Waihaha Track, Pureora Forest Park (May, 2017)
Late in autumn, a few days before the beginning of winter, I, along with my sister and some friends, took an overnight tramp through Pureora Forest Park, a 78,000-hectare (190,000-acre) protected area in the North Island of New Zealand.
We stayed in the Waihaha Hut. It was a little icy the next morning after our overnight stay, but decided to take a short dip in a nearby stream. On the way in, I found lots of cool fungi. On the way out, we got a glimpse of the Mountains Ngauruhoe and Ruapehu on the way back, and I spotted some North Island Robin birds.
This temperate rain forest is recognised as one of the finest rain forests in the world. In 1946 Pureora Forest was one of the last native forests to be opened up for logging. Established in 1978, after a series of protests and tree sittings, the park is one of the largest intact tracts of native forest in the North Island and has high conservation value due to the variety of plant life and animal habitats available.

Pureora Forest Park, New Zealand - Link Road. Video 1 of 7
The Link Road goes through the forest from SH30 to SH32. It may be shorter in distance between the two main roads, but probably takes longer to travel in time - it's unsealed all the way with pot holes.
This series of 7 videos starts at the Park DoC centre and ends at the Kakaho campsite.

The Timber Trail, Central North Island, New Zealand
Located in the heart of the North Island, Pureora Forest Park is a mix of virgin, regenerating and exotic forest hosting such unexpected scenes as ancient trees crowding out a timber-miller’s tractor abandoned in the bush. Traversing this deep wilderness is an 87-kilometre trail revealing not only awe-inspiring beauty but also stories of how this special place has changed over the ages.

Hiking the Kamai-Mamaku Forest Park - New Zealand
We planned a 6 days trip from the the North to the South of the Kamai-Mamaku Forest Park. The intermediate and expected rain on our third day turned out to flood the streams seriously and forced us to turn back.
The tracks in the North Kamai-Mamaku Forest Park are generally intermediate but due to many river and streams crossings the track becomes quickly difficult during and after rain.

Timber Trail Lodge - Pureora Forest
Got to ride part of the Timber Trail New Zealand in the Pureora Forest and rode across the Maramataha Bridge which is 141m in length and 60m above the stream.
Was awesome to get off grid and stay at the Timber Trail Lodge. It is seriously such an amazing facility considering the location. I will definitely head back at some stage and do the full trail with an overnight stay here again.
