Pyeongchang Trout Festival
평창송어축제
Pyeongchang in Gangwon-do Province is host city of the Winter Olympic Games. Prior to the international event, the city organized the Pyeongchang Trout Festival to make the winter truly unforgettable.
Let’s take a glimpse of the festival to enjoy the seasonal beauty.
Pyeongchang is one of the coldest and snowiest areas in Korea. Because of the cold weather, all the rivers freeze to a thickness of up to 30cm or 12 inches every winter. The trout festival takes place on a 25,000㎡(square meter) frozen part of Odaecheon Stream in the city.
This festival provides many fun winter activities, including open-ice fishing, tent fishing, and barehanded fishing, which is the most popular activity that takes place twice a day. It also has various programs for children, so the entire family can enjoy quality time.
Offering the unusual experience of ice fishing, this festival draws over 50,000 visitors from all across the country every year.
The first step to catching trout is to make a hole in the ice. Then drop a baited line below the ice hole. There are some special tips for trout fishing.
Fishing requires patience. While waiting, we have to jerk the bait to give fish the impression that it’s alive. That way, everyone can catch trout.
Fishing is all about waiting... and more waiting. The anglers are waiting for their trout in all different ways.
I’m lying down here to see trout swimming through the hole. It’s very interesting.
After gently holding the rod in the cold weather for a while...They get trout they’ve long been anticipating. Trout are a cold-water fish that live only in the cleanest water with a translucent quality. Since trout fishing is relatively easy, children can also enjoy fishing.
It's a cool experience to come out here, and enjoy something that I really don't get to do anywhere else. So I think it's pretty cool.
I'm really excited to be here, excited to catch some fish,...and participate in Korean culture.
The whole family can engage in this ultimate winter festival, making treasured memories together.
I’d like to catch as many trout as possible, but I’m happy regardless as my children are having fun here.
Cause I get to bring my daughters with me and my father, so it make this is into a family event...so I think it's a lot of fun.
The festival organizers stock the stream with trout every 20 to 30 minutes to enable the visitors to catch as many trout as possible.
We release about 4 tons of trout every day, which is about 14 to 15 thousand.
Pyeongchang is the first city in Korea to develop trout farming back in 1965, and now it's the biggest producer of the fish in the country. The trout at the festival were also raised in Pyeongchang.
Fishing is not the only way to catch trout at this festival. Visitors can also get them with bare hands through the noodling event. To participate in the event, visitors have to wear shorts and t-shirts in the sub-zero weather. Then they have to go into the icy water to catch trout barehanded. The key secret is to corner the fish and quickly grab it.
My toes are really cold.
I can eat as many trout as I want here. I came after many failed attempts at fishing.
The real highlight of the festival is eating the freshly caught trout on site, either raw or grilled.
Cheers
How does it taste?
Actually get to catch the fish and watch it go through the cycles...and once it's in your belly, it's nice and full, it's fresh, it's delicious, and here.

The Pyeongchang Trout Festival

Located about 2h15m east of Seoul is the small town of Jinbu-myeon. It's home to the wonderful winter Pyeongchang Trout Festival. Jo and I recently ventured out that way to experience the chill of this fun past time and see what else we could find.
While the wind chilled us to the bone, we managed to get out there and have a great deal of fun on ATVs, riding on the frozen lake. Other people were having just as much fun sledding and fishing. It made for a great day if you're in the area, give it a shot. It's open for one more week, closing on the 17th of February.

Pyeongchang Trout Festival brings seasonal cheer to locals and tourists
One of South Korea's biggest winter events, the Pyeongchang Trout Festival, kicked off in northeastern Gangwon-do Province over the weekend.
You can try ice fishing there, plus lots of other fun activities like sledding and skating.
Our Kim Jae-hee was there.
Pyeongchang is one of the coldest and snowiest regions in South Korea.
Every year, various winter events are held across the entire province,… but due to exceptionally warm temperatures this season, the annual Pyeongchang Trout Festival kicked off a week later than originally scheduled this year.
Nevertheless, the frozen part of the Odaecheon stream was packed with visitors on the festival's opening day on Saturday.
The Pyeongchang Trout Festival provides various programs using snow and ice. There are many hands-on activities, such as snow sledding, snow rafting, and ice skating. Some seven hundred thousand people participated in the event last winter.
The main attraction of the festival is ice fishing.
Anglers carefully unhook the trout after successfully pulling it out of the water.
Families including children of all ages can enjoy ice fishing and make happy memories together.
I came to catch trout with my family because it's the weekend. We caught the trout in just over three hours. I hope we can eat delicious food with this huge trout.
Those too eager to wait for the trout to take the bait prefer a faster method.
They are brave enough to go into the freezing water in just t-shirts and shorts.
The noodling event offers visitors the chance to catch trout with their bare hands. Despite the freezing temperatures, visitors are jumping in the icy water to catch the trout barehanded.
The trick is to corner the trout,… and quickly grab it when it is trapped in a dead end.
The person who catches the special trout marked with a golden circle on its tail is awarded with a prize made of pure gold.
Despite the chilly weather, it was very exciting. I had a great time, with many people coming to the festival. There's still lots of time left, so I hope more people come to play.
But the real highlight of the festival is eating the freshly caught trout on site.
After hours of fishing, participants can have their fresh trout served up either raw or grilled in one of the festival's kitchens.
Kim Jae-hee, Arirang News, Pyeongchang.

The icy forest glitters in a vast snowfield. People have fun riding a three-meter-tall swing made with frozen pine trees. They enjoy catching smelt with scoop nets.
[Soundbite] Lee Jung-hwa(Seoul Resident) : It's more fun to fish in places like this, because children can catch more fish here than on real ice.
Winter festivals in Korea are trying to add diversity in addition to traditional events, such as ice fishing and sledding. Some two million people from Korea and abroad visited winter festivals in Gangwon-do Province during the Lunar New Year holiday period to enjoy various programs offered there.
[Soundbite] Choi Moon-soon(Governor, Hwacheon-gun County) : We will develop new products and improve services so that tourists can make the best of their stay.
Although winter festivals are drawing to a close, their popularity is as high as ever thanks to their efforts to diversify.
