The length of the railway is 1,956km, including the Tanggula Pass, which, at 5,072m above sea level, is the world's highest point on a railway. 青藏鐵路是中華人民共和國青海省省會西寧市至西藏自治區首府拉薩市的鐵路，全長1956公里，為II級單線鐵路，由青藏鐵路公司管理及營運。鐵路沿線共設有45個車站，位於西藏境內的車站均充滿了藏族特色，且無一相同。全線橋隧總長約占路線總長的8%，格爾木至拉薩段的凍土層行車時速最高為100公里，非凍土層時速最高160公里。目前旅客列車全程行車時間約為24小時。
青藏鐵路起於青海省省會西寧市，向西經湟源、海晏，沿青海湖北緣繞行，經德令哈至錫鐵山，南折與315國道並行後到達柴達木盆地中的格爾木。由格爾木南行起攀上崑崙山，穿越可可西里無人區，經過風火山、唐古拉山，進入西藏的安多、那曲、當雄，最後終到西藏自治區首府拉薩市。
本次列車為暑期旅遊旺季之加班車次，在日間時段，列車正運行在廣袤的青藏高原上，沿途景色優美，是所有進藏車次中觀光時間安排最好的選擇。
