EGYPT: CAIRO: NEW PYRAMID DATING BACK TO 1800 BC IS OPENED TO PUBLIC
Arabic/Eng/Nat
A new pyramid, dating back to 1800 B-C, has been opened to the public in Egypt.
The red pyramid at Dahshour is believed to be the prototype of the famous pyramids at Giza.
The authorities hope they will take the pressure off the pyramids at Giza which are fast deteriorating due to mass tourism.
Experts believe the area may be full of archaeological surprises
After 50 years, these pyramids, pre-dating those at Giza, have been opened to the public.
Up until now, this area just 20 kilometres (15 miles) from Giza, was used as an army training base and was out of bounds to the public.
But authorities eager to increase tourism revenue persuaded the army to open up the site.
At the opening ceremony on Saturday, the Egyptian minister of culture said the area may hold some archaeological surprises.
SOUNDBITE: (Arabic)
A complete and magnificent pyramid, and it is open for tourists starting today. We started renovating it and levelling the surrounding area. I am not an expert, but I believe that this place is still a virgin for excavations.

The Red Pyramid at Dahshour dates back to 1800 B-C and is sure to delight the thousands of tourists who visit Egypt each year.

It's just very different. It's less built up, very nice. You can just see everywhere. Despite what we imagined pyramids would be like.

It was built by King Senefru who broke away from the tradition of building step-sided pyramids.
He declared himself the living sun god Re' and built his burial chamber not under the Pyramid's earth, but high inside the pyramid.
His mummy, discovered in 19-48, has since disappeared.
It took an estimated 20-thousand workers 15 years to complete.
Senefru's fame was overshadowed by his son and successor King Cheops, whose Giza pyramid is the largest in Egypt and one of the seven wonders of the world.

Cheops is a star of the pyramids, but today I can say that we have another star - the pyramid of Senefru, the Red Pyramid and the Bend Pyramid.

Twelve (m) million tourists visited the Giza pyramids last year.
Those who went inside Cheops, Chephren and Mycerinus have contributed to its deterioration.
Water vapour causes salt to diffuse out of the stones, substantially weakening them.
It's hoped that the opening of the Dahshour pyramid will ease the tourist demand on the Giza pyramids.
But the Egyptian government is also hoping it will boost its income.

The Secret Missions Into The Great Pyramids in Egypt must watch don't forget to see
Two secret chambers have been discovered in Egypt's 4,500-year-old Great Pyramid of Giza .
Researchers confirmed they had found the mysterious cavaties after scanning the centuries old tomb using revolutionary radiography equipment.
The Scan Pyramids project made the latest discovery after being able to demonstrate the efficiency of non-evasive Muons technology at the Bent Pyramid in Dahshour this May.
Last year thermal scanning identified a major anomaly in the Great Pyramid, sparking a debate over whether there was a long-running network of tunnels hidden away inside.
But now the mystery has been answered as the Ministry of Antiquities announced on Thursday that 'two anomalies' were found in the pyramid built under King Khufu.
They are now looking to conduct further tests on the 146m-high monument to determine their function, nature and size.
The pyramid, also known as the Pyramid of Khufu, named after the son of Phara oh Snefru, is considered one of the seven wonders of the ancient world.
It has three known chambers, and like other pyramids in Egypt was intended as a pharaoh's tomb.
Operation Scan Pyramids scientists said: We are now able to confirm the existence of a 'void' hidden behind the north face, that could have the form of at least one corridor going inside the Great Pyramid.
Another 'cavity' was discovered on the pyramid's northeast flank but there is currently no link between the two cavities, according to Mehdi Tayoubi, founder of the Heritage Innovation Preservation Institute (HIP).
He told Seeker : Such void is shaped like a corridor and could go up inside the pyramid.
The international Scan Pyramids team is lead by the Faculty of Engineering at Cairo University, and the Paris-based HIP Institute.
The launched their mission in October last year to search for hidden rooms inside Khufu and its neighbour Khafre in Giza, as well as the Bent and Red pyramids in Dahshur, all south of Cairo.
The project applies a mix of infrared thermography, muon radiography imaging and 3D reconstruction - all of which the researchers say are non-invasive and non-destructive techniques.
Scan Pyramids explained in a statement that muons are similar to X-rays which can penetrate the body and allow bone imaging' and 'can go through hundreds of metres of stone before being absorbed Judiciously placed detectors - for example inside a pyramid, below a potential, unknown chamber - can then record particle tracks and discern cavities from denser regions.
In May scientists from the project released images and details of what they found at the Bent Pyramid, located at the royal necropolis of Dahshur.
They uncovered two entrances, one on the north side and one on the west side.
They open onto two corridors, which in turn lead to a pair of burial chambers, one on top of the other.
It is the the earliest to be built under the Old Kingdom Pharaoh Sneferu and thought to be the first attempt at a smooth sided structure.
It had been thought the body of Pharaoh Sneferu was entombed inside the pyramid.
However the scans scotched that theory - with no suitable chamber found inside the monument.
But Mehdi Tayoubi, president of the Heritage Innovation Preservation Institute, told Discovery: Nevertheless, this is indeed a scientific breakthrough as it validates the muography principle applied to Egyptian pyramids.
It paves the way to new investigations.

Ancient Tomb With Pyramid Entrance Found In Egypt
A tomb newly excavated at an ancient cemetery in Egypt would have boasted a pyramid 23 feet high at its entrance, archaeologists say. The tomb, found at the site of Abydos, dates back around 3,300 years. Within one of its vaulted burial chambers, a team of archaeologists found a finely crafted sandstone sarcophagus, painted red, which was created for a scribe named Horemheb. The sarcophagus has images of several Egyptian gods on it and hieroglyphic inscriptions recording spells from the Book of the Dead that helped one enter the afterlife.

EGYPT: TOMB OF ROYAL EGYPTIAN DISCOVERED AT DAHSHOUR
English/Nat
Japanese archaeologists have discovered the tomb of a royal Egyptian scribe that dates back to 1-thousand 3-hundred B-C.
The tomb, nestled in a group of five large pyramids at Dahshour, is being hailed as the most stunning archealogical find since the site was opened by Egypt's military in 1996.
Nestled amid a massive pyramid, pre-dating the more famous trio at Giza, is the tomb of Meth, a royal scribe in an ancient Egyptian dynasty.
Japanese archaeologists say the tomb at Dahshour, a site located about 40 kilometres (25 miles) south of Cairo, is the most important find made they began digging in the area two years ago.
The pyramids sit inside a former military base, which was sealed off for forty years.
Archaeologists say there are as many as two hundred more tombs scattered amongst the pyramids.
The tomb of Meth is carved from rock and leads to two courts and a chapel with side chambers.
Finding the tomb, buried 13 metres (yards) beneath the sand, was no easy job.
But its depth kept the chambers largely safe from the ravages of thieves and the elements.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
This tomb is New Kingdom. It means it (dates to) 3-thousand 2-hundred to 3-thousand 4-hundred (B-C) -- the first acropolis for the New Kingdom in the Dahshour area. And also in this area there are more than 2-hundred tombs. Especially this tomb is one of the main tombs and also we found red granite, very beautiful and complete and the written name of the person who buried here is Meth. It's almost as if we found it in the 19th dynasty -- 3-thousand 2-hundred years before the lamaside period, this is very very rare in this area.
SUPERCAPTION: Sakuji Youshimura, Head of the Japanese Expedition
The main shaft leads to the burial chamber, where the big, red granite sarcophagus was found.
The remains of a wooden coffin were found in side the sarcophagus.
But the tomb was vandalised and the mummy stolen.
Objects found in the tomb include canopic jars, relief blocks and scarabs dating back to the reign of the kings Tutankhamun and Ramses 11.
Members of the team say they are recording all of them.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
We are making drawings of all the objects which we have discovered from the burial chamber.

Further excavations in the area are expected to reveal more monuments dating back to the New Kingdom period.
That could mean the Dahshour site will soon take on an even more important position among Egypt's many historic, archaeological sites.
