Technologies for Aging Gracefully
Google Tech Talk (more info below)
September 28, 2011
Presented by Prof. Ron Baecker, Department of Computer Science, University of Toronto.
ABSTRACT
The percentage of senior citizens worldwide continues to grow. In response to this demographics, our research aims to envision, prototype, design, build, evaluate, and sometimes commercialize powerful and flexible electronic aids to support graceful aging. Unlike technology for seniors that is designed for remote monitoring, problem detection, and intelligent assistance, our aim is to empower older adults and their families to help themselves.
TAGlab conducts research for the journey through life. We choose projects that respond to human needs as characterized by Abraham Maslow. Maslow speaks of the following levels of needs: physiological, safety, love/belonging, esteem, and self-actualization. Our work is primarily at the top three levels.
We shall begin at top-level by reporting on projects that employ multimedia and other lifelogging technologies to help individuals with Alzheimer's disease and mild cognitive impairment be better able to remember and reminisce about experiences over a lifetime or about recent events and activities.
Other projects seek to enhance seniors' autonomy and esteem. MyVoice, recently launched as a company, is a context-aware mobile app that aids individuals with aphasia and children with learning challenges to recall words and to speak. Tangra, a response to the wave of interest in brain fitness games and exercises, facilitates the scientific evaluation over the internet of such interventions. ALLT, the accessible large-print listening and talking eBook, aids reading by individuals who have vision loss or people with motor obstacles to holding books or turning pages.
One response to Maslow's need for love or belonging is our research aimed at understanding the communication patterns and needs of people who are isolated and lonely because of situations such as chronic pain or long-term hospitalization, and the development of novel technologies such as digital communicating picture frames to aid family communication.
Some of our projects respond to multiple needs. For example, ALLT views reading as a social and collaborative activity and supports reading by and with family members. The projects to be presented in detail and others we shall briefly mention are interventions that support cognition and communication, generate feelings of efficacy, and enhance one's sense of identity and relationships with family, friends, and caregivers.
I am grateful to the talented and dedicated team at TAGlab; to our collaborators including researchers and clinicians at Baycrest, Sunnybrook Health Sciences Center, Toronto Rehabilitation Institute, Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, and OCADU; to the Alzheimer's Association, Google Research, the GRAND Network of Centres of Excellence of Canada, Microsoft Research, NSERC, and the University of Toronto Connaught Fund for grant support; and to participants in our research studies for their generous contribution of time, energy, and ideas
Designed Japanese Tea Cabinet - Chippendale School of Furniture, Scotland
Canadian student Gary Staple from Halifax, Nova Scotia won Student of the Year for his portfolio of work, which included a tea cabinet with marquetry inlays, which will go on show in Canada over the summer.
Gary, who trained as a carpenter and now also runs his own Halifax business in Canada, Gary Staple Fine Woodworking, said that the Chippendale course has been hugely useful and taught me a great deal, as well as giving me a European perspective on furniture design.
Such was Gary's commitment to doing the course, that he sold his house to come to study in Scotland with his fiancee.
His tea case in marquetry reflected the cherry trees he saw in blossom in the Scottish countryside and reflects Japanese tea chests.
Gary says: Most of the things I learnt I didn't expect to learn: Anselm's approach to business and marketing; and some of the tutors and guest tutors we had in had some amazing things to share.
I really came away with a completely different skill set compared to what I expected to learn. After being here I know that I don't want to work in a workshop alone, you give and take so much with everybody else. The creative environment is so nurturing for everybody - we all blossomed.
The highlight has been being in Scotland, a very inspiring landscape to work in. The setting of the school is unique.
The staff here are really wonderful to work with.
My plan on getting back to Canada is to set up a workshop initially and go in the direction of furniture design as well as teaching. That's my focus for the future.
Anselm Fraser, the school's principal, said that our students, many of whom have never worked with wood before, leave the school with skills they can use for the rest of their lives.
You can see the amazing furniture made by the students in the Student Gallery at and on our website chippendaleschool.com

Common Ground 519 - Farm Girls Candace Simar and Angela Foster
Two sisters reminisce in poetry and prose as they return to the family farm and share the triumphs and trials of their immigrant forbears.
Candace Simar and Angela Foster walk viewers around the farm, which the family lost due to ill health in 1970, and across to the nearby graveyard to tell a remarkable story of courage and forbearance that will strike a chord with many who are descended from immigrants. Common Ground joined the ladies on a trip to the Tordenskjold farm last summer.
Simar and Foster published the memoir Farm Girls in 2013, both authors have other published works. Simar has written a string of historical novels set in northern Minnesota, Foster received the Carol Bly Award in Creative Nonfiction from Bemidji State University in 2006 and teaches creative writing. Both women speak frequently to inspire other writers.
