HD - Kauai - Waimea Canyon - Pihea Trail
Beautiful visit to Waimea Canyon, and a hike on the stunning Pihea Trail, my wife and I took on a recent visit to Kauai.
The video begins with a drive up Waimea Canyon Drive from Waimea. We stopped at several spots to get some great video. We then stopped at the Waimea Canyon Lookout, for grand views of the canyon. Further up the drive we came to the Pu'u o Kila Lookout, and the entrance to the Pihea Trail.
Pihea Trail offers unbelievable views of the Kalalau Valley, especially on a clear day. The valley was a bit clouded the day we were there. However it was neat to feel the clouds sweeping over the trail. The clouds felt like cold air-conditioned wind as they swept over us. I took some video at the end of Pihea Trail, after scrambling up an short and steep incline to a great overlook. It was a little tough coming down the incline.
We also did part of the Alaka'i Swamp Trail, which intersects with the Pihea Trail. We didn't do the complete Alaka'i Swamp Trail, as it was so cloudy that day, and we thought the overlook at the end would be fogged in. Make sure you workout on the stair climber at home before attempting the Alaka'i Swamp Trail hike. Many, many wooden stairs going up and down the valleys of this trail. This hike is a workout!
We hope you enjoy the video. Let us know if there are any questions or comments.

Pihea Trail Kauai Hawaii
Pihea Trail
Pihea Trail is located at the end of the road at the top of Waimea Canyon past Kokee State Park and by the Pu'u O Kila Lookout. There is a trail sign along with a well faded sign saying - Mt. Waialeale Wettest spot on earth
The Pihea Trail is among the premier hiking paths in the Kokee/Waimea Canyon area. The trail traverses the narrow ridge in the Na Pali Kona Forest Reserve between the Kalalau Valley and the Alakai Swamp. The views extend 4,000 feet down the mossy, fluted cliffs of the Kalalau
Valley, which drops sharply into the ocean. The views inland extend over layers of folded forested canyons and ridges to Mount Waialeale, the wettest spot on earth with an average of 450 inches of annual rainfall.
Alakai Swamp is an incredible, atmospheric area like nowhere else. Swamp weather can cause no views at all and is typical weather.
The trail begins as an old road (An attempt to build a road to Haena).
The trail is quite rutted and it's easy to see why the attempt failed. There are numorous lookout areas to the Kalalau Valley. Along with the elevation changes up and down through a fern lined path, there are many wet muddy areas. Some spots have a wooden walkway in areas that are wet all the time.

Beginning at Pu‘u O Kila lookout over Kalalau Valley in Kokee State Park, the Pihea Trail crests the east rim of Kalalau Valley and ends at the highest point called Pihea with amazing panoramic views.
Then see a view of the Grand Canyon of the Pacific, Waimea Canyon. Hard to believe you're in the middle of an island in the middle of the Pacific!
The video ends with a sunset at Po'ipu Beach during a south swell.

Hawaii - Kauai Waimea Canyon and Na Pali Coast
Both the Waimea Canyon and Pu' U o Kila lookout are the must do attractions in Kauai. This is the third time we are visiting the canon, every time is like experiencing it the first time. Pu'u o Kila lookout at the end of route 550 has a magnificent view of the Na Pali coast, the fin ridges makes the valley one of the best views of the Pacific. A quick tip for the first time visitors: Go to Pu'u o Kila look out first thing in the morning, skipping all the Waimea Canyon lookout points along the way. Pu'u o Kila is usually clear in the morning, but ocean fog rolls in later on in the day. The other thing is the lookout points along the way have better light in the afternoon.
