This is a film about a visit to Svalbard, north of the Arctic Circle, to explore the fascinating Russian coal mining towns of Pyramiden and Barentsburg (Пирамида и Баренцбург (Шпицбе́рген)).
Pyramiden is a ghost town whilst Barentsburg is an active coal mining town.

Pyramiden a Russian Ghost Town | Travel Film from Svalbard with Drone
Pyramiden is an abandoned ghost town 78,4 degrees north. Only 800 miles from the North Pole. Take a tour with me in inside this deserted town from the Soviet - Era.One of the northernmost permanent settlements.
And maybe, just maybe, I will show you how it looks from above!
I say maybe because sometimes not everything goes as planned.
Come with me as I walk through the city and inside the cultural center where I will play on the northernmost piano.
I have one major goal here. As a man with a drone I have my mind set that I want to fly in and over this abandoned russian town. And this is a unique location! A premium destination to explore.
This town was founded by Sweden in 1910 and sold to Soviet Union in 1927.
In 1998 all 1000 inhabitants was gone leaving everything behind.
Today only six people inhabit this village, working as guides or in the hotel or the bar made availble for the tourist that travel here.
The buildings is, and will be, preserved a long time ,up to 500 years, because of the artic climate.
In the city they had a hospital, kindergarden, school, a house for single women, one for single men and one for the families. The latter called the Mad House because of all the noise.
This is the final part of my 3 part series from Svalbard or Spitsbergen as it is also refered to. And what a trip it has been. So much we experienced in this short time. Fossilhunting in Longyearbyen, Boattrip on the road to the Pyramid and finally this tour through and maybe over Pyramiden.

Pyramiden is a modern ghost town on the Island of Spitzbergen, Svalbard. It was founded by a Swedish company but purchased and kept for over 70 years as a coal mining town by the Soviet/Russian Trust Arktikugol, until the town was given up in 1998.
Svalbard is an archipelago in the Arctic Ocean north of mainland Europe, about midway between Norway and the North Pole. It consists of a group of islands ranging from 74° to 81° North, and 10° to 35° East. The archipelago is the northernmost part of Norway. Three islands are populated: Spitsbergen, Bear Island and Hopen.

Located just 800 miles from the North Pole on the island of Spitsbergen, the Soviet-era ghosttown of Pyramiden is one of the northernmost permanent settlements in the world. SOVIET-ERA PYRAMIDEN GHOST TOWN | Barentsburg and Pyramiden Svalbard: Spitsbergen day trips
A visit to Soviet-era mining towns of Barentsburg and Pyramiden Svalbard is a must! You can visit these two Arctic towns with a day trip from Longyearbyen. I love their Soviet/Russian heritage - both towns are well known in their Russian names: Пирамида и Баренцбург (Шпицбе́рген)
The island of Spitzbergen is 800 miles from the North Pole, and the Arctic Explorer can take you to Barentsburg Svalbard in the morning, and Pyramiden in the afternoon.
Today, Barentsburg is an active Russian coal mining town, and you can visit and stay in Barentsburg's only hotel. Don't miss the second northernmost brewery in the world, with its famous 78 degrees cocktail!

Svalbard Pyramiden became more and more popular with tourism, and who wouldn't like to explore an abandoned ghost town in the Arctic? Pyramiden is well preserved due to the rigid and brutal Arctic air.
Surprisingly, you can stay in the only hotel in Pyramiden if you are up for an adventure! Try to book a trip to Pyramiden and stay in its hotel in April, where the Svalbard Polar Bears are waking up from their hibernation! The whole area is swarming with a lot of Polar Bears!

Pyramiden is an abandoned Soviet coal mining town North from Longyearbyen, across the Billefjorden, located at 78o of Latitude, inside the Arctic Circle.
Pyramiden was founded in 1910 by Sweden, before Norway’s sovereignty was established over Svalbard and Jan Mayen. After some years of unsuccessful attempts to mine coal, the land was sold to the Soviet Union in 1927. The town was evacuated in 1941 during World War II, and operations resumed in 1946. The mine was completed in 1956 and at its height in the 1980’s Pyramiden had about 1,000 residents. The mine was shut down in 1998 by the now Russian state-owned Trust Arktikugol, and the town was abandoned.
More recently, in 2008, the town was reopened as a tourist attraction. Pyramiden has only one operational building, the Pyramiden Hotel, where all locals and the hotel staff live. In 2018 Pyramiden was visited by some 36,000 people. The town is a time capsule of the Soviet area, with a Lenin bust overseeing the main boulevard and a monument celebrating the first man in space, Yuri Gagarin.
The Pyramiden Hotel has a coffee and souvenir shop that sells locally brewed beer and Pyramiden vodka. It also sells great souvenirs like Russian nesting dolls and “Back to the USSR” t-shirts :-D
After Pyramiden we take a closer look at the magnificent Nordenskiöldbreen glacier, named after the Finish geologist Adolf Erik Nordenskiöld. Unfortunately, like many glaciers around the globe, Nordenskiöldbreen has been receding and the ice loss rate has increased since the 1990’s. The glacier tongue is beautiful and is one of the top attractions in Svalbard.

Der Film handelt von einem Besuch der russischen Geisterstadt Pyramiden auf Spitzbergen. Ursprünglich wurde dort Kohle abgebaut, wurde dann aber in den 90iger Jahren unwirtschaftlich und dann verlassen, Heute gibt es nur noch wenige Bewohner dort, die mit dem Rückbau beschäftigt sind und auch als Fremdenführer zur Verfügung stehen. Ein Besuch von Pyramiden sollte jeder Spitzbergenbesucher auf dem Programm haben.

Svalbard. Abandoned Soviet High Hopes
Svalbard archipelago is one of the northernmost inhabited places of our planet, which is has settlements of two countries - the Kingdom of Norway and the Russian Federation.
The Russian part of region once-prosperous is now in the doldrums since for more than 20 years most of the settlements have been left and forgotten. Today we are taking a 6-day hike and will hit the still living Russian village of Svalbard and abandoned villages of Pyramiden, Grumant, and Kolsbey.

My four nights stay in Svalbard during the month of June '19. I was able to experience the polar summer for the first time. Svalbard is actually a Norwegian archipelago between the mainland Norway and the North Pole at 78 degree N. The midnight sun is the highlight of the area during this phase. I had booked a boat cruise 46:59 during my stay to visit the abandoned town owned by Russia, Pyramiden 55:28. The Nordenskiöld glacier 54:22 proved to be a unique spot for spotting polar bears and seals. Dog Sledding 1:43:26 although more prominent during the winter ice and snow, it was worth a try on wagon wheel carts to get the gist of it. I also managed to book a separate tour in the coal mines where the guide 1:14:55 gave us a very informative session on explaining how the coal mining work was typically carried out in Longyearbyen. A quick visit to the Svalbard museum 1:12:29 helped me to gather some insight on the 400 year old history of the settlement along with types of plants and animals that existed there.

Pyramiden / ПИРАМИДА. The Pyramid.
A ghost town on Spitsbergen, Svalbard, that used to be the remote settlement surrounding the Russian coal mine of the same name. Founded by Sweden in 1910 and sold to the Soviet Union in 1927, Pyramiden was abandoned in 1998. The place is now a time capsule of USSR-ness, including the world's northernmost Lenin bust and various other relics of the Soviet era. The location and glacial backdrop are unique too. Independent travel to this remote place is theoretically possible, but adventurous and restricted. However, in the summer season you can go quite comfortably on regular, organized boat excursions from Longyearbyen, which include a guided tour on the ground that takes visitors around this most magical Arctic ghost town for a good two hours or so. An outstanding experience!

Longyearbyen (lit. The Longyear Town) is the largest settlement and the administrative centre of Svalbard, Norway. As of 2013, the town had a population of 2,075. Longyearbyen is located in the Longyear Valley and on the shore of Adventfjorden, a bay of Isfjorden located on the west coast of Spitsbergen. Since 2002, Longyearbyen Community Council has had many of the same responsibilities of a municipality, including utilities, education, cultural facilities, fire brigade, roads and ports. The town is the seat of the Governor of Svalbard. It is the world's northernmost settlement of any kind with greater than 1,000 permanent residents.
