Considered one of Curacao's most prominent landmarks, the Queen Emma Pontoon Bridge connects the districts of Otrobanda and Punda in the capital city of Willemstad.
The floating bridge is named for Her Majesty Queen Emma of the Netherlands, who was Queen Regent from 1890 until 1898, when her daughter Wilhelmina became queen at the age of 18.
Affectionately known as the Swinging Old Lady, the bridge was originally constructed as a toll bridge by American Business Entrepreneur -- and Consul of the United States -- Leonard Burlington Smith.

Queen Emma Bridge: The Swinging Old Lady of Curacao
Glimpses of Curacao's Queen Emma Bridge, a Pontoon Bridge which is affectionately called The Swinging Old Lady of Curacao and the City of Willemstad, Capital of Curacao. This bridge connects Punda and Otrobanda districts of Curacao on either side of St. Anna Bay. It was built in 1888 by Leonard Burlington Smith and named after Queen Emma
(1890-1898). The defining elements of this Bridge are its 16 floating Pontoon Boats. The Swinging Old Lady swings open using two powerful ship motors, allowing ships to access the port. It can be seen in this video that this bridge has opened up and is lying parallel to the harbour to allow ships to pass through. While this bridge is lying parallel to the harbour, one can see two Ferries transporting people to either side of the bridge. Later on it can be seen that the bridge is slowly swinging back to connect the two sides of the Bay and the waiting people on the Otrobanda side are rushing to cross over to the Punda side of the bridge. 26 March, 2012.

Willemstad, Curaçao - Queen Emma Bridge at Night HD (2016)
The Queen Emma Bridge is a pontoon bridge across St. Anna Bay in Curaçao. It connects the Punda and Otrobanda quarters of the capital city, Willemstad. The bridge is hinged and opens regularly to enable the passage of oceangoing vessels. On the opposite end from the hinge is a small shelter where an operator controls two diesel engines turning propellers. The propellers are mounted perpendicular to the length of the bridge and allow it to swing parallel to the shore. The process only takes a few minutes to complete.
The bridge was built in 1888 and was completely renovated in 1939. Originally it was a toll bridge. Individuals without shoes were permitted to cross the bridge without paying the toll; however, today, a toll is no longer applied. When the bridge swings open, two ferries spring into action to bring pedestrians across the water. The ferries are also free of charge.
Locally, the bridge is known as Our Swinging Old Lady as it will swing to the Otrabanda side of Willemstad.
