Chinese New Year flash mob surprises tourists in SW China
To welcome the Chinese New Year, China Media Group and Chengdu Television Station surprised tourists with a flash mob. Peter Chen, a composer from Taiwan, SE China, whose ancestral hometown is Chengdu, SW China, walked the streets of Chengdu with his guitar. Passersby couldn’t resist joining in with his inspiring melody, which was accompanied by a Sichuan Opera performance and a rap group.

Amazing TAIWANESE Breakfast at Taoyuan Village + Tian Zi Fang Market | Shanghai, China
In 2015, I had the pleasure of touring three of China’s most incredible cities (Shanghai, Beijing, and Xi’an) with my father. I fell in love with the country. Four years later, in April of 2019, I went back solo for a job and extended my trip so I could properly explore Shanghai, Suzhou, and Hangzhou. I can’t wait to share my adventures with you and hopefully inspire you to visit these amazing cities, too!
On the morning of my third full day in Shanghai, I headed off to Taoyun Village to have an amazing Taiwanese breakfast
Back in 1949, a lot of Chinese people emigrated to Taiwan and created military villages and made their own cuisine with ingredients from the island. I couldn’t wait to try these dishes!
I headed off to an upscale diner in the SML Center, a mall about 15 minutes from People’s Square. There were lots of dishes to choose from, so I went with a set menu for 120 Yuan/roughly $17.45 U.S. It came with soymilk, Chinese churros, rice rolls with pork floss and cucumber, tofu with seaweed and pork fat, and crab meat dumplings.
I started with the churro and dipped it into the soymilk. The churro was very flaky, oily, and airy and I loved the soymilk. You can also break up the churro and let it soak in the soymilk and eat it like cereal. It’s so good and so filling!
Then I jumped on the crab meat dumplings because they get cold fast. I tried it with a spicy chili sauce. The crab meat was delicious and the dumplings contained a bit of soup inside. The dough was fantastic and the meat was super fresh. There was also vinegar as a dipping sauce, but I preferred the chili!
The rice roll was wrapped in saran wrap. I dipped it in a glazy sauce. The roll was like a sushi hand roll. I loved the herbs, pork, cucumbers, and a lot of sticky rice. The pork was crispy and flaky. The sauce was outstanding!
Then I went with the soymilk skin with pork and seaweed. It was a little spicy and the soymilk skin had a flavor similar to tofu. It was a little different texture- and flavor-wise. It almost had the consistency of a runny egg at times. There were big chunks of pork in it. It was incredible and so different. If you love tofu, you’ll love this dish!
Then I went back to the second half of my rice and pork hand roll. I dipped it into the chili sauce from the dumplings. It was so delicious and filling!
I headed back outside to take a look at the souvenir shops. There were lots of cool things inside. There are lots of ceramic goods there, and I got a koi picture for my wife. There were lots of other unique, hand-made things there that I wanted. They were beautiful!
I continued on throughout the retail area, past other souvenir shops and clothing shops. There’s never-ending commercial space in Shanghai. I reached an open-air market called Tian Zi Fang Market and looked for some Chinese jerseys for my nephews. I also found some cool statues of dragons and copper frogs that bring good fortune.
I also visited a cat café, where you can get a drink, feed the cats, and play with them. I continued through the market. The vendors were trying to sell me everything! There were more dragons and Buddhas and statues of superheroes like Wonder Woman!
I bought a panda stuffed animal for my daughter for 85 Yuan, or about $12 U.S. If you come here, you have to know what you’re looking for beforehand, or you’ll lose your mind. There’s so much to see there! What an awesome morning in Shanghai!
I hope you loved this video of my Taiwanese breakfast and Tian Zi Fang Market visit in Shanghai! If you did, please give it a thumbs up and leave me a comment. Also, please subscribe to my channel so you don’t miss any of my upcoming travel food adventures!

Traditional SUZHOU FOOD on Guan Qian Shopping Street - Crab Tofu, Eel & Pork Ribs | Suzhou, China
In April of 2019, I took my second trip to China. I spent 12 incredible days exploring the sights, attractions, culture, history, and food in the cities of Shanghai, Suzhou, and Hangzhou. I had the time of my life and am so excited to share this China series with you!
My third full day in China continued in the city of Suzhou, also known as the Venice of the East. My friend and guide Janet took me Guan Qian shopping street, the main shopping street in Suzhou. It’s narrower and a lot tighter than Nanjing Road in Shanghai, but there are lots of lights and retail outlets. Come along with us as we explore the street and get some traditional Suzhou food afterward!
Some of the shops here are over 100 years old. You can buy cakes, snacks, and other Suzhou-style foods. I saw some durian fruit cheesecake, which I would eventually have to try!
In addition to Guan Qian shopping street, there are also side streets filled with stores, shops, restaurants, and pedestrians as well. We set off in search of the restaurant Janet recommended. We had walked ten miles easily that day, so my feet were destroyed and I had worked up an appetite. I couldn’t wait to eat something spicy to beat the cold weather!
There were no bars in the area, but there were so many lights. Finally, we reached the restaurant. I learned the Suzhou food isn’t very spicy, but it’s fish-based from the local canals. The restaurant was beautiful and authentic, with lots of large, family-style tables. Janet recommended the pork, eel, oyster salad, and crab meat with tofu. I also got a Tsingtao beer, but skipped on the turtle because it made me sad to see it on the menu.
The Tsingtao beer is the most consumed beer in the world and is a very light lager. Then the food arrived!
I started with he crab meat with tofu. It had a kind of slimy sauce with big chunks of crab meat. I loved it! It was so delicious and not spicy at all. I couldn’t get enough of it! One of the things I love about China is that it’s so large, so there are many different types of food to try! It was seriously addicting!
Then I went with the eel, which came with a glazy sauce on top along with garlic. It was phenomenal! I loved how buttery it was. It tasted like the filet of a fish and was really soft. It was from the local lake and wasn’t spicy at all. It tasted like it was cooked in its own juices!
I mixed in some rice, which absorbed the sauce. It was the best eel dish I’d ever had! The best thing about it was that there were no bones!
The next dish was a green vegetable salad with oysters and pepper on top. The vegetable was super crunchy and there was an oyster-based sauce underneath. The chunks of oyster were amazing! All of these dishes were out of this world!
Next was the pork with vinegar, which was amazing! It reminded me of Chinese ribs. The meat was so juicy and fatty and the flavors were fantastic. The best thing about it was the sauce! It was like barbecue ribs!
I couldn’t let the rest of the eel go to waste, so I added more rice to it, mixed it up with the sweet, honey-like sauce. This really was the best eel in the world!
That feast was the best Chinese food I’d ever eaten in my life! I was seriously in awe of how amazing it was. After we ate, Janet had to leave, so I continued down the street and through a gate, where I saw a temple. I looked to see if there was anything I wanted to buy.
There were lots of clothing shops, including lots of American brands. It was chilly out, but there was a lot of activity around. I found an army store with some cool jackets and camouflage shoes.
After some browsing, I finished up my night. I couldn’t stop thinking about the eel I’d had earlier!
I hope you enjoyed coming along with me for a dinner of traditional Suzhou food along Guan Qian Shopping Street! If you did, please give it a thumbs up and leave me a comment. Also, please subscribe to my channel so you don’t miss any of my upcoming travel/food adventures!

TAIWAN: TAIPEI: MAGNETIC FAMILY PHENOMENON
Mandarin/Nat
At first look, the Lin family in Taipei seems pretty normal, nothing special, three children, a modest flat.
Except the fact that both the father and his three kids share a very strange ability.
They spend their time sticking objects to their bodies or throwing coins and metal at each other - which stick to their chests.
Lin Yu-Zhong's youngest child, Guan-You, who is only three years old stands patiently while his father covers his body with cutlery.
Lin Yu-Zhong remembers the time when he discovered his strange ability.
SOUNDBITE
I discovered this when I was in the army. Once, we were bored
with my comrades, and we had just had a good dinner with wine, and
unintentionally while I was joking I stuck up a spoon on my forehead and strangely , it did not fall down. I did it again and the same thing happened again. People felt strange about this and asked how I did it. But I still don't know.
SUPERCAPTION: Lin Yu-Zhong
Mr Lin's other son, ten year old Shu-Xian and his daughter Qian-Yu, aged eight are also able to attract objects.
Despite clinical tests by doctors on their skin, blood and bone structure, there is no real explanation for their magnetic ability.
Dr Lee Si-Chen, a physicist at Taiwan National University, has long been interested in this kind of phenomenon.
SOUNDBITE:
We have used instruments to measure the magnetic field when we
do the experiments, but we found nothing. There is no magnetic field involved because he can also attract glass for example.
SUPERCAPTION: Dr Lee Si-Chen
Dr Lee also investigated whether the sticking power was caused by perspiration.
SOUNDBITE:
So we also go to Taiwan National University hospital where we
measured the blood flow, the oil content of the skin, but all measurements look normal.
SUPERCAPTION: Dr Lee Si-Chen
But Dr Lee does have a theory. He believes that Mr Lin and his children have the type of bodies which provide unusually large surface areas - allowing objects to stick to them.
SOUNDBITE:
We have to measure the contact areas so we can calculate attraction forces per square, per unit area. If the forces are indeed larger than in ordinary people then we will have to worry about another explanation .
SUPERCAPTION: Dr Lee Si-Chen
Mr Lin, who's unemployed, hopes that one day he and his sons can become professional performers and earn a living from their strange talents.
TV shows in Taiwan have already invited them to appear and he's looking forward to the day when he and his family can attract gold instead of ordinary household objects.
