Lao Spirit Resort, Luang Prabang - Laos
The Resort offers guests seven beautifully styled Bungalows with a large terrace and an appr. size of 45 square meters. Three additional bungalows are under construction. The bungalows are built in a traditional style by local craftsmen and artists. Materials of wood and stone and an interior of antique furniture give each bungalow an unique atmosphere. Appliances like aircon, telephones and TV which may disturb the laid back atmosphere of the resort have been avoided deliberately. The antique interiors provide comfort and a sense of wellbeing. Bathrooms with tubs and magnificent views, an open air shower and a big terrace facing the river offer peace and relaxation to the guest. All bungalows are equipped with high quality rosewood floors. Rosewood from old houses has also been used for the balcony and the framework.
We offer Bungalows with two seperate beds (twin-bed) or with double-bed queen- and kingsize. For all beds you will find a luxurious mosquito net.
The whole front of the bungalows is vitrified (except for Bungalow # 1 which is only partly vitrified), which provides you with an excellent view to mother nature and the surrounding mountains - even inside of a room. Although there is no need to cool your room in the dry season from October to March, a classic ceiling fan gives you a light wave of cool air and a bit of a colonial feeling.
Soft and decent lightning in and outside ensure a cozy and relaxing atmosphere.
We include a wonderful and rich European, healthy or Laotian breakfast on the terrace of the Lao Spirit Restaurant with a breathtaking view of the opposite mountain range and the river in all overnight stays.

Gold Thread Embroidery by Prince Tiao Nithakhong Somsanith of Laos
As a child of royal lineage in 1960’s Luang Prabang, Laos, Tiao Nith Somsanith grew up surrounded by courtly arts, such as painting, lacquer, embroidery, dancing, and flower and banana leaf arrangements. He watched as his grandmother and mother patiently practiced these aristocratic arts, making traditional triangular pillows, royal sashes and sabai, jackets, collars, and dowry pieces. Somsanith seeks to preserve these traditional art forms by sharing his knowledge and techniques with others, and through the creation of his own contemporary interpretations.

The Palace of the Prince of Phrae
The Palace of the Prince of Phrae
At one time Phrae was a City State belonging to the greater Lanna Kingdom. What was known as the Glass Palace, was the living area and reception area for official visitors of the Prince. This Palace was built by Prince Piriyathepawong, the last Prince of Phrae. It is estimated that is was built between 1892--1897, after Prince Pimpisan passed away and Prince Piriyathepawong had succeeded him as ruler. But before becoming the Prince of Phrae, he married Lady Bua Tamma Ha Yot Panya, who later built Wongburi House and lived there for the rest of her life. However, because they were childless, they divorced and the Prince married Lady Bua Lai; they subsequently had many sons and daughters together.
The architecture of the Palace of the Prince of Phrae dates back to the time of Rama V. This style of building is called Colonial or Gingerbread. Originally it encompassed a very large area; there was an elephant stable, horse stable and quarters for the servants and slaves. The area that is now Nareerat School was the Prince's horse stable. The area off to the right of the Place was the royal field used for various ceremonies or traditional entertainment. There was a two meter high brick wall around it with a gate connecting to the Palace. The original palace roof had wood shingles. After they wore out, these shingles were replaced with diamond shaped tiles.
The main roof was hipped. A rectangular porch extended out from the front. The roof was Manila style, as were the gables, the eves, the moldings, the doors, windows, and the balcony railings. The entire building was decorated with intricate wood carvings. It was an extremely luxurious, magnificent Palace. There were a total of 72 custom-made windows and doors. The carpenters and craftsmen were both Chinese and locals.
Inside, the palace was decorated with rare household articles and furnishings. The front porch originally had stairs on both the north and south sides. The porch has since been removed. All that is left now are the front and back stairways. The structure itself is made from cement bricks. There were no piles driven into the ground; timbers were used to secure the base. The building is three stories high, including the cellar. The cellar is about two meters high and is divided into three rooms. It was used for food storage and as well as a prison for slaves and servants. This is what started the rumors and stories of the spirits that continue to haunt this building, a legend that continues to this day.
Their Majesties the King Queen stayed at the Palace of the Prince of Phrae during the occasion of their visit on March 15-17 in 1958. Besides that, this building also received the Best Preserved Building Award for 1993 and Best Architecture Award for 1997 from Her Royal Highness Princess Sirintorn. This building is definitely a historical site that has remained valuable in terms of the history and culture of the Phrae people for a very long time.

The building blocks of Lao textiles

Overnight in a small guest house in the middle of Laos
We couldn't make it to Luang Prabang from Xiengkhouang on a van ride before nightfall (there are no street lamps so the mountainous roads are more dangerous than they already are) so we found a random guest house in what's probably Phou Khoun (spelling?).
The two-bed room was tiny and the the bathrooms are typical for a Lao guest house.

Weaver at Taykeo Textile Gallery in Vientiane
Wow, the complexity of this textile is amazing. Just a shot video clip as the weaver weaves in discontinuous supplementary weft threads. I think this textile is based on an antique Tai Daeng shaman's head cloth.
Laos Textile Museum, Vientiane
Clearly not an expert on the subject of weaving, but I had the opportunity today to learn something about these Laos traditions. I was translating on the fly from Laos to English. If anyone in the know has corrections on the terminology or steps I missed, feel free to post in the comments.
