Putin unveils Pushkin statue, joins Park for dialogue closing ceremony
Russian President Vladimir Putin and South Korean President Park Geun-hye attended the closing ceremony of the 3rd South Korea-Russia Dialogue on Wednesday in Seoul.
During closing remarks, both sides emphasised the close cooperation between the two countries and the promotion of joint economic projects like the Rajin-Khasan railway.
The two sides signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) earlier in the day, agreeing in principle that South Korean companies can participate in the Russia-led rail and port development project in North Korea.
The agreement could help ease tensions between South Korea and North Korea if the North agrees to the move.
It would also be the first step towards achieving South Korean President Park's Eurasia Initiative project she suggested earlier this year.
The project hopes to connect Eurasian countries together by linking roads and railways from the southern South Korean port city of Busan to Europe through North Korea, Russia and China.
Putin also attended a statue unveiling ceremony in honour of the great Russian writer Alexander Pushkin, known as the Father of Russian Literature.
Such a symbolic event as the unveiling of the Pushkin statue is a sign of a new level of cooperation between the two nations (Russia and South Korea), said Putin.
The Russian Writers Association helped promote the project to place a statute of the writer in Seoul.
The association wanted the statue positioned near the South Korea-Russia Dialogue office inside Seoul's Korea University, but as that location is not public, the Lotte Hotel provided the space instead.

ITALY: PUTIN IN ROME FOR UNVEILING PUSHKIN STATUE
Natural Sound
In Rome on Tuesday Russian President Vladimir Putin attended the unveiling of a monument to the revered nineteenth-century, Russian poet Pushkin.
The dedication was one stop in a two day visit to Italy during which Putin has had an audience with Pope John Paul II, met for two hours with Premier Guiliano Amato and was the guest of honour at a state dinner hosted by President Carlo Azeglio Ciampi.
Russian President Vladimir Putin dedicated a monument to fellow national Pushkin in Rome's central park Villa Borghese on Tuesday morning.
Puskin was the founder of modern Russian literature - an innovator in his blending of vernacular Russian with more traditional styles in his poetry.
Attending the ceremony were Rome's Mayor Francesco Rutelli and Moscow's Mayor Yuri Luzhkov, who earlier in the year dedicated a monument to Dante in Moscow.
Putin has used the trip, his first to the west since his inauguration, to enlist support for Russia's hopes of integrating with Europe.
He pushed Russia's idea for a common missile defence during his meeting with the Italian Premier
Guiliano Amato and sought Vatican support for closer ties between Russia and Europe during the papal audience, his first.
Braced by meetings with the Pope and political leaders, Putin was headed in the afternoon for Italy's financial capital Milan to talk business where his itinerary included a meeting with Gianni Agnelli, the scion of Italy's Fiat auto dynasty.
Fiat has a joint venture to make mid-sized vehicles at a Russian plant that is to produce some 75-thousand cars starting in 2002.
In Milan Putin will also have meetings with the heads of Italy's leading gas and oil company, E-N-I.
Italy is Russia's third largest trade partner and the second biggest in Europe.
Putin wants to reassure those Italian investors that still consider direct investments in Russia unsafe that with his election the situation in Russia will be one of greater stability.

SURPRISE! Iceland President Starts Talking Russian To Putin and Other Participants At Arctic Forum
The president of Iceland got a long round of applause at the International Arctic Forum in St. Petersburg as he addressed the guests in good Russian to underline the value of friendship.
“I don’t speak good Russian. Please excuse me,” Gudni Thorlacius Johannesson said as he took the stage. But he was just being modest, as his speech impressed the native speakers with near-perfect grammar and decent pronunciation.

Russia: Putin, Abe, and Park unveil the underwater magic of Primorsky Aquarium
Russian President Vladimir Putin unveiled the Primorsky Aquarium during the Eastern Economic Forum in Russki Island, Saturday, together with South Korea President Park Geun-hye and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.
SOT, Vladimir Putin, Russian President (Russian): Here, by the Pacific Ocean, Japanese and Eastern Seas, the conditions are no worse than in Mediterranean Sea, maybe even better, in terms of biological diversity. So, step by step, we got the idea to build the seaquarium not only as a commercial object but also as a centre that can combine scientific research, education, and awareness. What we see here and what the visitors will see, is only one part of what has been done, I will say it again that the second part is education and science. Here, there are other buildings, containers with animals for further research. People who come in this representational building can get acquainted with diverse sea biology and with the newest theories of the origin of our planet.
SOT, Park Geun-hye, President of South Korea (Korean): I hope Primorsky Aquarium develops as a centre for sea biology preservation, sea culture, and tourism. [TRANSLATION] Thank you very much.
SOT, Shinzo Abe, Prime Minister of Japan (Japanese): I congratulate you with the opening of the first seaquarium. Let me express my hope that because of President Putin's help, this seaquarium will be outstanding.
