Destination Durham: Lazer Quest in Whitby
Laser Quest is a fast-action tag game set in a maze-like building with a high-energy atmosphere in Whitby. Players choose their code name, enter a briefing room and suit up, and then are released into a multi-level maze to try to zap the most opposing players while trying to avoid being zapped themselves. Photographer Ryan Pfeiffer gave the game a try.

How To Play In The OJHL | Ontario Junior Hockey League | Ontario Jr A
For full details and more interviews about how to play in the OJHL, go to
There are many different roads that lead can lead a player to the OJHL. Between the AAA system in Southern Ontario and the top-notch Junior B in the area, many players entering the scouting spotlight.
As with most Junior A leagues, players who finish up midget in AAA have a scouting advantage with the OJHL. They will be seen more and be competing against players of their same age and talent level. If a player plays AAA in the GTA or Southern Ontario, he'll be seen seen by scouts in this league.
Likewise, good young players, those under 18, who play in the GOJHL will also have an inside edge. By playing at the junior level, albeit Junior B, a players shows he can handle the size and strength of older players already. Additionally, the GOJHL is arguably the best Junior B league in Canada, and with the overflow of talent in Ontario players coming out of this league are given a fair shake.
In addition to playing in the right league while being midget-aged, players should also put themselves in scouts' sight outside of league play. This can be done by attending spring and fall camps for OJHL teams. The earlier a player can be seen by an OJHL, the more likely they can form a connection or affiliation with that club. In turn, this will give the player an inside track to making the team. Connections, connections, connections.
Average Age To Break Into The OJHL
The best young talent break into the OJHL as underagers at 17. However, most players crack rosters at 18. This is typical of most Canadian Junior A leagues.
The OJHL is a big older keeping the Canadian Junior A maximum of nine 20 year-olds. (Players sent down from the OHL at 20 count for two of these spots.)
Out-of-Province-Players
The OJHL has few players from outside Ontario. (In fact, the league has few players from outside of the GTA and Southern Ontario.) There is a simply a surplus of talent already in the area.
Players can end up here via trade though.
Americans In The OJHL
The OJHL has an interesting quirk in that they boast one American team comprised of entirely American players. The team, situated in Buffalo, works in partnership with the NHL's Buffalo Sabres and inherits their name.
This club has been an anchor for American talent in Upstate New York for decades, and it has... go to for full details of how to play in this league

ACE Grand Opening
OSHAWA, ON - With bone-chilling temperatures and blowing snow as a backdrop, the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) today officially opened the General Motors of Canada Automotive Centre of Excellence (ACE). This state-of-the-art facility offers a full range of testing facilities that allow for full climatic, durability and lifecycle testing, including one of the largest and most sophisticated climatic wind tunnels in the world.
This is a monumental day for UOIT as we open for the first time in Canada a climatic testing, validation and innovation facility of this size and magnitude, said Dr. Ronald Bordessa, UOIT president. The doors of ACE will be open to the world regardless of a company's size or affiliation, giving people from all walks of life an opportunity to work, learn and discover here. The possibilities for society are unlimited.
During the ceremony, visiting dignitaries praised this one-of-a-kind research, development and innovation facility.
Today marks a new era of research and development in Durham Region, Ontario and the rest of Canada, said theHon. Jim Flaherty, Minister of Finance and Whitby-Oshawa MP. With this new world-class facility we will be able to develop the next generation of electric vehicles, green energy technology and products not yet thought of, right here in our backyard.
The Automotive Centre of Excellence will be a magnet for entrepreneurs and the best and brightest researchers and students, said the Hon. Sandra Pupatello, Ontario Minister of Economic Development and Trade and Windsor West MPP. This will have a tremendous positive impact on Ontario's ability to innovate and attract advanced manufacturing in this highly competitive global economy.
This new state-of-the-art facility is home to the first research, development and innovation centre of its kind inCanada, said the Hon. John Milloy, Ontario Minister of Training, Colleges and Universities and Kitchener Centre MPP. Indeed, it's one of the few such facilities in the world. It is a shining example of the University of Ontario Institute of Technology's commitment to provide quality training and education. The contribution of our partners here - professors, researchers, staff and students - is enormous, and it demonstrates just how UOIT is putting students first.
We have partnered with ACE to further build on the leading research we perform in Canada, enabling us to develop cutting-edge innovations that will revolutionize the auto industry, said Kevin Williams, President and Managing Director of General Motors of Canada. Innovation and R&D are not only core advantages, they are essential, and the facilities at ACE provide access to world-class tools that ensure the next generation of engineers is equipped to compete globally.
This event highlights the transition we are seeing in Durham Region from a primarily manufacturing-based economyto a diversified knowledge-driven economy, said Roger Anderson, Regional Chair and Chief Executive Officer of theRegional Municipality of Durham. The Automotive Centre of Excellence will complement and enhance the great products and services our region has to offer the rest of the world.
The Automotive Centre of Excellence will help to create more jobs in our community and further improve the reputation of this great city, said John Henry, Mayor of Oshawa. We want to see UOIT students learn here and stay here after graduation to work and raise a family. World-class facilities like ACE will help us retain these bright young people.
ACE is owned by the university and will operate as an independent test facility, available to rent by manufacturers of all descriptions, start-up companies and researchers in Canada and around the world. It has an area of approximately 16,300 square metres divided into two distinct sections: a core research facility and an integrated research and training facility. The total cost of the facility is approximately $100 million.
ACE was developed in partnership with UOIT, General Motors of Canada Ltd. (GMCL), the Partners for the Advancement of CollaborativeEngineering Education (PACE), the Government of Ontario and the Government of Canada.

CN 550 - Prentiss Turn - 2016.04.19
A 30 mile chase of the CN 550 - Prentiss turn train from Mirror to Prentiss, Alberta, Canada with footage from 14 different locations along the way.
We begin the journey at Mirror, Alberta, Canada where this daily local originates. A pair for EMD SD40-2W's are assigned to todays train and the crew begins the day switching for a few hours in the CN Mirror yard. After tacking some northbound loads onto CN 114. The power is run back light and tied on to the 31 car train. After the crews lunch break, they depart Mirror for the short jaunt south on the CN Three Hills subdivision.
Now southbound on the Three Hills subdivision, 550 skirts along the edges of Haunted Lake, just north of the village of Alix, AB.
At Alix, 550 slows to a stop and leaves a portion of the train on the mainline while the power plus 5 empties reverse into the enormous Rahr Malt plant. The empty malt cars are set off and 6 loads are lifted from another track which will tag along for the trip to Prentiss and back to Mirror to be forwarded along the CN system.
With the train put back together from the set off and lift at Alix, 550 is southbound again on the Three Hills sub. Whistling for a grade crossing of the connector road between range road 231A and highway 601. The Malt plant is visible in the distance.
At mile 7.9 on the Three Hills subdivision is Alix Junction. Here 550 branches off onto the Brazeau sub (pronounced Bra-zoo by CN employees) for the journey west. In the rolling hills of Lacombe County, oil and gas wells dot farm land in this sparsely populated part of the province.
The diesel engines of the two vintage EMD units break the silence as 550 continues southwest along the Brazeau sub whistling for a grade crossing at township road 392.
Continuing west, 550 rolls over one of many wooden bridges along this line at range road 243. With only 3.5 meters (11.5') of clearance, truck drivers and large equipment must find a different route south.
Nearing Joffre, AB, and with the behemoth NOVA Chemicals/INEOS petrochemical plant sites in the background, 550 crosses township road 290. The sprawling NOVA Chemicals plant is served exclusively by CN and is a major source of freight traffic for the Brazeau subdivision. Countless loads of plastic pellets and tank cars are shipped every day from the site on the two daily turn trains. CN 555 from Red Deer, and the 550 from Mirror.
Having arrived at the tiny hamlet of Joffre, AB. Once again 550 stops on the main and sets off a few cars in the siding. The movements at Joffre and Prentiss are dependent on what time the 550/555 trains arrives. The two trains protect against each other and will sometimes leap frog one or the other depending on a couple of factors such as which train arrives first and the number of cars on each train. Another interesting note is the air raid style warning system in the hamlet of Joffre. Located so close to the NOVA facility, an emergency warning system was installed to alert the residents of a potential emergency at the plant.
After the set off at Joffre, 550 is westbound again and crosses highway 597 at grade.
Just east of station name sign Prentiss lies another large petrochemical facility. The DOW/MEGlobal/Praxair Prentiss site is served by both CN & CP with an elaborate network of track that allows trains to be wyed inside the plant limits. Today, 550 reverses into the Prentiss site on the west leg of the wye. After some switching, 550 exits on the east leg of the wye with the DOW loads in tow and the lead unit now pointing east on the mainline.
The train is turned but before heading back the way they came, today's switch list dictates a reverse movement west a little less than a mile to the 550's name sake - station name sign Prentiss. This is the furthest point west along the Brazeau sub train 550 will see before returning east. After a short session of switching and everyone aboard, 550 departs eastbound. As the tail end disappears around a curve at MP 22, this marks the end of our journey from Mirror, AB to Prentiss, AB. 550 will continue eastbound and switch the NOVA Chemcials plant at Joffre. After that it's a straight shot back to Mirror with car loads of another days worth of production from the industries along the CN Brazeau subdivision.
