UK: NORTHERN IRELAND: QUEEN & PRINCE PHILLIP VISIT
English/Nat
Britain's Queen Elizabeth has been visiting Northern Ireland in another sign of increasing confidence in the peace process.
Thursday's visit comes six months after a terrorist ceasefire ended 25 years of sectarian violence.
Britain's Queen Elizabeth and her husband the Duke of Edinburgh arrived in Belfast, Northern Ireland today to mark six months of peace in the troubled province.
Security was tight as the Queen proceeded through her itinerary, commemorating the opening of a new bridge and speaking in a chapel in Armagh, the seat of both the Protestant and Catholic religions in Ireland.
In a chapel in Armagh the Queen spoke of her hopes for a peaceful future in the violence-torn region.
SOUNDBITE:
For many difficult years, the people of Northern Ireland have shown courage and compassion of an extraordinary kind. Today, as they begin to look toward a more peaceful future, Armagh, with it's two great cathedrals standing so close together , provides a powerful symbol of the strength, spirit and hopes of people across Northern Ireland.
SUPER CAPTION: Queen Elizabeth of Great Britain
Though the security precautions kept many from catching a glimpse of the Queen, onlookers seemed glad for the visit.
SOUNDBITE:
It's very nice to see the Queen here in a peaceful environment.
SUPER CAPTION: Onlooker in Belfast
Nine hundred school children and other invited guests lined Belfast's newest bridge to greet the Queen. Since the ceasefire there's been an influx of private and public investment in the province.
According to local officials, the peace process has removed one of the main barriers to investment, and employment in what used to be the U-K's job blackspot is at a thirteen year high.
Before the ceremony at the bridge, police in boats and on foot scoured the bridge, and throughout the event marksmen were in evidence in the area.
Twenty-five years of bloody conflict wracked the province before a truce was declared six months ago by terrorists.
The Queen's visit also comes at a time when Unionist politicians, who represent Northern Ireland's Protestant community have voiced opposition to talks with the government of the Irish Republic.

Lagan Weir skyline Queen Elizabeth Bridge Belfast
I've just stopped off near Belfast dockland and I'm on the Queen Elizabeth Bridge that crosses the Lagan river. Here the salt water of the sea meets fresh water of the river.
Here we see the Lagan Weir barge that regulates the flow of water up and down the river. When we get a tidal surge the sea water needs held back tp preent flooding, and so the weir barge comes into action. at least tha's my vague understanding! lol
Sorry about some high camera shots, when camera is mot aligned to eye all manner of things can unwantedly happen1ref lol

What Will Happen When Queen Elizabeth II Dies?
One day Queen Elizabeth II will, unfortunately, pass away, resulting in arguably the biggest funeral of the century. The preparations for the days, weeks and months after her passing, are given the code name Operation London Bridge. Upon her death, her eldest son, Prince Charles, will immediately become King. This could signal great change, not just for the United Kingdom but potentially the world.

Diamond Jubilee Regatta - HMS Chartwell - Westminster Bridge - Sunday, 3 June 2012 - From the Victoria Embankment near Westminster Bridge and Big Ben, in front of Whitehall and across from the London Eye, the HMS Chartwell sails past on Sunday, 3 June 2012 in celebration of the Diamond Jubilee for Queen Elizabeth II. An arrival at 7:15 am, nearly eight hours prior to the regatta secured a prime spot along the Thames. Over 1.5 million turned up, despite wind and heavy rain, to see the regatta of 1,000 boats sail past in a salute, the largest of its kind to come down the Thames in over 350 years.
New Lagan Weir Bridge Queen's Quay Belfast City centre
This new impressive walkway at Queen's Quay down beside the Lagan Weir and the Big Fish.
When the Tall ships were in last summer the original bridge could not cope with the volume of people trying to get from one side to the other. It was dangerous as prams were being crushed by the weight/volume of people trying to cross. So this bridge is very welcome.

STORYLINE:
Britain's Queen Elizabeth II officially opened the new home of the London's regional government on Tuesday calling it a striking new addition to the city's skyline.
The new City Hall on the South Bank - which is houses the offices of the Greater London Authority and London Mayor Ken Livingstone - was opened on time and on budget.
Mayors from other European countries were also present at the ceremony.
The Mayor of Paris, Bertrand Delanoe, who has recently caught the Parisian imagination by planting a beach on the city's riverbank, was invited alongside his Russian and German counterparts.
A plaque was unveiled by the Queen declaring the remarkable building open. City Hall is a striking, egg-shaped, glass structure designed by architects Norman Foster and Ken Shuttleworth.
Also on Tuesday, Livingstone's application to rejoin Britain's ruling Labour Party was turned down. He was expelled from Prime Minister Tony Blair's party two years ago for running as an independent in the city's first mayoral elections, beating the official Labour candidate.
Livingstone had hoped to stand as the official Labour candidate for mayor in the 2004 elections.
