CHIOS- The best kept secret of Greece//Pyrgi, Rocket Wars, beaches// Adventure 23
We stayed on one of the most beautiful islands and best kept secret of Greece. Chios is the fifth largest of the Greek Islands, but is lesser known then some of the other islands. It is located in the Aegean Sea and can be reached by ferry boat or plane. We took a plane from Athens to Chios which was about 45 minutes in length. We were acoompanied by Jim's sister, Lisa, and her family, and stayed with Nick's grandmother. We stayed in the most beautiful little village called Pyrgi. The village was so picturesque and felt like we were stepping back in time. We visited many other villages such as Mesta, Olympi, and Agio Gala where we took a tour of an old church on the side of the cliff. I highly recommend doing that. Every beach was amazing and each one was unique. Our favorite was Mavra Volia, which is known as the black rock/pebble beach. The other fascinating thing was did was to be there to watch the Greek Orthodox Easter celebration. The Rocket Wars is found only on Chios and is definitely worth seeing, just make sure you plan ahead.
We had an incredible and unforgettable time and are so grateful for the kindness and hospitality shown to us by the people of Greece and Pyrgi specifically.

Pyrgi lies 25 km from the city of Chios, is one of the villages maintained as it was built. Features that make the village unique are the narrow streets, numerous churches and the 13th century Byzantine church of the Holy Apostles. Pyrgi has become a preserved monument. The houses are tightly bound to each other to form a compact structure, built that way as protection from the frequent raids by pirates and the Turks. Residents could enter and leave the village only through a door which is currently located at Kato Porta (Lower Door).

It is the biggest village in Chios. It is known as the painted village as all the houses' external walls have different geometrical patterns, a unique feature in architectural design.

As a settlement it is one of the most well-preserved and picturesque of Greece, since its medieval appearance remains unchanged. Its characteristics are, the Tower around which the present village was built, the large central square (the so-called “meadow” by the locals), the narrow streets with their arches and of course the famous “scratches”, the black geometric motifs on white background decorating the facades of the houses.
Pyrgi is one of the most important mastic villages, as the traditional cultivation of mastic is one of the main occupations of the locals. The museum of mastic that was recently erected in the wider area of the village, confirmed the intimate close relationship of the Pyrgi locals with this very special product and attracts a host of visitors.
The nearest beaches are of exceptional beauty and are unique among them, combining different landscapes: Mavra Volya, Karida, Agia Dynami, Kato Fana, Vroulidia, Komi etc.

This is footage is of the wonderful village of Pyrgi on the island of Chios, Greece. It is known for its unique architecture. The design on the houses is made with cement and a fork. Absolutely amazing. At the end we view some mastic trees. Masticha is my favourite spice. It only grows on this island and nowhere else in the world. The island is truly blessed and I feel blessed to have first visited this island when I was about 5 years old when I broke my arm. We had to travel from Psara to Chios to take me to the hospital there.

KOMI BEACH, CHIOS ISLAND, GREECE - In the early morning hours of July 28, 2018, an inflatable boat carrying 40 people landed on Komi Beach on Chios Island, Greece. The passengers were met by the Greek police, who are responsible for screening and transporting the individuals to the Vial Refugee Camp on the island. Humanitarian relief was provided by Chios Eastern Shore Response Team (CESRT), which provided food, water, dry clothing and comfort items. Medical relief was provided by Salvamento Marítimo Humanitario (SMH).

Chios is the capital of the province and has about 25,000 inhabitants. The city is a bustling port and commercial center. In the center of town stands the Byzantine museum with a variety of historical artifacts from the island's past. Modern Chios has been built on the site of the ancient city from which there exist a few survived findings – in particular the walls and the theater. The Castle is quite impressive. Originally built by the Byzantines as a fortress, it was significantly extended by the Genovese in the 14th century.
