2017 Quabbin Reservoir Fishing
My 2017 mash-up of Quabbin Reservoir Multi-species Fishing Highlights. Targeting everything the lake has to offer, Landlocked Atlantic Salmon, Smallmouth Bass, Lake Trout & Rainbow Trout. Applying a wide range of fishing methods, from trolling to working the foot pedal & casting. Pounding the water around gates 31 and 43. Quabbin Reservoir is the largest body of water in the state and is located in central Massachusetts. It holds many trophy smallmouth bass and is the only body of water in the state that you can boat fish for salmon & lake trout. The 2017 season was an exceptional one for me with lots of big fish. Check out the video then go make plans to hit this water gem. Tight Lines!
The Curious Case of Dana Massachusetts
This video explores the history of Dana, MA. Dana was created in 1801 by incorporating the villages of North Dana, Dana and Doubleday. The town grew to about 875 people in 1870 and was home to a thriving town common which sat at the intersection of 5 roads leading into the center of town. Dana’s last town meeting was held in March 1938 and it was officially disincorporated on April 28, 1938. All of Dana’s buildings were mapped, photographed, and catalogued before their removal and 124 graves in Brown’s Evergreen Cemetery were recorded and relocated the new Quabbin Cemetery in nearby Ware. By the end of 1938, the last Dana resident had moved away before the state dammed the Swift River and the Quabbin reservoir began to fill in 1939. Much of Dana sits on high ground above the water line but well within the protected watershed

Quabbin Reservoir - Enfield, MA
In April of 1938, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts dissolved four (4) of it's towns plus several small villages & hamlets in three other towns to form the Quabbin Reservoir in the Swift River Valley along the borders of Franklin, Hampshire & Worcester Counties. The towns that were lost were, Dana, Enfield, Greenwich & Prescott. Also lost were villages & hamlets in New Salem (Millington), Hardwick (Southworth Forks) & Pelham (East Pelham). This video is at the Enfield Outlook. It overlooks the southern tip of Prescott Peninsula where the Town of Enfield once stood. The town's center village is completely under water. Also seen in the video is an island that was the summit of Mt Zion, a small mountain that sat on the Enfield/Greenwich Town Line. Behind Mt Zion along the horizon you can see Mt Monadnock in Jaffery, NH.

Quabbin Reservior: One of the largest man-made public water supplies in the United States
Created in the 1930s by the construction of two huge earthen dams, the reservoir is fed by the three branches of the Swift River, and seasonally by the Ware River. Quabbin's water covers 39 square miles, is 18 miles long and has 181 miles of shoreline. When full, Quabbin holds 412 billion gallons of water.
The New Salem and Enfield lookouts offer magnificent views of the reservoir. In order to flood the vast area of the Swift River Valley in the 1930s, the entire population of four towns had to be relocated.
Hundreds of homes, businesses, a state highway, a railroad line, and 34 cemeteries were also moved or dismantled. Over 6,000 graves were relocated from the Valley to Quabbin Park Cemetery .
The primary purpose of DCR water and surrounding lands is drinking water supply. Public access, therefore, is carefully regulated and controlled to protect over 2 million people’s source of drinking water.
State regulations require all entry and exit through gates or other designated areas only. Anything that could pollute the water supply system, such as litter or refuse of any sort, is prohibited. Please observe restrictions on recreational activities. Direct water contact activities, such as swimming and wading, are strictly prohibited by regulation. Dogs are not allowed on any DCR property associated with Quabbin Reservoir.
Frank and Lisa Kokoski | F&L Farm | Ware, Massachusetts
Frank Kokoski and his daughter Lisa established F & L Farms in 2004, starting small with chickens, pigs and a few cows. The farm, located in Ware, Massachusetts, a small rural town located in Hampshire County at the southern end of the Quabbin Reservoir, grew quickly with additional livestock being added each year and with a small land base, so did the livestock’s impact on the farm’s natural resources.
After a few years raising livestock, Frank and Lisa realized they could use some help and contacted the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) for conservation planning and program support. Read more at ma.nrcs.usda.gov.
Visit to the Quabbin Reservoir
A beautiful July day visit to the Quabbin in Ware/Belchertown, Massachusetts. A quick hike around the park and the observation tower. A great place to visit and see where all the drinking water in the Boston area comes from. Also where parts of Super Troopers 2 was filmed.

Quabbin Reservoir, Autumn 2012
The Quabbin Reservior took the place of four towns in central Massachusetts -- Enfield, Dana, Prescott and Greenwich. Two major dams (Winsor Dam and Goodnough Dike, both well over 2000 feet long) were built to fill up the Swift River Valley, to provide water for the state's growing population. The project lasted about 12 years, from 1927 to 1938. It took another eight years for the reservoir to fill to its 412 billion gallon capacity. Over 2 million Massachusetts residents currently use about 200 million gallons daily from Quabbin -- nearly ten gallons person. Since its construction, the 25,000-acre reservoir and is surrounding watershed of 56,000 acres have become one of New England's premiere scenic and wildlife conservation areas.
Exploring the Abandoned town of Dana Massachusetts 1938 ghost town
People were made to leave the town so the could flood it and build the Reservoir but they didn't flood the entire town. We took the walk down the old main road to see what this old town looked like with no buildings or people. What a shame they moved and destroyed all these old buildings, cleared the people out but never actually flooded a majority of the town.
Formed from parts of Petersham, Greenwich, and Hardwick, it was incorporated in 1801. The town was named for Massachusetts statesman Francis Dana. The town was disincorporated on April 28, 1938, as part of the creation of the Quabbin Reservoir. Upon disincorporation, all of the town was returned to the adjacent town of Petersham. The majority of the land of the former town is still above water.
As with the nearby town of Prescott, after the disincorporation, houses were moved or razed, but cellar holes remain. In the town center (which is still somewhat maintained by the Mass DOC and Recreation), a stone marker has been installed, which reads: SITE OF DANA COMMON 1801-1938 To all those who sacrificed their homes and way of life. The common and a 68-acre area encompassing the former town center has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Quabbin Reservoir Landlocked Salmon Fishing, Massachusetts
This video shows some highlights of my spring 2011 fishing excursions on the Quabbin Reservoir targeting the elusive & hard fighting Landlocked Salmon. My third season at the Quabbin Reservoir once again did not disappoint and provided plenty of big fish between 4-6+ lbs. While not every trip yielded great success, I put my time in and when the bite was on, it was on. In my opinion the reservoir continues to put other more well known & out of state landlocked salmon waters to shame. The collage of clips shows footage of my friends Peter & Mark, who I guided onto their very first ever landlocked salmon and in the process also helping my friend Peter acquire his first ever Massachusetts sport fishing award pin. The video also shows some of my own captures and pin fish. Some of the clips even show my first real attempt while fishing alone at capturing footage of some salmon action, which included some fight scenes and salmon leaps, considering I was filming solo while at the same time trying to keep control of the boat and land fish, I was pretty pleased with the results. Fishing & filming by yourself is a little bit more difficult but does add another element of challenge to it but it can be done. As always I was impressed at how hard these dwarfed size Atlantic salmon fight and look forward to chasing some again next year. Tight Lines All!

Quabbin Memorial Day | Connecting Point | June 1, 2016
Like communities all across the United States, the towns of the Swift River Valley commemorated their war dead each year on Memorial Day until those towns ceased to exist in 1938. Quabbin Park Cemetery became the center of Memorial Day services for those towns and each year a ceremony is held to not only honor the war dead, but also the essence of the four towns and several villages that perished with the creation of the Quabbin Reservoir.

The Quabbin Reservoir
Here we explore the Quabbin Reservoir, located in the Pioneer Valley of central Massachusetts. The towns of Dana, Enfield, Greenwich, and Prescott were disincorporated and dismantled during the 1930s, then flooded by the Winsor Dam and Goodnough Dike during the 1940s. We take a ride through the park, see some of the sights, and chat with some fellow bikers along the way.
