Eileen and I live a three-minute walk from Shilaoren Bathing Beach which is one of the most popular beaches in Qingdao, China. Upon returning for our new school year, we visited our beach which was extremely crowded and here's a video sharing that with you.
On the most part, the Chinese in Qingdao don't sit and chairs or lay on beach towels and read by the ocean like most Westerners. Instead, they stand by the ocean waves and sit either on the sand or in tents they set up to help protect them from the sun which too much is shunned in China.
We have done a fast time-warp video of our beach during this busiest time so that you can experience it for yourself and then at the end provide the pleasant unexpected surprise of a classic jazz band warming up on the beachfront for a small concert. When the Chinese want to get married, they come to Tsingtao : there’s nothing cooler than a wedding on the beach or in the bay. Even if it resembles a production line. Tsingtao was originally popular with the Germans, who introduced the city to beer at the beginning of the last century. The beaches here have only recently become accessible to every social class. On the sands, one encounters a surprising cross-section, those in their work clothes and business suits, and others who daringly sport a swimming costume, (although bikinis are rare). Many hesitate to take the plunge, because a lot of young Chinese quite simply can’t swim ! Rubber rings are therefore indispensable, and are carried, or worn around the waist, on the buses going to the beach. Some people are abandoning them, though, as they learn to swim : in 2008 Tsingtao will host the Olympic Games’ water sports events…

Rugby on the Beach - Qingdao Highlights 2018
The 5 on 5 Rugby tournament is hosted by the Qingdao Sharks each year on Shilaoren Beach in the Laoshan District of Qingdao. Known for its golden sand and wide open beach, it is a popular destination throughout the year.
Teams from around China came to play in this one day tournament that focuses on being a fun and competitive weekend for all involved.
If you wish to get into some Rugby here in Qingdao players regularly meet up on Sundays to play touch rugby on the beach on Shiloaren Beach.
Rugby in China is growing fast in the main centers and is now played by over 550 students in Qingdao alone.
Qingdao has heaps of options for expats the nightlife here is growing into a really cool craft brewery scene, alone with a whole heap of other activities to keep you entertained.

Come along and see what is best 8 km run in Qingdao and that can easily be expanded to a half marathon. Eileen and I walk or run this at least three times a week and this time I have the pleasure of doing it with my son Everett who is visiting for the week.
In this relatively short out and back run, you will see a beautiful and interesting coast as we pass by the Shilaoren Swimming Beach, Qingdao Planning Exhibition Hall, Sculpture Park, Sculpture Art Museum and Polar Ocean World. As an extra bonus, we give you the Relive to show you the route so you can come to do it yourself!

The She-Devils are going to Qingdao!
The She-Devils’ team has been running for 8 years and are made up of players from all over the globe; UK, USA, Ecuador, Tonga, Scotland , France, Australia, New Zealand, Holland, China, Trinidad and Tobago… the list is endless and makes us a diverse and amazing group of ladies to play with.
For most of the She-Devils, the club becomes a family away from home. It is these ladies that make Beijing life so great – we train, we play, we laugh, we party, we play and then we party some more. Our main games take place locally, and with an increase in team members over the last 4 years, we have moved from playing 7s to 10s. We also love to travel to national tournaments to show off our skills
And here, the crowdfunding comes into play: travelling to these tournaments is quite expensive and the club can only support one tournament per season. We are still very keen to play the Beach Rugby Tournament in Qingdao on the 25th of August to get some precious game time before our season starts in September. Therefore, we need to cover the tournament fee (300 ¥/player), train tickets (600¥/player) and accommodation (400 ¥/player) by ourselves. With an amazing number of 14 She-Devils travelling to Qingdao, we need a total of 18,200¥, around 2,300€. Please help us and donate!
