Prime Minister of New Zealand announces $10,000 Emerging Practitioner In Clay Award 2018
Rt Hon Jacinda Ardern, Prime Minister of New Zealand and Minister for Arts, Culture and Heritage announces the winner of the inaugural Emerging Practitioner in Clay Award.
The $10,000 Award, presented by the Rick Rudd Foundation for the first time in 2018, has been established to encourage, foster and promote emerging practitioners of studio ceramics. The Prime Minister’s message announced that the first ever winner is Wellington artist Oliver Morse, with his work ‘House of Dee’.
The Award was judged by Tom Seaman, Paul Rayner and Rick Rudd, Trustees of the Rick Rudd Foundation.
The Award focusses on early career artists, and highlights the value of ceramic practice to the local, national and international community. It received 65 entries from as far afield as Whangarei and Dunedin, and 37 of them were selected for an exhibition at Quartz, Museum of Studio Ceramics, in Whanganui. This exhibition is on show from 25 September 2018 for six months.

Urbanization, Housing, and The Politics of Zoning Reform
Miami Commissioner Francis Suarez and Andrew Frey '01 discuss their experiences reforming zoning in the City of Miami at the Joseph E. Corcoran Center for Real Estate and Urban Action.
In 2015, Commissioner Suarez successfully persuaded the Miami City Commission to remove the parking requirement for lots under 10,000 square feet, with Frey drafting the ordinance and spearheading private and NGO-sector support.
As a result of the zoning reform, vacant lots in areas such as Little Havana and Overtown can now attract development more readily. The reform will lower development costs, drive investment, and ultimately help provide more affordable housing options for Miami residents.
Frey and Suarez’s urban activism is tied to a bigger movement around the country which aims to revitalize neighborhoods, encourage alternative methods of transportation (i.e. public transit/ridesharing), and increase the availability of affordable housing.
