves as well as fossils found here.
Athabasca Falls is a waterfall in Jasper National Park on the upper Athabasca River, approximately 30 kilometres south of the townsite of Jasper, Alberta, and just west of the Icefields Parkway. A powerful, picturesque waterfall, Athabasca Falls is not known so much for the height of the falls (23 metres), as it is known for its force due to the large quantity of water falling into the gorge. Even on a cold morning in the fall, when river levels tend to be at their lowest, copious amounts of water flow over the falls. The river 'falls' over a layer of hard quartzite and through the softer limestone below carving the short gorge and a number of potholes. The falls are able to be safely viewed and photographed from various viewing platforms and walking trails around the falls. Access is from the nearby parking lot, which leads off Highway 93A just northeast of the falls. Highway 93A takes off from the nearby Icefields Parkway, and crosses the falls on the way north to the town of Jasper. White water rafting often starts below the falls to travel downstream on the Athabasca River to Jasper, Alberta.
It is a class 5 waterfall, with a drop of 80 ft (24 m) and a width of 60 ft (18 m).
Peyto Lake is a glacier-fed lake located in Banff National Park in the Canadian Rockies. The lake itself is easily accessed from the Icefields Parkway. It was named for Bill Peyto, an early trail guide and trapper in the Banff area.
The lake is formed in a valley of the Waputik Range, between Caldron Peak, Peyto Peak and Mount Jimmy Simpson, at an elevation of 1,860 m (6,100 ft).
During the summer, significant amounts of glacial rock flour flow into the lake, and these suspended rock particles give the lake a bright, turquoise color. Because of its bright color, photos of the lake often appear in illustrated books, and area around the lake is a popular sightseeing spot for tourists in the park. The lake is best seen from Bow Summit, the highest point on the Icefield Parkway.
The lake is fed by the Peyto Creek, which drains water from the Caldron Lake and Peyto Glacier (part of the Wapta Icefield), and flows into the Mistaya River.
Moraine Lake is a glacially-fed lake in Banff National Park, 14 kilometres (8.7 mi) outside the Village of Lake Louise, Alberta, Canada. It is situated in the Valley of the Ten Peaks, at an elevation of approximately 6,183 feet (1,885 m). The lake has a surface area of .5 square kilometres (0.19 sq mi).
The lake, being glacially fed, does not reach its crest until mid to late June. When it is full, it reflects a distinct shade of blue. The color is due to the refraction of light off the rock flour deposited in the lake on a continual basis.
Takakkaw Falls is a waterfall located in Yoho National Park, near Field, British Columbia, in Canada. Its highest point is 384 metres (1,260 ft) from its base, making it the second-highest officially measured waterfall in western Canada, after Della Falls on Vancouver Island. However its true free-fall is only 254 metres (833 ft).Wikipedia

Bonfire At Whirlpool Campground - Jasper National Park, Canada
During a Canadian summer, one of my favourite things to do is to gather up some camping gear, buy up some smokies and a case of beer, and head out to a site somewhere in the wilds of our great country. Fortunately, there is no shortage of places to do this in Canada, the 2nd largest nation on Earth, home to endless wilderness throughout, but there is no better place, in my mind, to go but Jasper National Park!
Home to breathtaking peaks, verdant evergreen forest, and pure isolation (no settlements for 228 kilometres between Jasper and Lake Louise!), it is the perfect place to cozy up around a bonfire with your friends ... or just yourself, if you need a night or two to contemplate your life in meditative silence...
Wilmore Trek
The Willmore Wilderness Park is a 4,600 square km (1840 sq. mi.) park bordering the northern edge of Jasper National Park. Along with Jasper, Banff and numerous other National and Provincial Parks the Willmore is part of one of the largest protected mountain parks systems in the world. In comparison to Jasper and Banff, the Willmore is one of the lesser known and substantially less visited areas in this system. There are no public roads, no bridges, no amenities, yet this provides for an isolation and pure wilderness experience matched by few other places in the world. It is the home of Grizzlies, Caribou, Elk, and Wolves, a place of open sub-alpine meadows, wide valleys, and snow tipped distance mountain peeks; a place that for ever touches the heart and soul of every traveler.
Banff National Park - Alberta, Canada
Banff National Park is one of the truly beautiful wilderness areas of the world - especially in winter! Snow draped spruce and aspen cover the slopes while many of the mountain lakes, that are so colourful in summer, are covered in a thick layer of ice in winter making for a wintery wonderland.
In winter come skiing or snowboarding, take a horse drawn sleigh ride around Lake Louise or even go speeding through the forest on a dog sled - with the hounds barking and yelping in delight!
Banff National Park has spectacular scenery, fantastic activities and wonderful accommodation choices wherever you go. A visit here will be a holiday adventure unlike any you've had before. So come and enjoy!

Even The Trees Are Dancing at Takakkaw Falls

I do not own this song, it is not mine, it is called Even The Trees Are Dancing by The Waterboys.
