Vietnam War Black Knights, B Troop 3/5 Cav Lam Son 719 Khe Sanh, Dong Ha, Quang Tri. DMZ
Pictures of the time I spent with Brothers In Arms with 2nd Plt. B Troop 3/5 Cav 9th Inf. Black Knights, or sometimes called The Bastard Cav because the 9th Infantry Div. left the 3rd Brigade of the 5th Cavalry when the rest of the unit went back to the World in Ft. Lewis, Washington. Delta Platoons Air Cav and the reconnaissance capabilities and fire power of the the rest of 3/5 Cav. were used to support the 5th Mechanized Infantry Div. patroling Quang Tri Province including Dong Ha, Cam Lo, Firebase Alpha 4 and other areas within sight of the de-militarized zone (DMZ).
Some photos were taken near Khe Sanh and on the Laos border while on reconnaissance & security for the bulldozer that cut the road called the Yellow Brick Road between the Rockpile and the Laosian border during Operation Lam Som 719. We called it The Yellow Brick Road to honor our Commander Lt. Col. Robert B. Osborne referred to as The Wizard of Oz. The 3/5 Cav was known in Vietnam as The Bastard Cav because it served with many Divisions in Vietnam. It was also called The Bastard Cav during the Korean War where it served under General Douglas MacArthur for the second time during time of war at his request.
Some of the soldiers in the photos are: Scott Shillingstad, Lt. Christian, Richard Battle, Jesse (Jesus) Escalero (Beck), Chico, Hugh Smith (Hoot), Warwick, Danny Steele, Richard Busby, Franklin (Freewheelin), Flannigan (Radio), Hilton, Doc Anderson, Doc Sheppard, Danny Unh Mih Ky Niem (Tiger Scout), Joe (Tiger Scout) and many other men who's names I have regetfully forgotten.
This photo show is dedicated to the memory of my friend and Track Commander SP5 Carl Nathanial Matthews (Nate) who died as a result of friendly fire on August 10, 1971, SSG Houston Arthur Price who died along with his driver CPL Cary Elzievan Mc Daniel, and a Mine Dectection Dog on December 26, 1970 as a result of a double land mine explosion just south of the DMZ in Quang Tri Province. Also dedicated to our two Tiger Scouts, Danny, Joe and all of the other lost souls of the Vietnam war.

DMZ Vietnam - The Vietnamese Demilitarized Zone was established as a dividing line between North and South Vietnam since 1954.
Ben Hai River was chosen as the parallel line. Five km to the both sides of the River, there are no military buildings, as the demilitarized zone.
But, the war happened in the land of Quang Tri and Vietnam. Now we look back to understand the terrible war and to live better.

Vietnam War bunker near Da Nang
Here is a clip I shot of a Vietnam War era bunker above the Hai Van Pass Near Da Nang. To the north the road goes down the Hai Van Pass toward Hue. To the south is Da Nang, the Da Nang Airbase and Monkey mountain, with China Beach further south but not visible. It was a beautiful summer day to visit the pass, and the bunker was in a nice peaceful spot with great views.
