Queenstown Singapore Info:
Queenstown is a planning area and satellite residential town situated on the south-westernmost fringe of the Central Region of Singapore. It borders Bukit Timah to the north, Tanglin to the northeast, Bukit Merah to the east and southeast, as well as Clementi to the northwest and west. Its southern and southwesternmost limits are bounded by Selat Pandan.
Developed by the Singapore Improvement Trust in the 1950s and subsequently by the Housing and Development Board in the 1960s, Queenstown was the first satellite town to be built in the country. Most apartments within the township consist of a simple one, two, or three-room flats, typically in low-rise, walk-up blocks. Major development work was carried out during the first Five-Year Building Programme between 1960 and 1965. A total of 19,372 dwelling units were constructed between 1952 and 1968
Queenstown was named after Queen Elizabeth II to mark her coronation in 1952. The area was previously known by the Mandarin Chinese name Wu-wei-gang, or in Hokkien as Boh Beh Kang. The arterial road Queensway was officially named in 1954.
Previously, Queenstown was a large swampy valley with a channel running through in a southeastern direction. On either side of this agricultural area were hills – feng xing and feng ling. The former was a rubber plantation and the latter, a cemetery also known as boh beh kang. The village in the area, with mainly Hokkien and Teochew-speaking dwellers, was also the area was inhabited by hundreds of people in attap-roofed huts, cultivating vegetables, growing fruits and rearing pigs and chickens. Buller Camp, a British military camp, was also set up there until 1953 when it was cleared for the new housing estate.
In 1947, the Housing Committee of Singapore highlighted the problem of inadequate housing in Singapore. The report proposed the decentralisation of the population away from the city with the building of self-contained residential areas in the suburbs. This proposal was believed to be an influence of the New town movements in post-war Britain.
Queenstown was subsequently chosen by Singapore Improvement Trust (SIT) as a site for housing development due to its proximity to the successful first public housing scheme in Tiong Bahru. Construction of Queenstown's first estate, Princess Margaret Estate (named after HM Elizabeth II's younger sister), began in July 1952. By late 1953, a preliminary batch of 3-room flats was ready for occupation. By 1956, work on the Princess Margaret Estate (later shortened to Princess Estate) had more than 1,000 flats comprising one, two and three-room units and 68 terrace houses. A ceremony was held in October that year for Forfar House, a 14-storey block which was a prominent landmark in those days as it was the tallest HDB flat at that point of time.
The area continued to develop as a self-contained community. Some of the facilities and amenities developed included the Town Centre and the Swimming and Sports Complex. The former was fully completed in 1969 with three cinemas and a variety of outlets including an emporium, a fresh food market, a maternity and child health centre, a bowling alley and a nightclub cum restaurant. The swimming complex was completed in August 1970.
In the 1970s, the success of the new town led to the development of Buona Vista and Holland Village, using the older neighborhoods of Queenstown as a model. However, by the 1980s, the area had become a mature estate with a higher proportion of senior citizens residing in the area than elsewhere, and gradual migration of the younger generation into other HDB new towns.

STORYLINE
Philippine President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo travelled to Washington DC on Sunday night.
The president had arrived in Los Angeles from the Philippines on Saturday and flew to Dulles airport earlier on Sunday.
From there, she was taken by helicopter to Fort McNair, a US military base in Washington DC.
On Monday, Arroyo will receive a grand reception at the White House, a meeting with President George W. Bush and a state dinner.
The welcome is intended as payback for her support of the US in its campaign against terror.
Arroyo and Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong of Singapore were the only two south-east Asian leaders to support the US-led war in Iraq and she expelled two Iraqi diplomats after Bush asked US allies to do it.
The Philippines has sent a 175-member humanitarian mission to postwar Iraq.
But the president wants to take home more than memories - Arroyo will be asking the United States for economic aid, trade concessions and money to combat terrorists.
She's seeking duty-free privileges for Philippine products, such as dried mangoes, pineapple juice and tuna.
Arroyo also wants to see Philippine businesses get reconstruction contracts in Iraq and is trying to lure US companies to invest in operations in her country.
Besides Bush, Arroyo is scheduled to meet Secretary of State Colin Powell, members of Congress and representatives from the World Bank and International Monetary Fund.
She will also give a speech at the US-ASEAN Business Council and receive an honorary degree at Fordham University in New York.

STORYLINE
The British Queen on Tuesday visited the former Yugoslav Republic of Slovenia, whose swift shift from communism to stable Western democracy has made it a role model for southeastern Europe and a reliable European Union member.
Queen Elizabeth II, accompanied by her husband Prince Philip, arrived for her first visit ever.
The visit aims to show the United Kingdom's recognition for this country and everything it has achieved in the seventeen years since gaining independence, the British ambassador to Slovenia, Tim Simmons said.
The Queen was greeted by President Danilo Turk at the Brdo Castle north of the capital, Ljubljana, and she inspected the guard of honour.
The castle was once owned by the Yugoslav royal family and later served as a retreat for late Yugoslav leader Josip Broz Tito, whom the Queen met in the 1970s.
The two exchanged honours: Turk awarded the Queen the Order of Exceptional Services of Slovenia while she presented him with the Most Honorable Order of the Bath.
Slovenia joined the EU and NATO in 2004.
In 2007, it introduced the euro and this year it headed the EU for six months and joined the bloc's borderless zone.
Yet its smooth, scandal-free existence, coupled with being one of the smallest EU nations, often leaves it out of the spotlight - and the country
welcomes the opportunity to be recognised.
The Queen will spend two days in Slovenia before travelling to Slovakia.
She will attend a state banquet on Tuesday evening, and on Wednesday she is to travel to Lipica, a stud farm for the famous Lipizzaner horses dating back to 1580.
She will also go on a walkabout in downtown Ljubljana.

Queen Elizabeth Park, British Columbia
Queen Elizabeth Park is a 130-acre municipal park located in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, on Little Mountain (British Columbia) (elevation approximately 152 metres or 500 feet above sea level). Its surface was scarred at the turn of the twentieth century when it was quarried for its rock, which served to build Vancouver's first roadways.
Before European settlement, the park was an old-growth forest and a spawning ground for salmon. Grey wolves, elk and bears would frequent the area. The settler population which began in earnest in the 1870s exterminated the grey wolves, elk and bears, chopped down all the old growth forest and paved over the salmon creeks. The salmon creeks that extend from Queen Elizabeth to False Creek do still exist today, but they have been paved over and are so polluted that salmon no longer use them. In 1930, the park's floral future was somewhat revealed when the BC Tulip Association suggested the notion of transforming the quarries into sunken gardens. By the end of that decade, the site had been turned over to the Vancouver Park Board for park and recreation purposes, and was dedicated as such by King George VI and his consort, Queen Elizabeth (the mother of Queen Elizabeth II) on their much lauded visit to Vancouver in 1939, as King and Queen of Canada. From that time, Park staff incrementally transformed the overgrown hillsides into Canada's first civic arboretum, with a generous donation from the Canadian Pulp and Paper Association. The popular quarry gardens were designed by Park Board Deputy Superintendent Bill Livingstone and were unveiled in the early 1960s.
Prentice Bloedel's gift of $1.25 million funded the open reservoirs and built the country's first geodesic conservatory, which is surrounded by covered walkways, lighted fountains and a sculpture, Henry Moore's Knife Edge Two Piece 1962–65. The Bloedel Floral Conservatory opened on December 6, 1969 amidst much jubilation. Its enclosed tropical garden houses 500 exotic plants and flowers and more than a hundred free-flying tropical birds.

Esplanade - Theatres on the Bay, Singapore
Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay (also known as The Esplanade Theatres, or simply The Esplanade) is a 60,000 square metres (6.0 ha) performing arts center located in Marina Bay near the mouth of the Singapore River. Named after the nearby Esplanade,
It consists of a concert hall which seats about 1,600 and a theatre with a capacity of about 2,000 for the performing arts. The Esplanade is a waterfront location just north of the mouth of the Singapore River in downtown Singapore.
It is the major performance arts venue, the Esplanade - Theatres on the Bay. It overlooks the Singapore river and is in between the Singapore Flyer and Merlion park, making for a good stroll around the vicinity. In the park are several memorials, including the Cenotaph (completed in 1922), the Former Indian National Army Monument.
Completed in February 2001, the centre was officially opened on 12 October 2002, by the then President of Singapore S. R. Nathan. The Esplanade was developed at a cost of about SGD 600 million. The Tamils call the Esplanade January thidal or January place because of the former sports activities held there on New Year's Day. The Chinese called the place tua kok cheng chau po or the grass field in front of the great court, referring to the Padang in front of the Supreme Court.
Queen Elizabeth Walk covers an area of approximately 9.5 acres (38,000 m2). The walk was substantially completed in 1953 and was named in honour of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth's coronation in the same year.
