Qingjing Mosque in Quanzhou is The Oldest in China
Quanzhou, China was once an international port city on the maritime Silk Route and Marco Polo regarded the location as...one of the two ports of the world with the biggest flow of merchandise.
Qingjing Mosque is the oldest mosque in China and rated one of the top 10 Muslim holy sites in the world. Only a few portions of the original mosque survive due to an 8.1 earthquake in 1607.
Quanzhou Qingjing Mosque China (1000 years old)
The Qingjing Mosque, also known as the Ashab Mosque, is located in the center of Tumen Street in Quanzhou. Throughout the Song Dynasty (960-1279), Quanzhou City was one of the key ports of foreign trade and attracted many Arabs. The mosque, built and repaired by Arab Muslims, reflects the friendship and cultural exchange between China and Arabic countries. Imitating a mosque in Damascus, Syria, it was initially built in 1009 and today is the oldest Arab-style mosque in China. This magnificent mosque covers an area of 2,500 square meters (0.62 acre) and features a gate, the Fengtian Hall, and the Mingshan Hall.
Facing south, the gate is made of diabase and white granite and consists of four conjoined archways. Many of the gate's domes are carved with hanging lotus, symbolizing respect for sanctity and purity. Each carved lotus is surrounded by a web of liernes, which add depth to the carvings. A platform on the roof of the gate allows worshipers to watch the moon and decide when Ramadan begins. To the east of the gate are two stone tablets recording the reconstruction of the mosque in the Yuan (1271-1368) and the Ming (1368-1644) dynasties. Another stone tablet is located just near the gate, engraved with the imperial edict of Zhu Di - the third emperor of the Ming Dynasty. He spread this edict to protect the Mosque and the Islam in China.
The spacious Fengtian Hall was once the main prayer hall of the mosque. The hall's design depicts the popular architectural style of Islamic prayer halls before the 10th century. Unfortunately, the hall's spectacular roof collapsed in an earthquake, leaving only the granite walls intact. The ornamental walls house stone inscriptions of Alcoran, lit by the large windows carved throughout.
After the earthquake damaged Fengtian Hall, Mingshan Hall became the mosque's central prayer hall. Located in the northwestern portion of the Mosque, Mingshan Hall was built in a more Chinese style and is smaller than Fengtian Hall. It is a quadrangle - resembling a traditional residential compound with a courtyard (common in northern China). Here the stone walls are adorned with Arabic inscriptions dating back to the Song and the Yuan dynasties.
The ancient history and unique blend of Arabic and Chinese architecture in this holy mosque are sure to linger in your memory long after your visit.

Quanzhou was the Shanghai of China ... 1,000 years ago.
The city in southeast Fujian was known as the largest port in Asia during the Song (960-1279) and Yuan dynasties (1271-1368).
According to legend, Marco Polo bid farewell to the nation from this town in late 13th century and described it as the Alexandria of the East.

Fortune telling at A Taoist Temple Quanzhou, China
There was a large Taoist Temple just one block east of Qingjing Mosque with quite a few shriveled women beggers in front of the temple. These ladies stick one bony and strong finger into your arm and keep on poking away while asking for money. I abhor and detest being poked! First because it frightens me when someone comes from behind and begins poking away, and second, it hurts! They never bother the men.
Travels With Sheila practically ran inside the Taoist Temple, was instructed in the proper way to pray, selected fortune sticks used inside the temple that you bring to a woman who reads the stick, and then walked outside where men were sitting on small stools waiting for customers to tell their fortunes. Altogether fun even if we didn't like our fortunes. Whatever happened to, You will have a long life and be very wealthy?

Huaisheng Mosque, Guangzhou ????????
Huaisheng Mosque, also called Shizi Mosque or Guangta Mosque, is one of the four big ancient China Islamic mosques (the other three are Xianhe Mosque in Yangzhou, Qingjing Mosque in Quanzhou and Phoenix Mosque in Hangzhou). It is also the existing China oldest mosque architecture. It is located in Yuexiu District in Guangzhou City, Guangdong.
This mosque was built in the early Tang Dynasty, was one of the earliest mosques built after the afferent Islam in China. To commemorate the founder of the Islam - Mohammed, it was named Huaisheng Mosque. And because of temple has a cylindrical tower with light body, it is also called Guangta Mosque. It was destroyed by fire in AD 1343, and was reconstructed in Ming and Qing dynasties.
This mosque sits north to south, covering an area of 2966 square meters. The whole mosque has Chinese traditional symmetrical layout. In the principal axis, there are three doors, building for watching the moon, worship house and the depositarry of Buddhist texts. The worship house sits west toward the east; the building's proportion, color, and decoration are west Asia style. The mosque pagoda here is one of the earliest and most unique sites of existing China Islamic architectures.
