Egypt reopens pyramid of pharaoh Unas
Egypt has reopened a pyramid after 20 years of closing.
The pyramid belongs to pharaoh Unas, the ninth and final king of the Fifth Dynasty about 4,400 years ago.
Though it is small in size, the pyramid is considered as one of the most important Egyptian pyramids, as it is believed the first pyramid to record the Pyramids Texts, a collection of ancient Egyptian religious texts from the time of the Old Kingdom.
Inside Pyramid of UNAS, Saqqara, Egypt (HD)
Unas (Unis)(c. 2356 - 2323 BC) was the last king of the Fifth Dynasty. The pyramid dedicated to this king lies to the south of the Step Pyramid of Djoser at Saqqara. The Pyramid of Unas (Unis) is in poor condition however, the burial chambers are worth the visit. In this chamber, you will find the earliest Egyptian funerary texts carved into the walls and filled with a blue pigment. These are referred to as the Pyramid Texts. They are the rituals and hymns that were said during the burial. Before this time, nothing was engraved in the walls of the pyramids.
The pyramid, when it was complete stood about 62 ft (18.5 m). The core of the pyramid was loose blocks and rubble and the casing was of limestone. Today it looks like a pile of dirt and rubble, especially from the east side. Although the outside of the pyramid is in ruin, the inside is still sound. You may enter the pyramid from the north side. Trying to block the way, are three huge slabs of granite. Once inside the chamber, you will find the Pyramid Texts that were intended to help the pharaoh's soul in the afterworld. They were to help the soul find Re, the sun god.

Pyramid of Unas, The Pyramid Text & Orion
The resurrection story of Osiris told in stellar terms on the walls at the Pyramid of Unas. These together with others found in nearby pyramids of successive pharaohs are known as the Pyramid Texts. Author Robert Bauval connects these texts with the shafts of the Great Pyramid pointing to Orion and Sirius, representing Osiris and Isis. The Pyramid of Unas is located at Saqqara, near Cairo.

PART 1 A VISIT TO CAIRO EGYPT TO SEE THE PYRAMIDS OF GIZA DON PUGH
Cairo/Ciaro (Arabic: القاهرة transliteration: Al-Qahirah), which means The Vanquisher or The Triumphant, is the capital city of Egypt. While Al-Qahirah is the official name of the city, in Egyptian Arabic it is typically called simply by the name of the country, Masr (Egypt). It has a metropolitan area population of officially about 11.1 million people. Today, Greater Cairo encompasses various historic towns and modern districts into one of the most populous cities in the world. A journey through Cairo is a virtual time travel: from the Pyramids, Saladin's Citadel, the Virgin Mary's Tree, the Sphinx, and ancient Heliopolis, to Al-Azhar, the Mosque of Amr ibn al-A'as, Saqqara, the Hanging Church, and the Cairo Tower. It is the Capital of Egypt, and indeed its history is intertwined with that of the country. Today, Cairo's official name is Al-Qahira (Cairo), although the name informally used by most Egyptians is Masr (Egyptian Arabic name for Egypt). [edit] Era of the Pharaohs (BC 3500 - BC 30) The Great Sphinx of Giza is in Giza near Cairo The Great Sphinx of Giza is in Giza near Cairo Long before the pyramids were built, Egypt's northern and southern territories were ruled separately. It was about 5000 years ago that a young prince by the name of Narmer (Menes) unified the Red (North) and White (South) kingdoms and became Egypt's first Pharaoh. As brilliant a politician as he was a warrior, Narmer chose the site of Memphis as his capital. The city was situated at the then Nile Delta tip, along the North-South border, and about 25 km south of today's downtown Cairo. For the next 800 years or so, the first Capital of the ancient Egyptians prospered under the rule of Zoser, Khufu (Cheops), Khafre (Chephren), Menkaure (Mycerinus), Unas, and others. It became one of the most influential and powerful cities in the world, and housed one of the Seven Wonders of the World, the Great Pyramid of Giza. Constructed on the Giza plateau, a necropolis of the city of Memphis on the Nile's west bank, the three Great Pyramids are the ultimate manifestation of political stability and power of the ruler during the Third and Fourth Dynasties. Khufu's son built 2 of the Giza pyramids.

STORYLINE:
After being closed for 20 years, Egypt's Antiquities Minister Khaled al-Anani reopened on Thursday the pyramid of pharaoh Unas, the ninth and last ruler of the Fifth Dynasty during the Old Kingdom period.
The pyramid is the last built during the 5th dynasty (approximately 2494 to 2345 BC) and its known for the first appearance of the Pyramid Texts, one of the oldest religious texts in Egypt to have survived to this day.
In doing so, Unas initiated a tradition that would be followed in the pyramid of the kings and queens of the Sixth to Eighth Dynasties, until the end of the Old Kingdom circa 200 years later.
Two tombs were reopened for the first time since the late 1980s as well.
The tombs of Ankh-Mahor and Nefer-Seshem-Ptah both date back to the 6th dynasty (approx 2345 – 2181 BC).
After the opening, a moment of silence and candle-light vigil were held for the victims of the last week's EgyptAir flight that was lost in the Mediterranean sea.

Inside the Tombs of Saqqara: The Ancient Egyptian Burial Site Revealed
Ramadan B. Hussein, Director, Saqqara Saite Tombs Project, Institute for Ancient Near Eastern Studies (IANES), University of Tübingen, Germany
The pyramids and tombs of Saqqara served as the cemetery for the ancient Egyptian capital, Memphis. Recent excavations south of the pyramid of King Unas have revealed a significant embalming workshop containing a unique set of measuring cups and bowls. These are inscribed with the names of oils and substances used in mummification. Ramadan Hussein will talk about this discovery and its significance to understanding ancient Egyptian funerary rituals.
