Village of Queen Charlotte, Haida Gwaii , British Columbia, Canada, travel, holiday,
The Village of Queen Charlotte, more commonly known by its residents as Queen Charlotte City or Charlotte, is a village municipality on Haida Gwaii (formerly Queen Charlotte Islands) in the province of British Columbia, Canada. It is located on the southern end of Graham Island at Skidegate Inlet and is a member municipality of the Skeena-Queen Charlotte Regional District.
It was incorporated in 2005, having previously been represented as part of Electoral Area F of that regional district, which was coterminous with the Queen Charlotte Islands (which now comprises Electoral Areas D and E).
The town site was established when the first sawmill in the archipelago began operating in 1908. In the wake of World War I, additional work force was needed to supply allied warplanes with lumber. The town infrastructure quickly developed, offering public education, a hospital, general stores and other amenities, even a newspaper.
Mining and especially fishing were other sources of employment in Queen Charlotte when the demand for lumber again increased by the second half of the 20th century. Today, many inhabitants are still working in these resource-based jobs but recently a shift towards more tourism-oriented employment has been observed.[3]
Queen Charlotte was incorporated in 2005 and now offers several motels, shops, restaurants, crafts and car repair shops, banks, an RCMP station and a hospital. It is also the location of the Queen Charlotte Visitor Centre, which is open year-round. With its small harbour, Queen Charlotte is often the starting-point for chartered tours into Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve and Haida Heritage Site on southern Moresby Island.
Queen Charlotte is just 4 km (2.5 mi) to Skidegate with its BC Ferries landing and connections to Prince Rupert.

Canada: HaidaGwaii - Queen Charlotte Islands
Decaying Totem Poles at Skidans are visual reminders of the original natives who inhabited the villages in Haida Gwaii (Queen Charlotte Islands) off Canada's west coast. The Haida have inhabited the islands for over 10,000 years and were nearly wiped out in the 19th century by European diseases when traders arrived in the area and infected them with smallpox. Memorial poles are testimony to the culture that once thrived in these islands. Jody and I are on our way to hike the Sleeping Beauty Trail climbing Mt. Raymond & Mt. Geneveive. We stopped here at the roadside on our way up one mountain only to have to drive down it again in order to park and find a trail to take us back up another mountain. Confused yet? LOL

Island Community Pride - Skidegate Days, Haida Gwaii, Canada
What perfect weather for Skidegate Days, one of the Queen Charlottes most awaited summer events.
Families, friends and visitors from around the world who happen to find themselves in the viccinity of Skidegate around that time in July, are naturally drawn to this day of festivities and pride, whose ultimate objective is to raise funds for local projects.
Skidegate is one two major Haida communities in the Islands, which have been losing population over the years, especially among the young, who often must look off the Island to find employment opportunities.
Creating more jobs locally and harnessing the potential of the tourism industry, which is increasingly in the spolight, certainly is one of the best possible ways to encourage the people of Haida Gwaii to keep calling the Charlottes home.
When you grow up in this, a most exotic Island paradise on the edge of the continent, making the call to move away is always a heart-wrenching one.

Haida Song and Dance Performance Queen Charlotte Islands, BC
Following the feast to which our sailing trip participants were invited in Skidegate by a Haida matriarch, we were treated to a beautiful performance of songs and dances by two young Haida artists.
Picture this: a beautiful sunny day in the summer, a feast in a private home, a deck outside as a stage with the ocean as a backdrop. Life doesn't get any better in the Queen Charlotte Islands - this is Haida Gwaii.

PICTON, New Zealand (Marlborough): Queen Charlotte Sound Scenic Cruise Vlog l Ep. 14
It's a new day which means we are in Picton, New Zealand! This is an interesting port...if you don't have an excursion booked, you might be bored...you may also be bored on your excursion. LOL. I believe this port is a great port to go wine tasting. I booked my excursion through Norwegian Cruise Line though most cruise lines offer this tour. It is called: QUEEN CHARLOTTE SOUND SCENIC CRUISE and here is the description from NCL's website:
“Cruise the pristine waters of Queen Charlotte Sound on a catamaran, rounding the rugged shoreline, taking in the natural beauty and even feeding fish in a serene cove.
Depart right from the pier on a comfortable catamaran designed for optimal viewing on the typically calm waters of Queen Charlotte Sound. Like all of the sounds within the larger system of Marlborough Sounds, Queen Charlotte was formed when the surrounding river valleys filled with water during the end of the last ice age, approximately 10,000 years ago. It's separated from the other sounds by steep, serrated hills.
Scattered settlements dot the rugged shoreline, most of them so isolated that they can only be reached by boat. The landscape and lush forests haven't changed enormously since Captain James Cook sheltered here during his exploratory voyages in the 1770s. Indeed, the unspoiled natural beauty remains one of the primary draws of this magnificent sound named for Queen Charlotte, the wife of England's King George III.
You'll also spend time in Double Cove feeding the fish, which usually include herring, mullet and cod. Don't be surprised if you see king shags, a type of cormorant, swooping in, as they are highly skilled at catching fish. Still, no matter where you sail on the sound, it's the panoramic views that capture your heart and forever remain in your memory.”
As always, make sure to watch in HD for the best video quality! Hope you enjoy! :)

ONGOING QUEEN CHARLOTTE QUAKES HAVE EMPTIED HOT SPRINGS! (HAIDA GWAII).
This does not bode well, and is sad in terms of traditional as well as tourist use of these beautiful Hot Springs. Seismic activity continues unabated in the Haida Gwaii area, please be watchful. Let's hope the hot springs will be restored, and that this is not a harbinger of more serious repercussions!
