My name is Zahi Shaked
In 2000 I became a registered liscenced tourist guide.
My dedication in life is to pass on the ancient history of the Holy Land.
Following upon many years of travel around the world, which was highlighted by a very exciting emotional and soul-searching meeting with the Dalai Lama, I realized that I had a mission. To pass on the the history of the Holy Land, its religions, and in particular, the birth and development of Christianity.
In order to fulfill this calling in the best way possible, I studied in depth, visited, and personally experienced each and every important site of the ancient Christians. I studied for and received my first bachelors degree in the ancient history of the Holy Land, and am presently completing my studies for my second degree.(Masters)
Parralel to my studies, and in order to earn a living, I was employed for many years in advertising. What I learned there was how to attract the publics attention, generate and, increase interest, and assimilate information. All this I use as tools to describe, explain and deepen the interest in the sites that we visit. From my experience, I have learned that in this way, the Holy Land becomes more than just history, and that the large stones that we see scattered about in dissaray, join together one by one until they become - a Byzantine Church. This also happens when I lead a group of Pilgrims in the Steps of Jesus. We climb to the peak of Mount Precipice, glide over the land to the Sea of Galilee, land on the water and see the miracle which enfolds before us. This is a many faceted experience. Not only history which you will remember and cherish, but an experience which I hope will be inplanted in your hearts and minds, and will accompany you all the days of your life.

I am not sure if this is an official tourist site. My friend did not even know it existed. It is large and well preserved. It is very close to Ammsn and the airport, it is well worth a visit.

Jordan, Umayyad Qasr al Azraq Desert Castle

Qasr al-Azraq is a large fortress located in present-day eastern Jordan. It is one of the desert castles, located on the outskirts of present-day Azraq, roughly 100 km (62 mi) east of Amman.
Its strategic value came from the nearby oasis, the only water source in a vast desert region. The name of the fortress and associated town came from these. The settlement was known in antiquity as Basie and the Romans were the first to make military use of the site, and later an early mosque was built in the middle.

A 360° GoPro VR video of one of the most famous desert castles in Jordan - Qasr al-Kharanah - located in the Amman Governorate, close to the road from the capital city to Azraq! =] ????????
Located in the middle of a vast, treeless plain, this imposing thick-walled structure was the most likely inspiration for the ‘desert castle’ moniker and is arguably the most photogenic of all the desert castles. There is controversy about its function and purpose, but this important Umayyad structure remains an interesting sight for visitors.
Very little is known about the origins of Qasr Kharana, although a painted inscription above one of the doors on the upper floor mentions the date AD 710, making it one of the earliest forts of the Islamic era. The presence of stones with Greek inscriptions in the main entrance also suggests it was built on the site of a Roman or Byzantine building, possibly as a private residence.

Jordan, Umayyad Qasr al Hallabat Desert Castle

The complex of Qasr al-Hallabat is located in Jordan's eastern desert. Originally a Roman fortress constructed under Emperor Caracalla to protect its inhabitants from Bedouin tribes, this site dates to the second and third century AD, although there is trace evidence of Nabatean presence at the site. It was one fort of many on the Roman highway, Via Nova Traiana, a route that connected Damascus to Aila (modern-day Aqaba) by way of Petra and Philadelphia (modern-day Amman).

With Roman, Byzantine and Umayyad history Qasr Al- Hallabat came to life with a great guide. With a mosque, cisterns, fresco and mosaic this was a great antiquity to visit. Easy walk, take your water and hat. Toilets are always an adventure in Jordan.

Qasr al Hallabat is an Umayyad desert castle that is associated with the bathhouse Hamman as-Sarah to the east. To be a history detective you have to focus on three main eras in Hallabat, you need only focus on three main eras – Roman, Byzantine and Umayyad. Originally a Roman fort, built up from the beginning of the 2nd century AD on a former Nabatean outpost. As you stand on the hill you can see how it would have been a strategic site to see anyone advancing across the plains. Al Hallabat was extended in 4th century AD as it was on the Roman highway from Damascus to Aqaba (Aila), via Philadelphia (Amman) and Petra. The fort was abandoned and then heavily damaged by the earthquake of 551 AD. The Ghassainids transformed into a monastery and a palace by using the black basaltic rock blocks to build on the Roman footprint.
During 724 and 743 the Umayyad caliph Hisham ordered Al Hallabat to be demolished and transformed the site into one of the largest Umayyad desert complexes. Constructed of black basalt and limestone the main palace had a square floor plan with towers at each corner. Decorated with frescos, stucco carvings and mosaics depicting an assortment of animals, you can see restored examples over the site. There is a mosque, an extensive water system with five cisterns and a large water reservoir, and a bathhouse on the site. To the west of the palace, there are remains of a structure that could have been for agriculture. These small castles where country estates or hunting lodge for nobles and wealthy families.
A favoured pastime for Umayyad aristocracy was hunting so these desert castles became important places of entertainment and relaxation. Qusur or Qasr means desert castle. They were constructed following a standard template of the main castle, usually, a rectangular stone structure with an elaborate entrance and other buildings in the complex would include a bathhouse (hammam), a mosque and walled enclosures for animals. The complex also included some form of water storage. The interior rooms were ornately decorated with frescoes and floor-mosaics. Most desert palaces were abandoned around 750, following the Umayyads lose of power.
The mosque on the site was constructed of layered limestone with two arched arcades (riwaqs) inside dividing the mosque into three sections. A decorative rounded molding and cusped arched windows were used in the mosque. It also has a three-tunnel vault support for the roof of the structure. A portico surrounds the mosque from the east, west, and north.
This site has a large proportion of masonry still intact. There are a few beautifully restored archways, this site is a great way to learn about the history of the region. This site was abandoned in 749 AD.

The ruins of Qasr Mushatta consist of a square enclosure, surrounded by an outer wall comprising 25 towers. Its internal space is divided into three equal longitudinal strips, of which just the central one was completed to some degree.

Iraq Al Amir - Jordan
'Iraq al Amir (Arabic:عراق الأمير - literally, Caves of The Prince), is the name shared by a town and nearby caves, within the municipality of Amman in the Jordan Valley. Located about 15 km southwest of the town of Wadi Al Seer, it has a population of about 6000 people, mostly members of the tribe of Abbadi. It is located on the hills with high and medium altitude, the area has many springs, and is famous for its olive trees, in addition to other forest trees.
