ARAHURA, the Quiet Achiever.
ARAHURA, the Quiet Achiever. Buyer sea trails in Wellington Harbour.
Former Interislander ferry 32-year-old Arahura has been sold to European-based buyers, the Arahura left Wellington on Saturday headed for its new home, possibly a major worldwide ship breaking yard in Alang, in the district of Bhavnagar. The Arahura is expected to arrive there on October 29.
Because the cost of maintaining the ship would have been too costly to keep its Marine Class, for a vessel of that age, Arahura would be sold for scrap and parts. Keeping it commissioned would probably have been an expensive exercise. The Scrap metal from the 148 metre long, 13,600-tonne ship could fetch about NZ$2.1 million.
Arahura, which featured a modern bridge with a cutting-edge cockpit-style design, was the only ship in the Interislander fleet specifically designed with superior maneuverability, for the often treacherous stretch of water, able to handle even the roughest weather made it a vital part of the fleet. With a capacity of 1085 passengers, 100 cars and 60 railway wagons, It had clocked up almost 13 million kms– the equivalent of traveling 325 times around the world. Carried more than 10 million passengers over 32 years.
