Pythagorion Archaeological Museum

This well curated museum includes lots of small objects that give indications of a way of life. From this museum and its sister in Vathy we learned that Samos was a significant trade zone 3,000 years ago and more well before the classical age of Athens. That history is documented by treasures that come from around the Mediterranean.

Entry into the museum includes access to the adjacent excavations of the ancient port city on Samos. This area is less well interpreted with much less signage and description. There are multiple layers to the site as one civilization built of the site of another and even used older art objects for walls. Without a guide we found it difficult to know what period we could see and even where one era ended and another began. Nevertheless, it was well worth our time.

This museum is a treasure not to be missed by anyone with even a casual interest in the archaeology and history of Greece and the eastern Aegean islands.

Luftbild Pythagorion - Samos

Das idyllische Städtchen Pythagorio ist auf den Ruinen des antiken Samos erbaut.
Seine archäologische, kulturelle und historische Bedeutung ist weltweit anerkannt. Die Pythagorion-Anlage wurde von der UNESCO zum Weltkulturerbe erklärt.
Die architektonische Anlage des Pythagorion, die gepflasterten Straßen, die Ästhetik, die malerischen Stadtviertel und traditionellen Bootswerften, aber auch die touristische Infrastruktur mit ihrem Service sind alljährlich eine Attraktion für viele tausend Besucher. Den Hafen überragt die Statue des großen Lehrmeisters, Philosophen und Mathematikers Pythagoras.
