Green algae covers beaches in Qingdao, China - no comment
Chinese tourists at the east coast resort of Qingdao were forced to share their beach with a carpet of bright green algae. The phenomenon, known as an algal bloom, occurs when the temperature of the sea, off eastern China's Shandong province, rises to between 20 to 25 degrees Celsius.

Miles of algae in Qingdao turns China sea green
A carpet of green algae has covered miles of the Chinese coastline leading to a major clean-up. The deluge, known as an algal bloom, happens when the temperature of the sea off Shandong province, rises to between 20 to 25 degrees Celsius. State broadcaster CCTV says it has occured for the last seven years and this year stretches all the way to Jiangsu province.
Environmental and sanitation officials from Qingdao have been clearing four to five million kilograms of the green algae.
Once it is dried it can be used as fertiliser.
Many tourists were undeterred and went swimming, although some were less keen.
I came to the coast planning to have a dip and swim a bit, but having seen the situation, I don't dare get in, one tourist commented. Report by Ashley Fudge.

A virtual army of people--including actual members of the Chinese military--are cleaning up the growing mess. Ten thousand citizens and 12-hundred fishing boats are pitching in.
The algae bloom covers one third of the sea off the city of Qindao. In just over a month these waters are set to play host to world's top sailors.
Olympic teams that are training here now must regularly clean the algae from their boats.

Chinese officials blame a combination of factors, including the weather. A Chinese biologist says pollution could have contributed to the explosive growth of the bloom.

So we have one most important goal, that is to guarantee 50 square kilometres of ocean for training and competition. So we are putting in tremendous efforts using four methods. As for the seaweed that has already entered, we are cleaning and removing it. So we are hopeful and confident that we will be able to guarantee that the 50 square kilometres competition space area will be clear and clean by July 15th.

You have a path that you have to follow, and this (algae), because it extends to one kilometre or sometimes 500 metres - you can't escape. I mean it's around you and you cannot make your proper course. So to be honest it's a big problem.

The uninvited guest: Chinese Submarine Appeared In The Middle Of A US Carrier Battle Group USS Kitty Hawk
Sun Tzu (544-496 BC) was a general who wrote the “Art of War” – a book on military strategy that’s still required reading for all students of Chinese literature. “If your enemy has the advantage, bait them,” he wrote. And one of the ways to do this is to “appear where you are not expected.”
In 2006, that’s exactly what the Chinese did. Right in the middle of a joint US-Japanese naval exercise.
The first time was an accident, however. In September 1994, the US Pacific Fleet reported seeing a Chinese submarine in international waters, but nothing came of it. At least till the following month.
On October 27th, the USS Kitty Hawk, an aircraft carrier, was passing through the Yellow Sea in international waters when they detected something in their sonar. To track the object, they deployed anti-submarine warfare planes which dropped sonic devices into the sea.
It turned out to be a Chinese Han-class nuclear-powered attack submarine. During the Cold War, the US and the USSR had established a protocol for such encounters to avoid conflict. Unfortunately, no such protocol existed between the US and China.
On October 28th, the Chinese scrambled jet fighters to the area, making passes over the Kitty Hawk, while Beijing threatened shoot-to-kill orders. By October 29th, the US was told that the sub wasn’t stalking their aircraft carrier. It was simply trying to get back to its base in the port of Qingdao.
The matter settled, the Kitty Hawk left the area, but it showed just how far Chinese technology had come. The Chinese thought so, too.
Which is why on July 21st, 1995 they began conducting missile tests off Taiwan, resulting in the Third Taiwan Strait Crisis. US intervention ended it the following year, but it made the Chinese leadership realize just how inadequate their technology was.
Then on April 16th, 2003 the Great Wall 61 (a Ming-class diesel submarine) suffered engine failure and used up all its oxygen, killing the entire crew. That was not the first time China had lost a submarine, but it was the first time they admitted it on national TV.
The US heaved a sigh of relief, but not because of the deaths. There had been other unconfirmed Chinese losses, but the Great Wall snafu confirmed what they knew about the state of Chinese technology.
But China was learning. According to Sun Tzu, “The factors in war are: first, measurement; second, quantity; third, calculation; fourth, comparison; and fifth, victory.” Compared to Russia, China was technologically backward, which is why they relied on greater numbers.
When the US officially terminated diplomatic ties with Taiwan in favor of China in 1979, the People’s Liberation Army Navy calculated that they could terrify Taiwan in 1995. At least until US intervention showed them otherwise. So they resorted to comparison.
The People’s Liberation Army Navy strategists came to the conclusion that the basis of America’s power lay in its aircraft carriers. Following Sun Tzu’s logic, what made one strong was also the very thing that made one weak. And while America was strong, China would never have control over its own waters. The solution? “Attack what he values most.”
Since the US only had 11 such carriers, People’s Liberation Army Navy decided to focus on submarine development and anti-carrier military exercises. The thinking was that in the event of war, America couldn’t afford to lose even one. So they bought Kilo-class submarines from Russia and began building new ones of their own.
In 2004, Chinese submarines began making reconnaissance missions further away from their coastal waters. In November, a Type 09-1 Han Class attack submarine traveled all the way to Guam, circled the island, then surfaced in Japanese territorial waters on November 10th where they were spotted.
International law requires tracked submarines to surface and identify themselves, but the submarine did not. It was followed by helicopters for two hours before returning to China.
Japan raised a ruckus over the incident, so China apologized seven days later, claiming it was due to a technical error. Chinese newspapers hailed it as a victory, however, citing Japan’s human rights abuses during WWII.
Ever since that war, ethnic Chinese have had a love-hate relationship with the Japanese. To the surprise of the PRC, some Chinese newspapers around the world lauded the incident.
It wasn’t because they supported the PRC. It was because they enjoyed seeing the Japanese panic. Even some South Korean papers had a good laugh because of their equally ambivalent relationship with Japan.
The incident taught the People’s Liberation Army Navy the value of counting coup.

Millions cheer China's largest beer festival
Cheers from China.
The froth, the fizz, the chink of glasses and the unmistakable aroma of beer.
It must be the annual Qingdao International Beer Festival - the highlight of every Chinese beer drinkers calendar.
More than 2 million people stream into Qingdao, a coastal city in east of China, for the ten day beer festival, according to its organisers.
During this time thirsty revellers will knock back an astonishing 600 tons of beer - that's a whopping 544,311 litres of beer. That's a lot of sore heads in the morning.
This year is the festival's busiest yet in its 20 year history.
Over 300 types of beer products from 27 brewers from 18 different countries are on tap.
But it's no surprise the local Tsingtao Beer is the most popular and ever present.
This 108-year-old beer brand is the symbol of the city and to most of the residents it is the best beer in the world.
Sun Rentao, sales manager at Tsingtao says: Our market share is overwhelmingly larger than the imported beers. The reason is that we are the product of our own nation and are deeply rooted in our own earth. Most of the Chinese consumers like Tsingtao beer. We have a series of products from high end to middle end with a full range of tastes to meet the demands of Chinese consumers of different levels.
Official government statistics show that last year the Chinese drank 49 billion litres of beer, making China the largest beer market in the world for tenth year.
But brewers still see plenty of potential for growth in the Chinese market with over 1.3 billion potential drinkers.
International brewers like Paulaner, Carlsberg, Kronbacher, Heineken, are sparing no efforts in exploring the market in China - so their brands were prominently displayed to the festival crowds.
Barbecues, music and a carnival atmosphere is attracting more and more Chinese to come and try different flavours from various countries. For many it's a crazy experience.
Wang Huamei came from China's Anhui Province to enjoy the fun.
He says: We've been drinking Tsingtao beer for years. Though it is not bad beer, I got a bit bored. I came here so I can taste different beers from other countries.
Zheng Fei adds: It feels great and unique. Usually we drink with a small circle of friends, but today we are here to drink with people from all over the country and even other parts of the world. This is great toast between Qingdao and the world.
As Chinese consumers become richer, they are increasingly buying imported foreign beers.
But Tsingtao isn't going to let the new arrivals have the high-end market all to themselves.
The newly developed Augerta variety is designed to compete with the German imports - which are proving particularly popular with a young and affluent clientele.
People who are courageous... And perhaps just a little bit foolhardy... Can take part in the daily drinking contests.
The winner of today's drinking contest is beer-loving Ren Guangchao, a 29-year-old bank clerk from Qingdao.
He managed to hold down 1.5 litres of beer in fewer than six seconds.
But he didn't stop there, Guangchao then sucked up 3.6 litres of beer from a glass basin with three straws.
To me beer is something like friend or lover, something I cannot miss in life. In China you can't make friends without alcohol because it is the best media for friendship, he says.
Though sharing beer with small children is not to be advised.
In this increasingly beer-loving nation, Tsingtao is being joined by foreign brands like Heineken and Krombacher, as the wealthier new generation gets a taste for swigging more exotic beers.
