Maritime museum offers glimpse of China's ancient trade routes
Established in 1959 and then relocated some 30 years later, the Quanzhou Maritime Museum is the only museum of its kind in China showcasing the history of ancient overseas communication. Located in Fujian Province, the museum's collections explore how Quanzhou played a vital role as a trading hub and a diverse cultural center with a multitude of religions.

Overseas Chinese (traditional Chinese: 海外華人/海外中國人; simplified Chinese: 海外华人/海外中国人; pinyin: Hǎiwài Huárén/Hǎiwài Zhōngguórén) are people of ethnic Chinese birth or descent who reside outside the territories of Mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan. Although a vast majority are Han Chinese, the group represents virtually all ethnic groups in China.
Huáqiáo (simplified Chinese: 华侨; traditional Chinese: 華僑) or Hoan-kheh in Hokkien (Chinese: 番客), refers to people of Chinese origin residing outside of China. At the end of the 19th century, the Chinese government realized that the overseas Chinese could be an asset, a source of foreign investment, and a bridge to overseas knowledge; thus, it began to recognize the use of the term Huaqiao. The modern term haigui (simplified Chinese: 海归; traditional Chinese: 海歸) refers to returned overseas Chinese and guīqiáo qiáojuàn (simplified Chinese: 归侨侨眷; traditional Chinese: 歸僑僑眷) to their returning relatives. Kaiyuan Temple, Quanzhou, China Kai元temple, Q u按周
On a rainy day we visited the Kaiyuan Temple 開元寺; Kaiyuan Si; Pe̍h-ōe-jī: Khai-gôan-sī), also known as the Ziyun Hall 紫雲堂; Zǐyún táng; Pe̍h-ōe-jī: Chí-hûn-tông), is a Buddhist temple on West Street, Quanzhou, China, the largest in Fujian province.
Although it is known as a Hindu-Buddhist temple, on account of added Tamil-Hindu influences, the main statue in the most important hall is that of Vairocana Buddha, the main Buddha according to Huayen-buddhism. What is now called the Mahavira Hall (Mahavira - the Great and Strong) is in fact the Vairocana Hall.
It was originally built in 685 or 686 during the Tang Dynasty. Behind its main hall Mahavira Hall”, there are some columns with fragments from a Shiva temple built in 1283 by the Tamil community in Quanzhou dedicated to Hindu God Shiva.
The carvings are dispersed across five primary sites in Quanzhou and the neighboring areas. They were made in the South Indian style, and share close similarities with 13th-century temples constructed in the Chola Nadu region in Tamil Nadu. Nearly all of the carvings were carved with greenish-gray granite, which was widely available in the nearby hills and used in the region's local architecture.
In 1983, the Kaiyuan Temple was designated as a national temple.

China-Live Seasides Show
To mark the National Day, the China Central Television is airing a special documentary series demonstrating the vastness and diversity of the world's third largest country. The broadcast is punctuated by live shows of China's various scenery and topography.
On Monday, TV viewers are entertained with refreshing views of China's seasides. The series features six themes -- mountains, rivers, oceans, color, life and Chinese dream.
Some 400 specialists armed with five helicopters, 25 drone cameras, 28 live broadcast vehicles have documented what they see with various tricks. These include slow-motion, time-elapse, underwater filming and hand-held swift-cam video making.
High-tech equipment coupled with high ideas had resulted in enlightening and entertaining TV programs, starting with the Chinese national color of red.
To most, seasides link them to sand beaches of white or yellow. But this red at Panjin is from a special plant suaeda or seepweed which grows in northeast China's Liaoning Province. It turns red twice a year during spring and then in autumn.
The so-called Red Beach is now the biggest wetland and reed marsh in the world. It hosts the most complete ecosystem the world over. It is home to over 260 species of birds and 399 species of animals including the endangered red-crown cranes and black beak gulls.
At where the Bohai Sea and Yellow Sea meet rises the Miaodao Islands. It's a vantage point to see both sunrise and sunset. Further down to the south is Penglai, where the ancient maritime Silk Road once started.
With its hill and dale, the Zhoushan Archipelago has provided natural fishing ports and hence its nickname of fish warehouse of East China Sea.
As the fifth largest island of the country, Pingtan off southeast China's Fujian Province sits only 68 kilometers from Hsinchu in Taiwan. It gets enlisted as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its marine abrasion landform constituted by granite rocks.
China's territorial waters are principally marginal seas of the western Pacific Ocean, covering about 4.7 million square kilometers. The seas and coast lines present splendid natural scenery and topography for millions of Chinese holiday-makers. On Sunday, 104 million trips were made throughout the country.
