Queen Emma Floating Pontoon Bridge in Willemstad, Curacao
The Queen Emma Floating Pontoon Bridge connects the Punda and Otrobanda districts of Willemstad, the capital of Curacao in the Netherlands Antilles in the southern Caribbean. Built in 1888 and named after Queen Emma (1890-1898), it is one of the oldest and longest floating bridges still in operation for non-military use. Also known as the Swinging Old Lady, the bridge swings open using two powerful ship motors, allowing ships to access the port and inner harbor. When the bridge is open to let ships from the harbor pass, pedestrians are transported free of charge by the ponchi, a small ferry. Queen Emma Bridge Willemstad Curacao
A compilation of videos showing how the Queen Emma Bridge operates across the harbour entrance to Willemstad Curacao. The first clip is of our group getting stuck on the bridge while they let a Coast Guard boat into the harbour. 2:42 is the bridge opening and 3:18 the bridge closing from the Punda side of the harbour. At 4:21 we're on the ferry at night as the bridge was swung all the way onto the Otrabanda side and we did not want to wait, but had a great place to watch.
This is a pontoon bridge built across St. Anna Bay, essentially a wooden bridge floating on a series of boat hulls. There is one large pin holding the bridge in place on the Otrobanda side. The rough translation for which means other side. The Punda side has a hull that is powered much like a boat in order to swing the bridge open potentially the entire 167 m (548 feet) span, or in some cases, only as far as needed as in the first video when the small Coast Guard boat slips through quickly.
From the Wikipedia page: The bridge was built in 1888 and was completely renovated in 1939, 1961, 1983-1986, and 2005-2006. Originally a toll bridge from 1901-1934, individuals without shoes were permitted to cross the bridge without paying the toll. When the bridge swings open, two ferries spring into action to bring pedestrians across the water. The ferries are also free of charge. Motorized traffic ceased in 1974. Locally, the bridge is known as Swinging Old Lady as it will swing to the Otrabanda side of Willemstad.

How it works - Queen Emma Bridge Curacao
The Queen Emma #PontoonBridgePunda rests atop of a set of pontoons. The final pontoon, connecting the bridge to the #Punda side, has a motor and a driver. And when a ship arrives, the entire bridge opens on a hinge, just like a door. For small ships, the bridge only needs to open a crack, but for larger vessels like oil tankers, it will swing all the way over to the Otrobanda side.

The Queen Emma Pontoon Bridge in Willemstad, Curacao - Closing and Locking
The Queen Emma Pontoon Bridge, built in 1888 is one of the great wonders of the Caribbean. This old diesel powered bridge swings out of the way for passing boats and then back to allow pedestrian traffic. Before a newer highway bridge was built, walkers shared this roadway with automobiles. Our first visit here was back in 1988. I never tire of watching this engineering marvel which has endured the test of time We recently re-visited this wonderful place on the mv Maasdam on December 15, 2013.

Produced in the early 1960s, A Bridge Called Emma is a short film about Curaçao, an island country in the southern Caribbean Sea. The film takes its name from the swinging Queen Emma Bridge, which spans the channel in the fourth largest harbor in the world.
Curaçao is approximately 65 kilometres (40 mi) north of the Venezuelan coast, that is a constituent country (Dutch: land) of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Today it has a population of over 150,000 on an area of 444 km2 (171 sq mi) and its capital is Willemstad.
Before the dissolution of the Netherlands Antilles on 10 October 2010, Curaçao was administered as the Island Territory of Curaçao, one of five island territories of the former Netherlands Antilles.
The Queen Emma Bridge is a pontoon bridge across St. Anna Bay in Curaçao. It connects the Punda and Otrobanda quarters of the capital city, Willemstad. The bridge is hinged and opens regularly to enable the passage of oceangoing vessels. On the opposite end from the hinge is a small shelter where an operator controls two diesel engines turning propellers. The propellers are mounted perpendicular to the length of the bridge and allow it to swing parallel to the shore. The process only takes a few minutes to complete.
